Chapter 38

Several days passed in this manner, and Xiao Zimo's injuries had finally healed completely.

After lunch, he turned to Wu Bai's father and older brother and said, "Uncle Wu, Brother Wu, my wounds are fully healed now. I plan to head to the city tomorrow to send a letter to my family so they can come pick me up. I may need to stay here a little longer, and I apologize for the inconvenience."

Hearing that Xiao Zimo intended to call his family to take him away, Wu Bai's father and brother grew anxious. If Xiao Zimo left… what would happen to Bai-ger?

But when they heard that he still intended to stay for a while, their hearts settled once more. The longer he stayed, the more time Bai-ger would have to spend with him. Surely, Xiao Zimo would eventually realize just how wonderful Bai-ger was!

Once Xiao Zimo finished speaking, Uncle Wu quickly replied, "Of course, of course! Stay as long as you like." In fact, he secretly hoped Xiao Zimo would stay forever.

"Uncle Wu, I'm not very familiar with Yangjiang Province. Would it be possible for Bai-ger to accompany me to the city and show me the way?" Xiao Zimo asked.

"Of course no—" Brother Wu had instinctively wanted to refuse, but under Bai-ger's pleading gaze, he abruptly swallowed the rest of his words and changed his response.

His initial reaction had simply been concern over his younger ger brother traveling alone with an unfamiliar man. But when he saw the way Bai-ger looked at Xiao Zimo, he suddenly recalled Bai-ger's intentions. If he objected, wouldn't that be ruining his little brother's chances? So, he quickly changed his tune.

After thinking it over carefully, Brother Wu ultimately decided to go along with them to the city. This way, he wouldn't have to worry about Bai-ger's safety. He could simply keep his distance and leave the two of them some space.

Father Wu also thought this was a sound plan and nodded in agreement.

Although Xiao Zimo had been staying with them for some time and had shown decent character, they still didn't know him well enough to trust that his current demeanor was his true nature.

Xiao Zimo and Wu Bai had no objections to Brother Wu accompanying them. After all, it was good to put their minds at ease.

Since they were going to the city, they couldn't make the trip for nothing. Father Wu took the opportunity to list all the things their household needed and handed some copper coins to Brother Wu, entrusting him with the purchases.

In their village, people rarely went to the city. But when they did, they always took the chance to stock up on essentials.

Haining Village was situated by the sea, and the villagers relied on the ocean for their livelihood. While there was some farmland, it was not fertile enough to yield much grain. As a result, the villagers had long abandoned large-scale farming, only using small plots of land to grow vegetables for their own consumption.

Since growing vegetables didn't require much space, many fields were left barren. The villagers had neither the energy nor the need to cultivate large plots, so they focused only on the small vegetable patches around their homes. Because of this, no one in the village kept oxen for plowing, and there were no ox carts.

The only way to travel to the city was on foot, so people usually avoided the trip unless necessary.

Whenever someone did go, their neighbors would often ask them to bring back supplies.

This time was no exception. After Father Wu spread the word that his son was heading to the city, many villagers came over, requesting Brother Wu to buy a few things for them. Fortunately, most of the requested items were similar, so it wasn't too troublesome for Brother Wu to take note of everything.

Meanwhile, at home, Hai Zhu overheard that Wu Bai was going to the city and immediately felt envious.

He had never been to the city before. Whenever he needed something, his father or elder brother would bring it back for him.

Now that his elder brother was already in the city, and his father had no plans to go, he felt utterly deflated, lying on his bed in frustration.

Knock, knock, knock— A series of knocks sounded at his door.

"Who is it?" Hai Zhu asked listlessly, still sprawled on his bed.

"It's me. I have something to discuss with you," came Hai Shi's voice from outside.

Sighing, Hai Zhu got up and opened the door. Looking at Hai Shi, he asked, "What is it?"

Hai Shi leaned in and said, "Hai Zhu, did you hear about the Wu family going to the city?"

"No." Hai Zhu pretended disinterest, but his expression betrayed him. Hai Shi immediately saw through it and knew that Hai Zhu had already heard the news.

With a knowing smile, Hai Shi coaxed, "Your elder brother has been gone for days now. Aren't you worried about him? Why don't we go to the city and look for him?"

At these words, Hai Zhu's eyes lit up.

Hai Zhu's eyes lit up. That's right—why should Wu Bai get to follow his elder brother to the city while he couldn't? He had an elder brother too!

Without another word, he turned and hurried off to find his father, not even bothering to continue the conversation with Hai Shi.

Hai Shi watched his retreating figure and chuckled silently.

But he quickly schooled his expression and followed. He knew full well that with Hai Zhu's temperament, there was no way he could convince Father Hai to let him go. This was something he had to handle himself.

Sure enough, by the time he arrived, Hai Zhu was already standing there, looking dejected while listening to a stern lecture from Father Hai. Lately, Father Hai had been in a foul mood due to Hai Zan running away from home. And now, Hai Zhu wanted to go to the city as well? That was bound to infuriate him even more. A ger like Hai Zhu going to the city? Wasn't he afraid of being kidnapped?

"Uncle Hai, don't be angry," Hai Shi interjected smoothly. "Hai Zhu has already thought about his safety. Isn't the Wu family heading to the city tomorrow? Wu Bai is going too. Hai Zhu and Wu Bai are close friends—if they travel together, they can look after each other. And if you're really worried, I can go with them as well. That way, there will be five of us, and there won't be any risk of Hai Zhu getting lost."

As he spoke, he carefully observed Father Hai's expression. Seeing that his face had softened, he pressed on, "Once we're in the city, we can also inquire about Hai Zan. We'll find out how he's doing, and that should ease your worries too."

Just as expected, at the mention of Hai Zan, Father Hai's objections disappeared completely.

After a brief silence, he said, "Wait here. I'll go ask Old Wu if they're willing to take you along." With that, he walked off to find Father Wu.

Hai Zhu stood in place, emotions in turmoil. He and Wu Bai had already fought, so they weren't even friends anymore. But apparently, Wu Bai hadn't mentioned their argument to anyone.

Before long, Father Hai returned with the news—Father Wu had agreed.

The next morning, both groups gathered at the village entrance. Wu Bai traveled with Xiao Zimo and Eldest Brother Wu, while Hai Zhu was accompanied by Hai Shi.

Seeing Wu Bai, Hai Zhu felt a moment of awkwardness. But thinking about how this trip was only possible thanks to Wu Bai, he decided to take the initiative and greet him.

Wu Bai didn't bring up their previous quarrel and spoke to him as usual.

Noticing Wu Bai's unchanged demeanor, Hai Zhu gradually let go of his resentment and returned to his usual chatty self. He pointed at everything along the way, bombarding the group with questions.

They walked until almost noon before finally reaching Yangjiang Provincial City.

The first thing they did was find a teahouse to rest, drinking a bowl of tea to cool down before heading off to explore.

Brother Wu had been to the city before with Father Wu and knew of a general store that carried everything they needed. However, since buying things early would mean carrying them around all day, they decided to leave shopping for later.

Their first stop was a pawnshop. Xiao Zimo took out a jade pendant from his robe and pawned it for thirty taels of silver. It was the only valuable possession he had left after being washed ashore.

Next, they visited a bookshop, where Xiao Zimo paid a small fee to borrow ink and paper. He wrote a letter and asked the shopkeeper to send it home for him.

As soon as Xiao Zimo and the others left, the shopkeeper hurried upstairs to a private chamber, where several people were gathered.

He handed the letter over before stepping aside.

One man, seemingly the leader, unfolded the letter. His expression brightened. "Good. The master is still alive. However, he's instructed us not to disturb him for now. He'll contact us when he needs something. Let's move—our priority is to investigate the matter he just assigned us."

"Yes, sir."

Meanwhile, Xiao Zimo led the group to a tavern. It was well past noon, and apart from the tea they'd had earlier, none of them had eaten anything.

Brother Wu had never dined at a tavern before. He had only passed by them, so he was somewhat nervous upon entering.

For some reason, Hai Shi wasn't fazed at all by the unfamiliar surroundings.

Hai Zhu, on the other hand, had never been to the city before. But after wandering through the bustling streets, seeing grand taverns and shops far more splendid than anything in Haining Village, he quickly adapted. To him, eating in a tavern was simply the norm in a city like this, so why should he feel intimidated by something so ordinary?

As for Xiao Zimo and Wu Bai, their ease needed no explanation.

Xiao Zimo had grown up in the capital, where extravagant taverns were commonplace. Compared to those, this establishment was hardly impressive.

Wu Bai, in his past two lifetimes, had owned and managed several taverns himself, with Xiao Zimo's full support. To him, dining at a tavern was as natural as breathing.

Xiao Zimo had the waiter prepare a private dining room upstairs. Once seated, he casually listed off several signature dishes, then asked for a few more recommendations. With the meal decided, the waiter retreated.

As they waited, a familiar voice suddenly drifted in from the adjacent room.

"Young Master, it wouldn't be appropriate for me to sit. Please don't make things difficult for me."
