Chapter 39

"Big Brother?" Hai Zhu blurted out in shock.

At his exclamation, Wu Bai and the others realized they hadn't misheard—the voice truly belonged to Hai Zan.

Xiao Zimo reacted first. He flung open the door and followed the sound, leading the group to the next private room. Knocking, he waited for a response.

A ger dressed in servant's attire opened the door. Seeing several unfamiliar faces—three of them grown men—he instinctively tensed and asked warily, "Who are you? What do you want?"

Wu Bai stepped forward with a polite smile. "Apologies for the intrusion. We're guests in the neighboring room, and we thought we heard a familiar voice from here. We simply came to say hello."

Seeing that it was a fellow ger speaking, and noting that Wu Bai's words carried no hint of hostility, the young ger's expression eased somewhat. He took another careful look at them, ensuring that his young master had never met these people before, then said, "I'm sorry, but my young master does not know you. You must have misheard."

"That's impossible! I clearly heard my brother's voice just now!" Hai Zhu exclaimed.

The brief commotion at the door naturally carried into the room, reaching Hai Zan behind the screen. At first, when he heard Wu Bai's voice, he thought he had imagined it, but the moment he heard his younger brother, he knew for certain that he wasn't mistaken.

Hurriedly, Hai Zan stepped out from behind the screen and called out, "Zhu-ger!"

The moment Hai Zhu saw him, excitement surged within him. He turned to the young ger at the door and said, "See! I wasn't wrong! My brother really is here!"

Realizing that the "familiar voice" they spoke of wasn't his young master's but this country bumpkin's, the young ger hesitated. However, recalling how troubled his young master had been over this man lately, he stepped aside and allowed Hai Zhu and the others inside.

"Zhu-ger, Bai-ger, Eldest Brother Wu—what are you all doing here?" Hai Zan asked, pleasantly surprised.

Hai Zhu examined his elder brother carefully. Seeing that he was safe and sound, his emotions surged, and in an instant, he threw himself into Hai Zan's arms, sobbing uncontrollably.

Hai Zan had never seen his younger brother so heartbroken before. He quickly comforted him, "Alright, alright, I'm fine. Don't cry."

Just then, another ger stepped out from behind the screen, slightly later than Hai Zan. He was dressed in a light blue, soft brocade robe, and the moment he saw Hai Zan holding a crying ger with a face full of concern, a fire of irritation ignited in his heart. But seeing so many people present, he swallowed his emotions and held back.

Sensing that Xiao Zimo was the leader of this group, he walked up to him and asked, "May I ask what your relationship with Hai Zan is?" He had heard the conversation from inside but hadn't caught everything clearly. He only grasped that these people seemed to know Hai Zan.

Though his words asked about their relationship with Hai Zan, his gaze kept flickering toward Hai Zhu. Xiao Zimo chuckled lightly and gestured toward Hai Zhu. "This is Hai Zan's younger brother, Hai Zhu."

Realizing that Xiao Zimo had only answered about Hai Zhu, the young ger immediately understood that his intentions had been seen through. For a brief moment, frustration flashed across his face—why was it that everyone else could tell what he was thinking, yet Hai Zan, that blockhead, remained oblivious? However, he quickly masked his emotions, pretending to be calm as he said, "I am Yin Yun, a friend of Hai Zan's. You all came here to dine, didn't you? As it happens, we were just about to eat as well. Why not join us?"

"No need! We already booked the room next door. You can eat by yourself. My brother will join us instead." Hai Zhu, who had just collected himself, immediately spoke up upon hearing the invitation. He suddenly remembered how, just moments ago in the neighboring room, he had overheard this ger pressuring his brother into something. Naturally, he wanted to take Hai Zan away.

The young ger's smile stiffened. For a moment, he didn't know what to say.

By this time, Wu Bai had already recalled from his inherited memories who this person was—he was the sharp-witted ger whom Hai Zan had brought home to marry in his past life.

Seeing that Hai Zhu's actions might leave a bad impression on his future sister-in-law, Wu Bai quickly pulled him aside for a reminder.

"Zhu-ger, have you forgotten what I told you about the city gers? Look, the opportunity is right here, and you're pushing it away?" Wu Bai whispered.

"The city gers? You mean he is…" Hai Zhu glanced at Yin Yun.

"Exactly. But from the looks of it, your brother hasn't won him over yet. You'd better help him properly, not mess things up." Wu Bai cautioned.

Hai Zhu took another glance—first at the poised and elegant Yin Yun, then at the plainly dressed Wu Bai standing in front of him. Even a fool would know whom to pick as a sister-in-law. Without hesitation, he said, "Alright, I know what to do."

When Wu Bai caught the disdainful look in Hai Zhu's eyes, he suddenly felt a little dejected, regretting that he had reminded him at all. He gloomily shuffled over to Xiao Zimo's side, seeking comfort.

"Brother, I just remembered—the private room next door is a bit too small. It doesn't even have a screen like this one. Why don't we just eat here instead?" Hai Zhu abruptly changed his tune.

Yin Yun shot Wu Bai a grateful look. Though he wasn't sure how Wu Bai had managed to persuade Hai Zhu, he was delighted by the change in attitude. Without missing a beat, he warmly invited them again, "Exactly! Let's just eat here—it'll save the trouble of moving around."

"Yin Yue, go downstairs and tell the server to bring all the dishes from the private room next door to this one," Yin Yun instructed.

"Yes, Young Master," Yin Yue replied swiftly before hurrying out of the room.

Seeing that Yin Yun had already made the arrangements, Xiao Zimo and the others saw no reason to be obstinate. They moved past the screen and took their seats.

Hai Zan, who worked at the Yin family's textile shop, was technically under Yin Yun's employment. Naturally, he felt somewhat restrained in Yin Yun's presence. However, since he was surrounded by familiar faces and recalling that Yin Yun had always been kind to his workers, he pushed aside his nervousness and took a seat.

With the exception of Brother Wu, everyone present had already discerned Yin Yun's feelings for Hai Zan. Thus, when all had settled down, the only empty seat left was the one beside Hai Zan.

Yin Yun was more than pleased with this arrangement and naturally took the vacant seat.

Seated next to him, Hai Zan initially felt uneasy, but as Yin Yun engaged in conversation with Wu Bai and the others, the atmosphere turned pleasant and familiar. Gradually, Hai Zan relaxed.

At that moment, Yin Yue returned with the server, who carefully placed the dishes on the table one by one.

With the combined orders from both private rooms, there was an abundance of food, but fortunately, the table was large enough to accommodate all the dishes.

After indulging in a satisfying meal, Yin Yun had the leftovers cleared away and ordered a pot of fine tea to be served.

Since this was their first meeting with Yin Yun, most of the conversation revolved around Hai Zan.

From Yin Yun's recounting, they gained a clearer picture of Hai Zan's circumstances—how, in a moment of impulse, he had come to the provincial capital in search of work, only to struggle with finding a suitable job. Apart from fishing and possessing a strong build, he had no other skills, and after an entire day of rejection, he had been on the verge of giving up.

Just when he was about to return home in regret, he happened to witness a pickpocket trying to steal Yin Yun's coin pouch. Sharp-eyed and quick to act, Hai Zan subdued the thief with ease. In gratitude, Yin Yun had invited him to stay and work at his family's textile shop.

The Yin family was a renowned textile merchant in Yangjiang Province, owning multiple fabric stores not only in the provincial capital but also in the surrounding counties. However, Yin Yun's father had only one ger child, and unwilling to let the family business fall into the hands of outsiders, he had no choice but to groom Yin Yun as his successor.

It was precisely for this reason that Yin Yun, unlike most gers, often ventured outside—and it was during one of these excursions that he had met Hai Zan.

After finishing their tea and allowing time for digestion, the group decided to visit the textile shop where Hai Zan worked.

Hai Zan had come out today because Yin Yun had found an excuse to have him carry some fabric, so he rarely left the shop. Today was a stroke of luck—he just so happened to run into Wu Bai and the others; otherwise, they wouldn't have known where to find him.

Leaving the tavern, Hai Zan and Yin Yun led the way, while Wu Bai and the others followed at a slower pace.

Since there was no rush, they strolled leisurely through the streets, taking in the sights of the provincial capital. Yangjiang Province, situated by the sea, was one of the southernmost provinces of the Great Qi Empire. Merchant ships came and went in an endless stream, making the city a bustling hub of activity.

As they walked, the crowd ahead suddenly began to stir and shift. The people instinctively moved to the sides of the street, as if this was a familiar occurrence.

A luxurious carriage rolled past. The breeze lifted its curtains slightly, revealing a face of striking beauty. The person inside inadvertently glanced in their direction. However, upon seeing them, his expression immediately changed as if he had laid eyes on something filthy. With a slight frown, he turned away.

The carriage quickly disappeared down the street, and the crowd resumed its usual rhythm.

"Who was that just now?" Wu Bai asked.

"That was Tang Ling, the ger son of Yangjiang Province's naval governor," Yin Yun explained.

At the mention of the name, Wu Bai instantly recalled the book he had read in that endless space. One of the main characters in that book was named Tang Ling.

With that in mind, he followed up, "Do you know a man named Yan Shaoyuan?"

"Yan Shaoyuan?" Yin Yun shook his head. "No, I've never heard of him."

"He's a merchant from Yangjiang Province, dealing in jewelry. He should be one of the most prominent businessmen in the province," Wu Bai said, recalling the book's description of Yan Shaoyuan.

"The most prominent jewelry merchant in Yangjiang?" Yin Yun frowned slightly. "I've never heard of a Yan Shaoyuan. The leading jewelry merchant here is surnamed Wen. His ger, Wen Ke, happens to be a good friend of mine."

Wu Bai didn't notice the change in Hai Shi's expression behind him. After seeing Tang Ling, Hai Shi had initially looked mesmerized, but upon hearing the name "Yan Shaoyuan," his expression turned momentarily blank before returning to normal.

Hai Shi felt like he had heard that name somewhere before, but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't recall. Nonetheless, he quietly committed the name to memory.
