Chapter 39: Seeking Trouble

The land had been purchased, but it would be impossible for just Xu Ran and Liu Tong to cultivate it all, especially with the emperor's regulations. They would need to find others to help.

Using oxen to plow the land would be much faster, but they currently had no plow heads and couldn't devise their own solutions, which was quite troublesome.

That evening, Xu Ran discussed with Liu Tong the necessity of hiring someone to clear the land.

However, their finances were tight, and they would have to wait for the next batch of chili sauce to be ready before they could afford it.

This year, they could plant some radishes themselves, while other crops would have to wait until spring next year.

Not only radishes, but potatoes could also be planted in winter. By spring, they would have potatoes to eat, and they could also grow some Zhe'ergen, which could be harvested and sold later.

The more he thought about it, the more promising it seemed! Xu Ran felt confident that if his plans were executed well, he would surely become a significant landowner.

What a delightful prospect!

Dreams were beautiful, but the reality of such days felt far off.

Meanwhile, at the Xu Household.

"Mother, did you hear? Big Brother actually bought thirty mu of wasteland today! Where do you think he got all that money?" Xu Cheng felt a surge of resentment at the thought of his brother's recent success, having earned so much wealth in just a few months.

Clearly, he was the most favored child by their parents, yet in everyone else's eyes, he could never compare to his big brother. Not in his studies, not in his looks, not in how he spoke or acted—and even the ger he was going to marry couldn't compare.

This feeling of resentment pushed him to the brink; on the eve of his brother's imperial examination, he had poisoned Xu Ran and seized his betrothal. He had thought that would be the end of Xu Ran, but to his shock, his brother had married that Liu Tong and even had children with him. And now, just three months after splitting the family, Xu Ran had purchased land, thirty mu at that! Xu Cheng ground his teeth in frustration.

Upon hearing that Xu Ran had bought land, especially such a large amount, Xu Ah-mo, who had been seated, shot to his feet, his face a mask of disbelief. "What? That wretched boy bought thirty mu? Where on earth did he get that much money? And with newfound wealth, he hasn't even come to honor his parents, just went ahead to buy land!"

Xu Cheng nodded vigorously. "I heard it from the villagers. They said the officials came to measure the land. I asked them whose it was, and they said it belonged to my brother. They even said he was impressive—saving so much money in just three months to buy thirty mu! Where did he get all that silver?"

"Indeed! Where did he get all that silver? We barely have three mu ourselves! I must confront him! That ungrateful boy thinks he can just take all that land while his father is still alive!"

As he spoke, Xu Ah-mo rushed toward the door, with Xu Cheng hot on his heels. Zhang Yue, who had just entered, also intended to join them.

The Xu family had just finished dinner when they least expected trouble to come knocking at night—trouble brought by their own troublesome relatives.

Hearing the ruckus of insults outside, Xu Ran felt a strong urge to slap his Ah-mo twice; that person was the epitome of outrageousness. To berate his own son in such a manner was more beastly than one could imagine. Even tigers wouldn't eat their young.

"Tongtong, take the two kids to bed. I'll step outside for a moment," Xu Ran said as he opened the door.

His Ah-mo's loud tirade woke many in the neighborhood, and most came out to watch the spectacle, some hot-tempered enough to shout back.

But Xu Ah-mo was unfazed, and Xu Cheng and Zhang Yue had thick skin as well.

By the time they reached Xu Ran's doorstep, they were followed by a throng of people.

Xu Ran, this time, didn't even open the courtyard gate. He directly addressed Xu Ah-mo, saying, "Ah-mo, it's dark now, and it's not convenient for you. My house is small and has no place for you to stay the night. You should head back. Let's discuss this tomorrow, alright? Look at the villagers behind you—they need to sleep too."

His words garnered many nods of agreement. Although people were curious to watch the commotion, it was indeed late.

Among the crowd, someone chimed in, "Xu Houcai's husband, making such a racket at night, are you trying to make sure everyone knows you're causing trouble for your son? Everyone, let's head back to sleep! With an Ah-mo like that, Xu Ran is truly pitiful."

Then came a chorus of agreement, and one by one, people began to disperse.

Embarrassed, Xu Ah-mo slinked away with his group. If he had stayed any longer, it would have confirmed the accusation that he was just here to make life difficult for his son, and that kind of reputation was not something he wanted.
