Chapter 51: Buying a Dog

 

 

Liu Tong noticed that Xu Ran had brought back those seeds and asked, "Ah Ran, are you sure this will work? What if we can't grow anything?"

 

Xu Ran patted his shoulder reassuringly. "Tongtong, don't worry! We'll definitely be able to grow them. If it doesn't work in one year, we'll plant for two; if not in two, then three. Eventually, we'll succeed. Once it grows, it'll produce much more than wheat."

Tangtang and Guoguo were inside, chatting while lying on the bed, whispering to each other about who knows what. Their cute little faces were full of mischief.

 

Seeing that they weren't upset, Xu Ran was relieved. He quietly shut the door, leaving them to their private conversation without disturbing them.

 

Unbeknownst to him, the two little ones were conspiring.

 

"Guoguo, Grandpa and Grandma always come to bully us. We need to think of a plan, or else when Daddy isn't home, they'll just keep picking on Ah-mo," Tangtang said seriously, frowning as he discussed the matter with his brother.

 

Guoguo was troubled. "But, Brother, we can't beat Grandpa and Grandma. What should we do?"

 

Tangtang propped his chin on his hand, thinking for a moment before replying, "We can't beat Grandpa and Grandma, but we can take on Xu Hui and Xu Qiang. Xiao Budian* said there are puppies at his grandpa's house. We can bring one back and let the puppy bite them."

 

[T/N: "小不點" (xiǎo bù diǎn) A term of endearment often used for a young child, meaning "little one" or "tiny." But it can also be used as a name, loosely translated to "Little Dot".]

 

Guoguo's eyes lit up. "That's a good idea! We'll ask Dahu and Gouzi to help us corner Xu Hui and Xu Qiang so they can't escape. Then we'll let YueYa'er release the puppy. YueYa'er's younger than they are, so if they bully him, we'll report them to the village chief."

 

"But we can't let Daddy or Ah Mo find out, or they'll be upset."

 

"I won't say anything. Let's go find Xiao Budian and bring back a puppy."

 

"Alright."

 

With their plan set, the two swiftly climbed off the bed.

 

Opening the door, they saw that Xu Ran and Liu Tong were busy in the courtyard, too occupied to pay attention to them.

 

Tangtang called out, "Daddy, Ah Mo, Guoguo and I are going out to play!"

 

Xu Ran looked up at them and reminded, "Be careful and don't forget to come back for dinner."

 

"Got it, Daddy!"

 

With that, Tangtang and Guoguo dashed off to the village chief's house. Xiao Budian, the village chief's grandson, had become their friend after they delivered chili sauce to his house last time.

 

Xiao Budian was seven years old, though he barely looked five—perhaps due to his name.

 

He also had a little brother who was five, and the two often played with Tangtang and Guoguo. However, they didn't plan to bring him along for this particular adventure.

 

When they reached the village chief's house, they began shouting.

 

"Xiao Budian! Xiao Budian! Come out and play!"

 

After a while, the gate to the courtyard creaked open, and a small head cautiously peeked out, scanning the area before sneaking through. Another small head followed—Xiao Budian's younger brother.

 

Xiao Budian led his brother over to Tang Tang and Guo Guo. "Why are you calling for me? There are no adults at home today, so they won't let me go out to play."

 

Guoguo glanced at Xiao Budian's brother and leaned in to whisper the plan about the puppies in his ear.

 

Xiao Budian looked troubled. "But no one's home. I have to take care of my brother."

 

Originally, they hadn't planned to bring the younger boy along. Guoguo looked back at Tangtang for guidance.

 

Tangtang, understanding that leaving a child alone was dangerous, relented. "We'll bring him along, but he can't tell anyone about this."

 

Xiao Budian's brother, Xiao Mi, quickly nodded and promised, "I won't say anything."

 

"Alright, let's go!"

 

With Tangtang's command, the little group marched off toward Xiao Budian's grandpa's house.

 

His grandfather lived on a slope in the middle of Xu clan's Village, the only household there, which was why they had dogs.

 

The children huffed and puffed their way to the house, only to find the door closed.

 

Xiao Budian pressed himself against the door and knocked hard. "Grandpa! Grandma! Open the door, it's me—Xiao Budian!"

 

Xiao Mi, mimicking his older brother, began knocking too, while Tangtang and Guoguo stood back, watching.

 

After a good while, the door finally opened. It was Xiao Budian's grandmother.

 

As soon as Xiao Budian saw him, he started chattering away, "Grandma, Grandma! Why did you close the door? I thought you weren't home."

 

"Grandpa is ill and resting. Why have you come all this way?"

 

Upon hearing that his grandfather was sick, Xiao Budian grew anxious. "Grandma, Grandma, when did Grandpa fall ill? Is he alright now?"

 

The old ger appeared full of energy, he was touched by his grandson's concern and smiled kindly. "He's all better now."

 

"That's good! Grandma, Tangtang and Guoguo want one of your puppies, so that's why we came."

 

He gestured toward the two boys standing behind him. "Grandma, these are Tangtang and Guoguo."

 

Tangtang and Guoguo stepped forward, greeting him politely with a soft "Grandma."

 

Lately, Tangtang and Guoguo had been eating well, sleeping soundly, and no longer worried about being bullied. Their moods were bright, and their already good looks had only become more radiant. Dressed neatly and cleanly, the two of them were almost identical, their charming faces glowing with happiness.

 

Xiao Budian's grandmother couldn't help but adore them.

 

He opened the door wider, inviting them in. "Come on in! The puppies are inside. They're just a little over ten days old. Go have a look."

 

The children darted inside, full of excitement. Xiao Budian's grandparents had two large dogs, one male and one female. The male dog looked fierce, and none of the children dared to approach it.

 

Xiao Budian's grandmother quickly tied up the male dog, and only then did the children feel brave enough to get closer.

 

There were four puppies. According to local belief, three kittens and four puppies are easy to raise, so Xiao Budian's grandmother hadn't abandoned any of them.

 

Guoguo eagerly petted each puppy in turn, their soft, furry bodies making him overjoyed.

 

"Brother, let's take them all home, shall we?"

 

Tangtang also loved the puppies, watching them sleep soundly. But taking them all home—wouldn't Daddy and Ah-mo be upset? And would Xiao Budian's grandmother even agree?

 

As luck would have it, Xiao Budian's grandmother came over just then. Tangtang quickly asked, "Grandma, can we take all of these puppies? We'll take good care of them."

 

Xiao Budian's grandmother smiled warmly. "If you like them, take them all. We can't afford to raise so many dogs, and if no one takes them, I'll have to abandon them."

 

"Thank you, Grandma!"

 

"Thank you, Grandma!"

 

Tangtang and Guoguo thanked him in unison, overjoyed.

 

However, they couldn't just take the puppies for free. Tangtang thought for a moment and pulled Guoguo aside. "Guoguo, we should give Grandma some money. Otherwise, Ah-mo will scold us for taking advantage of others."

 

"But, Brother, I only have three copper coins. Is that enough?" Guoguo opened his hand, showing three small coins.

 

Tangtang reached into his own pocket, pulling out three more coins. These were coins Daddy had given them for pocket money, but they rarely went to town, so they hadn't spent any yet. Since they'd changed into new clothes today, they only had three coins each.

 

"Let's ask Grandma first. If it's not enough, we'll go home and get more money."

 

Guoguo handed his coins to Tangtang. "Alright, Brother, you talk to him."

 

Tangtang took the six coins and went to Xiao Budian's grandmother, holding them out to him. "Grandma, is this enough to buy the puppies?"

 

Surprised that the children had brought money, especially since he hadn't intended to ask for any, Xiao Budians grandmother gently pushed the coins back. "No need for money. Just take good care of the puppies, that's all."

 

"Grandma, we'll take good care of them. But please, accept the money too." With that, Tangtang quickly stuffed the coins into his hand, not giving him a chance to refuse. Then he called out to the others who were still playing with the puppies, "Pick up the puppies! Let's go!"

 

He grabbed one of the puppies himself and took off running, with the other three children quickly following behind, each cradling a puppy.

 

Seeing her puppies taken away, the mother dog tried to chase after them, but Xiao Budians grandmother hurriedly held her back.

 

The four children didn't stop until they reached the bottom of the slope, where they paused, looking down at the puppies in their arms and grinning from ear to ear.
