Chapter 37

Wu Bai entered the bedroom, holding the bowl of food. Seeing him approach, Xiao Zimo quickly asked, "What did Uncle Wu call you over for just now?"

"He thought I was trying to take advantage of you just now—that's why you were lying on the ground," Wu Bai said with an amused smirk.

Recalling the way they had collapsed together, Xiao Zimo's face flushed slightly. He raised a fist to his lips and gave a couple of dry coughs before replying, "I'll explain everything clearly to Uncle Wu later. I don't want him to misunderstand you—it was my fault."

Wu Bai waved a hand dismissively. "No need. I already told them the truth—that I couldn't resist your beauty and did something bold because of it."

Hearing this, Xiao Zimo's eyes widened in astonishment.

"What are you looking at me like that for?" Wu Bai feigned seriousness. "As long as you treat me, my father, and my brother well in the future, then my little lie to them won't be in vain."

"Mm-hmm, I'll definitely treat you all well—I promise." Xiao Zimo nodded earnestly.

"I believe you. Here, eat this. I need to head back to the kitchen for my meal. If you need anything, just call out—I'll hear you." Wu Bai instructed.

***

On this day, Wu Bai was helping Xiao Zimo walk around the courtyard.

Xiao Zimo had been bedridden for another two days due to his injuries. Now that he finally felt a little better, he didn't want to stay in bed any longer.

Wu Bai understood that Xiao Zimo had truly grown restless this time, so he helped him out of bed to take a short stroll in the courtyard. After all, the village doctor had said that moving around more would help speed up his recovery.

As they walked and chatted, the atmosphere was warm and harmonious.

Suddenly, the courtyard gate was forcefully pushed open from the outside, and an enraged Hai Zhu stormed in.

The gate had only been casually closed when Father Wu and the others left earlier, and Wu Bai had forgotten to bolt it from the inside, allowing Hai Zhu to push it open with ease.

The moment Hai Zhu stepped in, he saw Wu Bai and Xiao Zimo talking and laughing together, which only fueled his anger. In just a few strides, he reached them and raised his hand, aiming to slap Wu Bai across the face.

Wu Bai was momentarily stunned, completely unaware of what had come over Hai Zhu.

While Wu Bai hesitated, Xiao Zimo did not. He swiftly grabbed Hai Zhu's wrist and forcefully pushed him away. After all, he was a man, naturally stronger than Hai Zhu, who was a ger. If Wu Bai had tried to withstand the blow, he surely wouldn't have been able to hold his ground against Hai Zhu's strength.

Having failed to land the slap, Hai Zhu tried again, but Xiao Zimo firmly shielded Wu Bai behind him. Unable to reach Wu Bai and realizing he couldn't overpower Xiao Zimo, Hai Zhu's eyes burned with fury.

"What's wrong with you? Why are you trying to hit me?" Wu Bai asked from behind Xiao Zimo.

"Wu Bai, come out here! If you have any guts, don't hide behind someone else!" Hai Zhu bellowed.

"I won't. Not until you explain what's going on." Wu Bai wasn't foolish enough to step out and take a hit for no reason.

Seeing that Wu Bai refused to come out, Hai Zhu grew even angrier but had no way to force him. Swallowing his rage, he finally said, "What exactly did you say to my brother? He's run away from home!"

"Run away from home?!" Wu Bai was shocked. He hadn't expected Hai Zan to make the same choice as in his past life—and even earlier this time.

In his previous life, Hai Zan had also run away, but he had returned half a year later with many fascinating trinkets from the outside world—and a ger by his side. That ger was stunning, even more beautiful than Wu Bai's former self, with an elegant temperament. Though he wasn't as capable as Wu Bai's past self, Hai Zan's family was completely taken with him.

Because Hai Zan had loved Wu Bai's former self, but Wu Bai had married Hai Shi instead, Hai Zan had run away from home. During that period, his family endured much ridicule from the villagers. But when Hai Zan eventually brought back a more beautiful and refined ger, his parents regained their pride. They would boast to everyone about how their son's fulang was both lovely and kind-hearted.

That ger truly was kind-hearted and clever. He was also skilled in business, using the trinkets Hai Zan had brought back to open a general store in the village. This business brought significant profits to Hai Zan's family, further cementing their satisfaction with him. Even Hai Zhu had grown fond of the newcomer.

However, this success made Hai Shi envious. One day, he secretly followed Hai Zan to discover the source of his goods. On the way back that evening, brimming with excitement, he let his guard down and was caught by Hai Zan. An argument broke out, which escalated into a struggle. In the scuffle, Hai Zan hit his head on a rock and died.

The entire incident was witnessed by Wu Bai's past self, who had come looking for his husband. At first, Hai Shi tried to convince Wu Bai to help him bury Hai Zan's body, promising that with Hai Zan's business secrets, they could both prosper. However, the original body knew that murder had to be repaid with a life and refused to go along with it. As a result, Hai Shi strangled him to death as well.

After burying both Hai Zan and Wu Bai, Hai Shi returned to the village and deceived Wu Bai's father and elder brother, luring them away under the pretense of searching for them. Once he had them alone, he eliminated them one by one. Then, as if nothing had happened, he returned to the village and told everyone that Wu Bai had likely been abducted. He claimed he was merely gathering his belongings to leave with Wu Bai's father and brother to search for him. Since the villagers had indeed seen Wu Bai disappear, they believed Hai Shi's words without suspicion.

As for Hai Zan's disappearance, no one noticed at first. His family simply assumed he had been delayed while procuring goods. It wasn't until the second or third day, when he still hadn't returned, that they realized something was wrong. But with no clues and no direction, all they could do was pray that Hai Zan would come home one day.

"Yes! My brother told us last night that he wanted to find work in the city, but none of us agreed. He was completely set on it, no matter how much we tried to stop him. Before, he never even considered working in the city, but ever since you spoke to him that day, he's been acting strange. And now, this morning when we woke up, he was gone! Some of his clothes are missing, too—he's definitely left for the city! So tell me, what exactly did you say to him?!" Hai Zhu demanded.

Seeing how worried Hai Zhu was about his brother, Wu Bai didn't try to hide anything and honestly recounted his conversation with Hai Zan.

After hearing the truth, Hai Zhu was livid. He raised his hand again to strike Wu Bai, shouting, "Why would you say something like that to my brother?! He's always been good to you, but you actually like someone else?! Who is it? Is it this pretty-faced scoundrel?!" He pointed furiously at Xiao Zimo.

Hearing Hai Zhu call him a "pretty-faced scoundrel," Xiao Zimo's expression darkened instantly. His gaze turned icy as he stared Hai Zhu down and said in a frigid voice, "Who are you calling a pretty-faced scoundrel?"

Hai Zhu flinched at the sudden pressure in Xiao Zimo's demeanor but quickly steeled himself. After all, he wasn't wrong! It was because of this little flirtatious brat that Wu Bai had rejected his brother, forcing Hai Zan to run away from home! That realization reignited his fury, and he jabbed a finger at Xiao Zimo, cursing, "I'm talking about you! You shameless seducer, bewitching Bai-ger, ruining his life—nothing but a filthy adulterer!"

Slap!

A crisp sound echoed through the courtyard.

Hai Zhu's cheek stung as a burning pain spread across his face.

He stared in shock at Wu Bai, completely unable to believe what had just happened.

"You… You actually dared to hit me?"

Wu Bai nodded. "You ran your mouth without thinking. Of course, I dared."

"You bastard! I'll kill you!" Hai Zhu's eyes turned red with fury as he lunged at Wu Bai, fingers outstretched to claw at him.

Xiao Zimo immediately stepped in, blocking him once again. However, Hai Zhu was completely out of control. No matter how many times he was stopped, he kept throwing himself at Wu Bai, determined to tear into him.

In the end, Xiao Zimo had no choice but to have Wu Bai fetch a rope and tie Hai Zhu up. Only then did he finally quiet down.

If Hai Zhu hadn't been a ger, Xiao Zimo would have long since sent him flying with a kick. The only reason he had tolerated him this far was because Wu Bai and Hai Zhu had once shared a decent relationship.

Watching Hai Zhu, now bound, suddenly burst into tears, Wu Bai felt a pang of guilt. But he knew that some things had to be made clear. He took a deep breath and patiently said, "Hai Zhu, I know you're mad at me—for rejecting your brother. But he and I were never meant to be. The sooner he gives up on me, the sooner he'll meet someone who truly loves him. Would you really want me to marry him while my heart still belongs to someone else?"

"Hmph!" Hai Zhu turned his head away. He didn't want to listen.

But Wu Bai knew that Hai Zhu had taken his words to heart. Seeing this, he began to explain further, hoping to help Hai Zhu understand that relationships had to be mutual. If only one person was putting in the effort, sooner or later, the relationship would fall apart.

"If that's the case, can you guarantee that the person you like—this pretty-faced man—likes you back? Look at him. His background is clearly not simple. You think he's protecting you now, but I bet he's only doing it because he's down on his luck and needs your family's help while he recovers. Aren't you the one doing all the giving right now? And yet, you have the nerve to lecture me about mutual feelings?" Hai Zhu scoffed.

"My feelings for Bai-ger are genuine." Xiao Zimo stood behind Wu Bai, his gaze locked onto him, deep and unwavering. "It's not one-sided on his part."

Hai Zhu caught sight of that heartfelt look and suddenly felt a sharp sting in his chest. Gritting his teeth, he sneered, "Men's words are nothing but sweet lies. Who knows what will happen in the future?"

Wu Bai chuckled softly. "Believe what you want. But I believe him."

Seeing that his attempt to sow doubt had failed, Hai Zhu deflated slightly and leaned against the post he was tied to.

Wu Bai took this chance to comfort him. "Hai Zhu, I know you're still upset, but trust me—one day, your brother will find someone even better than me. Now that he's gone to the city, he'll surely meet someone from there. And a ger from the city would surely be far better than one from our village, don't you think?"

Hai Zhu's eyes flickered.

The more he thought about it, the more he felt that Wu Bai had a point. If his future sister-in-law was a city ger, then surely he would be a hundred times better than Wu Bai.

Hai Zhu shot Wu Bai a disdainful look. "Then hurry up and untie me already."

Seeing that Hai Zhu had finally calmed down and accepted his reasoning, Wu Bai loosened the ropes.

Once freed, Hai Zhu rubbed his wrists and shot a cold glare at Wu Bai before huffing and leaving.
