Chapter 40: Anger

Xu Houcai was at home, coaxing his grandsons to sleep. To his surprise, upon emerging, he found the house empty, which made him worry and consider going out to look for them. But as soon as he opened the door, he spotted his husband returning with their two sons in tow, their faces etched with anger.

"What happened?" Xu Houcai inquired, puzzled.

Xu Ah-mo shot him a glance before walking into the house with a frosty demeanor.

Xu Houcai then turned his attention to his son and son-in-law. "Ah Cheng, what's going on?"

"Father, while returning from town today, I heard that Big Brother bought thirty mu of wasteland. I told Ah-mo when I got back, and he went to confront him. On the way, he said a few things about him, and others overheard. They all followed us to Big Brother's place, but Big Brother said it was too late to talk and asked us to come back. So, we returned," Xu Cheng explained.

Xu Houcai felt anger simmer within him. Thirty mu of land! Never mind where Xu Ran got the money to buy it—how could the family not have heard a single word about it? And what was with his husband going over there late at night and being sent back like that?

"This unfilial son… Just wait until tomorrow; I'll show him."

Xu Houcai shared the same sentiment as Xu Ah-mo: that Xu Ran should have honored them with his newfound wealth, conveniently forgetting how they had once driven Xu Ran and his family out of the house.

Watching his father seethe with anger, Xu Cheng couldn't help but smirk internally, reveling in Xu Ran's predicament. Let's see how you handle this!

But Xu Cheng was no fool; he kept his demeanor steady in front of his father, pretending to be concerned. "Father, it's late. Perhaps you should rest first. We can discuss this in the morning."

After sending everyone away, Xu Ran entered the house, his face dark with anger. Such relatives, so utterly shameless, were a rare find indeed.

Seeing his frustration, Liu Tong comforted him. "Alright, Ah Ran, don't let them get to you. You know how your Ah-mo is. Just ignore them; let's focus on our own lives."

Xu Ran didn't want to waste energy on such wretchedness and softened his expression. "Tongtong, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have shown you my displeasure."

Liu Tong brushed it off, "It's alright, Ah Ran. I don't mind; just don't let yourself get upset over this."

"Yeah, I just didn't expect Ah-mo to behave like that. And I'm sure you don't know how I ended up in this mess. I didn't become a fool on my own; Xu Cheng poisoned me and pushed me down a mountain. He wanted to kill me to prevent me from taking the imperial examination and aimed to steal Zhang Yue from me. Can you believe I have such a brother?"

Xu Ran felt wronged on behalf of the fool and couldn't help but recount those events.

Liu Tong's face turned to one of shock. "How could this be? Do your parents know?"

"Of course, Ah-mo knows. Only my father remains in the dark. If they ever come to trouble us again, I'll expose everything. Let's see how Xu Cheng maintains his standing in the village after that."

Xu Ran had no intention of enduring any longer. The consequence of his earlier patience had almost cost him his life; he wouldn't be reduced to a fool again.

Liu Tong was incensed upon hearing Xu Ran's words. He had never imagined the truth was so dire. Clenching his fists, he thought that if Xu Cheng were in front of him now, he would undoubtedly give him a beating without hesitation.

Noticing Liu Tong's agitation, Xu Ran pulled him into his embrace. "Tongtong, don't be angry. I'm fine now, and it won't happen again. We need to focus on our lives and let him watch as we thrive. There's plenty of time to make Xu Cheng pay us back."

Still in shock, Liu Tong was momentarily lost for words. In a decisive move, Xu Ran kissed him, drawing him toward the bed.

What followed was a night of tender intimacy.
