Chapter 46: Outrageous
Xu Ran's generosity, however, brought him some unexpected trouble.
Early the next morning, those who had worked the day before finished breakfast and headed out with their hoes. But Xu Ran's front door was soon crowded with new faces—people who had heard about the hearty meals and the rewards of white meat for the first-place team and had come hoping to join.
Xu Ran looked at the group and patiently explained that he already had enough workers for now, but promised to hire them for the next job.
The disappointed men had no choice but to leave without protest.
Of course, troublemakers couldn't be avoided entirely—this time, it was Xu Ran's eldest uncle's family and his third uncle's family.
This time, the workers had been hired by the village chief, who, after receiving rice wine from Xu Ran and selling him two hundred jin of brown rice at a high price, felt obligated to do his part. To help Xu Ran, he had chosen reliable, hardworking people, deliberately excluding Xu Ran's uncles and even his own father.
But Xu Ran's eldest and third uncles' gers didn't give up easily. They clung to Xu Ran, circling him with complaints.
"Xu Ran," his eldest uncle-mo began, "you've got work at home, but you didn't tell your own relatives? Why hire outsiders? That must cost you a fortune!"
"Exactly! You've got family—why not keep the money within the family?" added the third uncle-mo.
"Your eldest uncle is your senior, isn't he? How could you not ask him to help?"
"And your third uncle here, your own father's brother!" they chorused, taking turns pressuring him.
Xu Ran laughed when he heard what his third uncle's ger said. It's quite something that he had the nerve to mention how his third uncle and father were blood brothers. Well, they sure were brothers—both equally fond of taking advantage of others. Even the gers they married were cut from the same cloth. As the old saying goes, birds of a feather flock together.
If Xu Ran weren't worried about these two spreading malicious gossip, he might have given them a proper scolding on the spot.
"Eldest Uncle-mo, Third Uncle-mo," Xu Ran said, smiling faintly, "it's not that I didn't want to ask you. This time, I had the village chief hire people for me. When he came to visit the day before yesterday, you weren't home, were you? Yesterday, enough people showed up, so we didn't need anyone else. Eldest Uncle-mo, Third Uncle-mo, I think you should go back."
"But why hire outsiders when you've got family?" his eldest uncle's ger pressed. "If there are too many people, just send someone else away!"
Hearing these words, Xu Ran's temper flared. "Eldest Uncle-mo, how could you say such a thing? You're supposed to be my elder, and you want me to send someone away? These men are doing their jobs, and you expect me to tell them to leave just because my uncle wants to work? Should I tell them, 'Sorry, my uncle's here, so you have to go because you're not family'? Eldest Uncle-mo, you can say these things in front of me, but don't expect me to spread them around. And you'd better forget about this idea altogether."
"Why can't you say it?" his eldest uncle's ger retorted. "You're my nephew. Are you telling me you can't find a spot for your own uncle? Those men are working for you—they're being paid by you! You could easily send one of them away. I don't care what you say—you have to give your uncle a place, and I'll be handling the cooking from now on."
"And your third uncle needs a place too," added his third uncle's ger, eager to back him up.
Xu Ran's anger grew at their shamelessness. Why should he reserve spots for them? What did they think they were, anyway? Where had they been when he had fallen on hard times? And back when he was a fool, hadn't they mocked him at every turn? Now, they suddenly remembered they were family.
With a cold smile, Xu Ran spoke, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Eldest Uncle-mo, Third Uncle-mo, you haven't forgotten that I spent seven years as a fool, have you? Do you remember the things you said and did back then? Well, I remember them clearly. And when my brother was about to split the family, I was beaten bloody and thrown out—where were you then? I'd wager you kept your doors shut tight that day, scared that Tongtong might bring me, Tangtang, and Guoguo to your door."
"Did you breathe a sigh of relief when you heard we had gone to Wu Mei's house instead?"
"Eldest Uncle-mo, Third Uncle-mo, to be honest, even if we had been starving, we wouldn't have gone to your houses. I remember well how my father treated me, and I remember how you treated me too. Back when the family was split, it was made clear that whether we lived or died had nothing to do with my father or with you. But now that things are going well for me, you come crawling back. Do you think I'm easy to bully? Eldest Uncle-mo, Third Uncle-mo, let me give you some advice: karma may be slow, but it never fails to arrive. When it does, no matter how hard you try, you won't be able to escape it."
Both his eldest and third uncles' gers flinched at the menacing look in Xu Ran's eyes, and they let out a nervous yelp.
Xu Ran acted as if he hadn't noticed their fear. Calmly, he continued, "Eldest Uncle-mo, Third Uncle-mo, it's best if you go now, while no one else is around."
His eldest uncle's ger seemed ready to argue further, but his third uncle's ger pulled him away. With a sour expression, they both turned to leave.
Just before departing, his eldest uncle's ger shot Xu Ran a vicious glare.
Once they were gone, Xu Ran massaged his face, which had grown stiff from his forced coldness. Indeed, it wasn't easy to feign ruthlessness.
With those two troublemakers dealt with, Xu Ran happily headed inside to share his little victory with Liu Tong.
