Chapter 42: Negotiations
In the end, both families limped back home to nurse their wounds. As for the thirty mu of land, which had been the cause of the whole commotion, it remained Xu Ran's. Though now, it had been trampled under many feet.
After this incident, Xu Ran knew the Xu family would likely resent him even more.
Not that it mattered. When the family had split, it was made clear that whatever happened to the two households from then on had nothing to do with each other. The village chief had even been present at the time, so the only thing missing was a formal document. Xu Ran wasn't concerned.
If his Ah-mo hadn't treated him so poorly, or if his father hadn't beaten both him and Liu Tong over a mere rabbit, Xu Ran might have considered taking care of them, even though he had taken over the fool's body. But after what they had done, he no longer felt the need to be courteous.
As for Xu Ah-mo, foolish as he was, his reputation in the village would only worsen after this incident. Xu Though Xu Ran might also face some fallout, it didn't bother him much.
Wu Mei had also come by to witness the commotion. After seeing that Xu Ran was unharmed, he promptly left. He was a busy person and wouldn't have bothered coming at all if it weren't for Liu Tong, let alone waste his time watching a scuffle between irrelevant hooligans.
Because the Xu family suffered a setback from the incident, they remained quiet for several days. Meanwhile, Xu Ran seized the opportunity, working with Liu Tong to prepare a fresh batch of chili sauce.
The chili sauce they had delivered to Manager Chen last time had already sold out. Today, on the tenth day of the tenth month, they needed to package all the remaining chili paste and bring it to town.
However, they weren't sure if the supply would last until their next batch was ready.
Today, the whole family was heading to town. Liu Tong had finished making new clothes for the two children, and he was working on Xu Ran's. But Xu Ran didn't mind. He had been a fool for so many years—what did he care about people commenting on his attire now?
The last time he and Xu An had gone to town, they were simply there to buy supplies. Xu Ran hadn't had the chance to explore properly, but this time, he planned to see if there were any corn seeds for sale, as well as fruit trees that he could bring back. He was determined to pursue farming as his livelihood.
There was much to buy this time, so Liu Tong borrowed Xu An's cart again.
While they were on the road, Xu Ran said to Liu Tong, "Tongtong, it doesn't feel right to keep borrowing other people's carts. Why don't we buy our own donkey? How much silver would we need?"
Liu Tong hesitated. "Ah Ran, we have enough silver to buy a donkey, but wouldn't it attract too much attention? We've only just bought land, and now we'd be buying a donkey too. It might not look good."
Xu Ran thought for a moment and agreed. It would indeed be rather showy.
"Alright, let's wait until next year then."
"Good. Today, let's buy some paper and pens for Tangtang and Guoguo. And for you too, Ah Ran. But paper and pens are expensive. We should also get some cotton bedding now that the weather's getting cold."
"Whatever you say, Tongtong. You decide what we need to buy; the money's all with you anyway," Xu Ran teased with a grin.
Liu Tong lightly smacked him. "You're so shameless."
Xu Ran chuckled. "You're my husband. Am I wrong to say such things? We can ask Tangtang and Guoguo if you don't believe me."
Tangtang and Guoguo, sitting nearby, looked at their father and Ah-mo with confusion. It was their first time riding in an ox cart, and their first trip to town, so they were too excited to pay attention to what had just been said. When they heard their names, they simply turned their heads, not understanding why.
"What do you think?" Xu Ran asked.
The two children, not quite grasping the situation, nodded in unison. As far as they were concerned, if their father said something, it must be right.
Their response brought another round of laughter from Xu Ran. Even Liu Tong, who was driving the cart, couldn't stay mad and ended up laughing along with him. In the end, he thought, let Ah Ran be—whatever makes him happy.
