Chapter 47: A New Acquaintance

Over the next ten days, the land-clearing progressed steadily. Most of the workers were diligent, but inevitably, there were a few slackers. Those were swiftly dealt with, as Xu Ran had promised. He paid them their due wages and sent them home, making it clear they would not be hired again.

It wasn't until those men held their wages in their hands that they began to regret their actions. But by then, it was too late—Xu Ran was a man of his word.

In the end, the results of the three groups were nearly the same, with two groups finishing slightly ahead, and one lagging behind. Xu Ran declared two first-place winners and one second-place team. Everyone who remained was rewarded, and they were overjoyed. They eagerly promised Xu Ran that they would never hesitate if he needed them in the future.

Xu Ran's strategy for winning them over had worked.

After the trouble caused by his eldest and third uncles's gers on the second day, no one else came to bother him. Even his father had not shown up, which Xu Ran found odd. But he wasn't naive enough to think the Xu family had changed—they were surely plotting something else.

Indeed, the Xu family had a scheme in mind. They planned to wait until Xu Ran had cleared the land and then claim it for themselves. After all, Xu Ran was their son—what was wrong with letting his father use the land for planting?

It was Xu Ah-mo who had proposed the idea. At first, Xu Houcai was against it, but when he recalled how Xu Ran had left them to be bullied by his elder and younger brothers' families, his resentment grew. To him, Xu Ran was nothing but an ungrateful, heartless white-eyed wolf.

After much discussion, the family decided that the plan was feasible and, with great patience, waited at home for the right moment.

Xu Ran planned to plant more wheat, potatoes, garlic, and radishes. For the wheat, he intended to hire help, but as for the potatoes, he only wanted the Wu Mei family and two others to assist. He knew they were hesitant to plant potatoes, unsure of the crop's yield. If they planted too many and had a poor harvest, it could mean going hungry.

Xu Ran, however, intended to introduce potatoes on a large scale to Xujiacun village, but first, he needed to test them himself. This was, in a way, his contribution to the village.

Since his family didn't have wheat seeds, and the villagers barely had enough for their own fields, Xu Ran had to go to town to buy some. Recalling the corn he had seen earlier, he decided to buy that as well, getting both seeds from the same store.

This time, Xu Ran went alone. Liu Tong was busy at home making clothes and had no time to accompany him. The two children, having gotten to know the village kids while helping out with work, had joined the local crowd, spending their days playing. Except for mealtime, writing practice, and sleep, they were rarely home.

Seeing how happy his children were playing, Xu Ran let them run wild. In addition to the kite from before, he had bought them several new toys.

The new batch of chili sauce at home had just finished fermenting. Early in the morning, Xu Ran and Liu Tong packed up the chili sauce, and Xu Ran carried it to town.

Xu Ran figured that once the fields were fully planted, he would buy a donkey cart. Otherwise, it would always be inconvenient to go anywhere, and he was growing embarrassed from always borrowing the Wu family's ox cart.

Walking on foot was much slower than riding in the cart. While the ox cart took only half an hour to reach the town, walking took Xu Ran a full hour, especially since he was carrying goods on his back. By the time he arrived, he was exhausted, stopping frequently along the way.

His first stop in town was Manager Chen's restaurant. Though it was in a somewhat secluded location, business was booming. The customers were all wealthy families, and none of them recognized Xu Ran, so he entered confidently, with no fear of being noticed.

When Manager Chen saw him, he greeted him enthusiastically, "Ah Ran! You finally made it."

Xu Ran set down his burden and massaged his aching shoulders. "Manager Chen, I've been busy at home clearing the land these past few days. I couldn't find the time to come sooner. But now that I'm free, I'm here."

"Well, it's good that you came. The idea you suggested last time has been working wonders, but demand has grown. What you've brought today won't be enough to meet the orders. Could you bring more tomorrow?"

"Of course! As long as I'm free tomorrow, I'll bring more. For now, take what I have today. I still need to buy a few things."

"Very well. How much do you have?"

Xu Ran counted the jars—fifty in total. After settling the payment, he hurried off with his now-empty basket to buy the corn seeds.

When Xu Ran arrived at the same seed store he had visited before, he was relieved to find the corn still there. Rushing inside, he grabbed the shopkeeper. "Is your master here today? Please, let me speak with him. I want to buy some seeds."

Recognizing Xu Ran, the shopkeeper smiled. "Ah, it's the young Master Xu! Our owner returned just yesterday. Wait here for a moment, and I'll fetch him."

"Thank you very much."

With only the shopkeeper tending the store, Xu Ran felt uncomfortable wandering about, so he moved to stand by the door, not wanting to be accused of stealing anything.

"That young man at the door—he's the one surnamed Xu," Xu Ran overheard the shopkeeper say from the back.

Turning around, Xu Ran saw the shopkeeper speaking to a young man.

With a polite smile, Xu Ran stepped forward. "Greetings, I am Xu Ran. I'd like to purchase your corn seeds."
