Chapter 41: Relatives
The next morning, as expected, tranquility did not last long for the Xu family. This time, the entire Xu clan showed up, including Xu Cheng's two sons. With the whole family gathered at his doorstep, Xu Ran could hardly pretend he didn't understand their intentions.
He didn't invite them inside. Instead, Xu Ran stood at the entrance of the courtyard, speaking to them there, while keeping Liu Tong from stepping out. He wasn't worried about being ridiculed. After all, it wasn't him who should be embarrassed. Moreover, Xu Cheng was well aware that Xu Ran held leverage over him, and with Zhang Yue—the opportunist always eager to flatter the powerful—Xu Ran regarded the Xu family as little more than a nuisance.
What Xu Ran hadn't expected was that the pests in the Xu family extended beyond just these few.
Once enough onlookers had gathered by the gate, Xu Ah-mo didn't even have time to speak before another group suddenly appeared.
"Well, well, what's all the commotion about today? Are you all here to see my nephew's new land? I tell you, you people have been gawking at that barren land for years! What's there to see? Move along now!" The speaker's voice drew even more attention. Xu Ran squinted as he recognized the person—his father's elder brother's ger, his eldest uncle-mo*, another troublesome character.
[T/N: His Eldest Uncle's ger. Dabo-mo: "Dabo" stands for Eldest Uncle. And the "mo" is the same as in Ah-mo.]
Behind him trailed a crowd, including members of his uncle's family as well as those from his third uncle's household. Though his third uncle-mo remained silent, his expression mirrored that of eldest uncle-mo—a perfect picture of arrogance. These two brothers, after all, had both married into the same family, and they had become insufferable together.
From Xu Ran's memories, it was clear that the original owner of this body had deeply disliked these two families.
Xu Ran kept his silence, as did his father. But soon, someone from the crowd, who wasn't on good terms with eldest uncle-mo, spoke up: "Who gave you the right to speak here? Xu Ran's father is standing right there. When did it become your turn to talk?"
Eldest uncle-mo was momentarily speechless. Of course, he had known that Xu Houcai's family was present, but he had deliberately ignored them.
However, eldest uncle-mo wasn't foolish. He quickly changed his approach. "Ah, so my younger brother-in-law and his husband are here! I didn't see you in the crowd earlier. But really, with all these people blocking the entrance, how could you not say anything?"
With that, he slyly shifted the blame onto Xu Houcai's family. Xu Ah-mo, oblivious to subtlety, immediately snapped back at him. "Who gave you the right to speak here? I know exactly what you're after! Let me tell you, Xu Ran is my son, and those thirty mu of land are none of your concern!"
"Oh dear, younger sister-in-law! How could you say such a thing? I've never had any designs on Xu Ran's land. I only brought people here today to celebrate! Buying thirty mu in one go—now that's a first in our village! Isn't that right, everyone?"
"That's right! I have to say, my nephew is truly impressive! Everyone remembers how things were after the family split, right? My second brother didn't give my nephew a single blade of grass, yet look at him now! He's gone and bought thirty acres of land! Isn't that something?"
The one who spoke this time was Xu Ran's third uncle's ger. Xu Ran coldly observed as the two brothers took turns praising and mocking. He neither chased them away nor invited them inside.
"That's right! You know, before Xu Ran separated from the family, he was a simpleton. But soon after the split, he recovered! I'm telling you, second brother, you might want to look into this—could be that something unnatural has come into your home! You wouldn't want Xu Cheng ending up the same way."
"Exactly!"
The conversation had taken such a turn that Xu Ah-mo could no longer hold back. They could insult him all they wanted, but saying anything about Xu Cheng—his precious son—was crossing the line.
"You vile gossips! I'm going to settle this with you today!" Xu Ah-mo shouted and charged at them.
But how could he possibly be a match for the two brothers? Seeing his ger losing the fight, Xu Houcai also joined in. Naturally, the two families wouldn't stand by and let their own gers be beaten, and soon, a chaotic brawl ensued.
The surrounding crowd made no move to intervene. Some, fearing they might get caught up in the brawl, quietly slipped away. Others, braver or more curious, kept their distance and watched the spectacle unfold. The children, unaware of the seriousness of the situation, even cheered.
Xu Ran stood there, arms crossed, watching in silence. As the shouting and fighting grew tiresome, he turned and went back into the house.
