Chapter 36

As time passed, Xiao Zimo's condition steadily improved, and he was now able to get out of bed and walk—albeit slowly.

Ever since regaining mobility, he had refused to remain confined to his room. Instead, he spent more time moving about the courtyard. This way, he could see Bai-ger more often, rather than being limited to glimpses through the small window. In the past, if Wu Bai wasn't visible from that window, there was nothing he could do but wait.

Today, Wu Bai was in the courtyard, flipping and sun-drying various seafood. Xiao Zimo wanted to help, but his movements were still slow and unsteady, so he had no choice but to sit nearby and watch.

It was at this moment that Hai Shi arrived at the Wu household.

He knocked lightly on the door.

Wu Bai opened it, only to see Hai Shi standing outside. Without hesitation, he moved to shut the door again.

But Hai Shi was quick to react. Noticing Wu Bai's intent immediately, he swiftly reached out to block the door and called out, "Bai-ger, Bai-ger! Wait! Don't close the door—I have something to say!"

Hearing this, Wu Bai paused his movements and asked, "What is it?"

Since the courtyard door was now slightly open, Hai Shi caught sight of Xiao Zimo, who had been sitting under the eaves but was now slowly making his way toward them. Quickly, Hai Shi said, "Can you step outside for a moment? There's someone else here—I can't speak freely." As he spoke, he shot Wu Bai a meaningful look, subtly gesturing toward Xiao Zimo behind him.

By the time Xiao Zimo reached Wu Bai's side, he had already heard the words "someone else" from Hai Shi's mouth. His expression darkened instantly, and his sharp gaze locked onto Hai Shi.

The moment Hai Shi met Xiao Zimo's eyes, he was startled enough to take a step back.

Seizing the opportunity, Wu Bai slammed the door shut and, without missing a beat, said through the wooden barrier, "You're the only outsider here. I have nothing to say to you. Now leave."

Hai Shi was stunned. For a moment, he stood frozen in place. Then, hastily, he pounded on the door a few times and called out, "Bai-ger! Just open the door for a second—I really do have something important to tell you!"

Wu Bai, thinking there was no harm in hearing him out, replied, "Just say it from there. I can hear you fine."

Of course, Hai Shi had no real reason to see Wu Bai—he had only come up with an excuse, hoping to lure him out and talk to him a little longer.

But now that Wu Bai refused to open the door, Hai Shi had to think fast. His eyes flickered with an idea, and he quickly said, "It's about Hai Zhu. He has something to tell you, and he asked me to pass the message along."

At these words, Wu Bai let out a chuckle. Though he hadn't spent much time with Hai Zhu, he understood the man's temperament well enough. Hai Zhu was an impatient person—if he had something to say, he'd rush over himself rather than send someone else to deliver the message. Why go through all this trouble?

Hearing that mocking laugh from inside, Hai Shi immediately realized Wu Bai wasn't buying his lie. Worse, Wu Bai was laughing at him. His initial admiration for Wu Bai twisted into resentment, and malicious thoughts began to rise in his heart.

Lately, Wu Bai had been spending all his time alone with Xiao Zimo—who knew what might have happened between them? He was probably no longer even a clean and proper ger! And to think that Hai Shi had wasted his feelings on him, even stepping in to fight Hai Qing on his behalf!

The more he dwelled on it, the more bitter he became. He shot a hateful glare at the tightly shut door, spat on the ground, and stormed off in a huff. Wu Bai, he thought viciously, was nothing but a defiled ger, utterly unworthy of someone like him.

Inside the courtyard, Wu Bai listened to the fading footsteps. Once he was certain Hai Shi had left, he finally relaxed and stepped away from the door.

Just as he turned around, he caught sight of Xiao Zimo stifling a laugh. Raising an eyebrow, he asked, "What are you grinning about?"

Xiao Zimo couldn't hold it in any longer and chuckled outright. "Just now, when you said that Hai Shi was the only outsider here—haha…"

Wu Bai thought about it for a moment but saw nothing particularly funny about the statement. He frowned slightly and asked, "What's so amusing about that? He is the only outsider."

Xiao Zimo's eyes gleamed with anticipation as he leaned in and asked, "So, that means I'm not an outsider?"

"Of course not…" Wu Bai started to say, then abruptly paused. He suddenly realized that, in this life, he and Xiao Zimo technically weren't that close either. But then he saw the eager look in Xiao Zimo's eyes, and he couldn't bring himself to take back his words. Instead, he countered, "Would you rather be an outsider?"

Xiao Zimo immediately shook his head. "Of course not."

"Well, there you have it," Wu Bai said with a smile.

Hearing this, Xiao Zimo couldn't contain his excitement. He stepped forward in a rush and grabbed Wu Bai's hand—only, in his eagerness, he lost his balance. Before he knew it, he was falling backward.

Since he was holding onto Wu Bai's hand, he dragged Wu Bai down with him. Fortunately, Wu Bai landed on top, cushioned by Xiao Zimo beneath him. Wu Bai was unharmed, but Xiao Zimo wasn't so lucky. His fresh wounds, combined with his old injuries, sent a sharp wave of pain through his body, and he let out a muffled groan.

Wu Bai immediately tried to push himself up, about to check on him—

Just then, a head popped up over the courtyard fence. The intruder shouted, "Bai-ger, open the door for me and Father!"

But before he could finish, his eyes landed on the scene before him—Wu Bai sprawled atop Xiao Zimo in a most compromising position. He immediately let out another horrified cry.

"Father! Break down the door, quick!"

At the entrance, Father Wu, who had been prepared to wait, instantly assumed the worst. His son's panicked yell left no room for hesitation. Without a second thought, he charged at the wooden gate.

The courtyard door wasn't particularly sturdy—just two simple wooden panels. With a single powerful thrust, Father Wu smashed it open.

Then he froze.

There, in the courtyard, was his Bai-ger, lying atop Xiao Zimo, while the latter wore an expression of sheer agony.

This—this looked exactly like Bai-ger had forced himself onto Xiao Zimo!

Brother Wu, who followed closely behind, was equally dumbfounded. He had never imagined that his usually gentle, well-mannered little brother would be so... bold.

Wu Bai, on the other hand, had no idea his father and brother would return at this exact moment. He had barely registered what had happened before Father Wu had already broken down the door, catching him in the act—or rather, in what looked like an act.

Meanwhile, the neighbors, hearing the loud bang of Father Wu's collision with the gate, began to call over from a distance. "Old Wu! What's going on at your house?"

Father Wu snapped back to reality, panicking at the thought of nosy villagers getting involved. He quickly turned toward the direction of the voices and called back, "Nothing! Nothing at all! Just fixing the gate—sorry for the noise! I'll have it repaired in no time!"

Once he was sure no one was coming over, he turned back—only to find Wu Bai already on his feet, bending down to help Xiao Zimo up.

Father Wu hurried forward and took over, pulling Xiao Zimo from Wu Bai's grasp. "Bai-ger, he's hurt again. I'll help him inside—let's get him back to bed."

Wu Bai nodded. "Alright. Xiao Mo just fell again; he'll need rest."

Father Wu inwardly sighed. And whose fault is that? He didn't say it out loud, but the disapproving look on his face made his thoughts clear. He was finally well enough to walk, and now look—you've gone and thrown him to the ground! Do you have any idea how fragile he is right now?!

Brother Wu, realizing Xiao Zimo had suffered yet another injury, immediately turned and rushed off to fetch the village doctor.

As Xiao Zimo was helped inside, he couldn't help but be puzzled. He had expected Father Wu to be furious—maybe even throw him out of the house after what he'd just witnessed. But instead, Father Wu handled him with the utmost care, as though afraid of breaking him.

Shouldn't he be angry? Shouldn't he be demanding answers? Xiao Zimo wondered.

After the doctor re-dressed his wounds and left, Father Wu instructed Brother Wu to apply the medicine while he took Wu Bai aside, leading him to the kitchen.

Once there, he lowered his voice. "The person you said you liked before… It wouldn't happen to be Xiao Mo, would it?"

After everything that had just happened, Wu Bai figured there was no point in hiding it anymore. He simply nodded.

Father Wu's brows furrowed deeply, his disapproval evident. "Even if you like him, you can't just pounce on the poor boy! He just started walking again, and now look—he's probably going to be bedridden for another few days!"

Wu Bai noticed that despite Father Wu's chiding, he hadn't outright opposed the idea of him and Xiao Zimo. Realizing that his father had somehow completely misunderstood the situation, he couldn't help but feel a little mischievous. Smirking, he spread his hands helplessly. "Well, what can I say? He looks too good—I just couldn't resist."

Father Wu's eye twitched. He had raised a shameless son. "At least have some self-restraint! If you couldn't hold back, why in the courtyard of all places?! What, you could control yourself when he was lying in bed, but not now?!"

At that, Father Wu abruptly paused, his expression shifting to one of deep suspicion. He shot Wu Bai a sharp look, as if seriously reconsidering whether Xiao Zimo had already fallen victim to his ger son's advances while bedridden.

Catching his father's gaze, Wu Bai instantly understood what he was thinking. But he had no intention of explaining. Let him keep the misunderstanding. This way, my marriage to Xiao Zimo should go much smoother. I can't let Father develop a bad impression of Xiao Zimo, his future son-in-law.

Standing at the kitchen entrance, Brother Wu had also overheard Wu Bai's brazen words. His expression turned increasingly complex. He had never imagined that his seemingly gentle and mild-mannered little Bai-ger would be so bold.

But as an elder brother, his primary concern was still Wu Bai's well-being. After a moment's hesitation, he asked, "Bai-ger, if you act like this toward Xiao Mo… will he still have feelings for you?"

Wu Bai nodded firmly. "Brother, you don't need to worry. If you like someone, you have to go after them boldly—only then will you have a real chance. If I hesitated and cowered, would he ever come to like me?"

"This is a bit too bold, don't you think?" Brother Wu asked, still doubtful.

Wu Bai grinned. "There's an old saying—'The bolder the man, the greater his fortune.' If I weren't daring, how else could I make Xiao Mo mine?"

"…Where did you even hear that saying? I've never come across it before," Father Wu interjected.

"It's something I learned from Xiao Mo. You both know he's well-read—he recognizes a lot of characters and knows many great truths," Wu Bai replied matter-of-factly.

Father Wu: "……"

Brother Wu: "……" If Xiao Mo ever finds out he lost himself to his own so-called 'great truths,' would he regret not pretending to be illiterate?

The food had long been prepared, kept warm on the stove by Wu Bai. Now that Father Wu and Brother Wu were back, they sat down at the dining table. Wu Bai served the dishes before scooping a separate bowl of rice, adding some side dishes, and carrying it out of the kitchen—heading straight for Xiao Zimo's room.

Left behind, Father Wu and Brother Wu exchanged a glance before silently lowering their heads to eat.
