Chapter 50: Severing Ties

Guoguo hurried over with the paper and ink, handing them to Xu Ran. "Here, Daddy."

Xu Ran accepted them, giving Guoguo a pat on the head, then asked Liu Tong to bring him a chair. He placed the paper on the chair and quickly began writing.

By the time Xu Ran finished drafting the document, Tangtang had already returned with the village chief in tow.

The village chief frowned upon seeing the scene at Xu Ran's house. Xu Houcai, even at his age, was still causing such trouble. It seemed he was growing more foolish with the years, and his ger wasn't much better, being equally shameless.

"What is all this commotion? Xu Houcai, let me tell you—when the family split, it was made clear that whatever happened to Xu Ran would no longer concern you. And now you're here causing trouble again? Is this how a father should act? Do you think it's right to set such a terrible example for the children?"

Xu Houcai was at a loss for words. The village chief was right—those very words had indeed been spoken, but he hadn't taken them seriously back then, never imagining Xu Ran would hold him to it.

"Village Chief, it's not as simple as that," Xu Ah-mo interjected, still trying to salvage the situation. "We are Xu Ran's parents, after all. Is it not right for him to show filial piety toward us?"

The village chief didn't bother arguing with him. Instead, he turned to Xu Ran. "Xu Ran, why did you call me here?"

Xu Ran offered the stool to him. "Village Chief, please sit."

Once the village chief was seated, Xu Ran explained, "When the family split, it was agreed that my father and Ah-mo would have no further claim over me. But words alone are not enough. I believe it's best to have a written agreement to make things clear. Here, this is the document I've prepared."

The village chief took the paper Xu Ran handed him. After reading it, he found everything in order. "Very well, then. Let's sign this document. Everyone here can bear witness."

"Agreed," several people in the crowd nodded.

Under the watchful eyes of the villagers, the Xu family had no room to object. The village chief read the document aloud for everyone to hear. In it, Xu Ran declared that from this day forward, regardless of life or death, he and his family would have no connection to Xu Houcai and his household. The two families were to avoid contact as much as possible. However, Xu Ran would still see to his parents' funeral rites when the time came, but all other responsibilities would fall on Xu Cheng's shoulders.

Xu Ran's proposal was entirely reasonable.

Xu Ah-mo, still wanting to say something, was held back by Xu Cheng. He feared that if the matter of Xu Ran's past being a fool came up, they could all end up in prison.

Three copies of the document were made. As there was no seal available, Xu Ran simply bit his finger, pressing it to the paper, leaving a red, bloody print. With a smile, he handed the document to the village chief, who in turn passed it to Xu Houcai.

Staring at the bright red fingerprint, Xu Houcai hesitated, feeling unsettled. But with so many eyes on him, he had no choice. Following Xu Ran's lead, he pricked his finger and pressed it to the paper. After both had signed, the village chief took one copy for himself, while Xu Ran and Xu Houcai each kept a copy. With that, the severance of their ties was complete.

As the crowd dispersed, some entertained by the scene, the Xu family left in frustration. Only Zhang Yue remained, casting a glance at Xu Ran with a peculiar expression before departing.

After everyone had gone, Xu Ran invited the village chief inside. Liu Tong poured some water and served sunflower seeds, while Xu Ran brought out one of the ears of corn he had purchased earlier in town.

The village chief, having never seen such a thing, examined it with curiosity. "Ah Ran, what is this?"

"Village Chief, this is something from the southern regions. When I was buying seeds in town today, I saw it. The seller called it a 'stick' or 'corn.' It's a highly productive crop. Not only can people eat it, but it's also good feed for livestock. The seller didn't have many seeds, but I bought some to try. Since my land is barren anyway, there's not much to lose. Would you like to plant some as well?"

The village chief was intrigued, but hesitant. Though Xu Ran's words were promising, no one had ever planted this crop before, so its potential was still uncertain.

Sensing the village chief's reluctance, Xu Ran urged, "You don't need to plant much. Just buy a mu of wasteland and give it a try. See how the harvest turns out."

Hearing this, the village chief began to consider the idea. If the crop proved fruitful, it could be a solution to hunger, and they wouldn't have to fear starvation. Nodding, he said, "Alright, I'll do as you suggest and buy a mu of land to try it out. But I don't know how to grow this crop—you'll have to guide me."

Xu Ran smiled. "Of course, no problem. When the time comes, I'll help you get the seedlings planted."

With their plans settled, the village chief left, hands clasped behind his back, smiling as he walked away.
