Chapter 32: Falling in Love (3)
Three months after his fracture, Lin Heng finally began rehab. He thought it would be extremely difficult after being bedridden for so long. But with not just his parents, but Zong Que by his side every day, the pain of movement didn't seem nearly as bad as the initial injury. From leaning on the bars to taking slow steps on his own, progress came much faster than he'd expected.
"Liao Yan and his mom left the city already," Lin Heng said, walking slowly with support from Zong Que.
Zong Que didn't have to carry him anymore, and just being able to walk again felt like a blessing.
"He transferred the former donation money to you?" Zong Que asked.
"You got it too?" Lin Heng said in surprise.
Since Liao Feng's debts weren't spent on his family's living expenses, part of Brother Hai's sentence had included the return of all Liao Yan's assets. So, the various donations and rewards that had been given out were ultimately returned to him.
And on the day Liao Yan left the city, Lin Heng had received a transfer.
"Mm," Zong Que replied.
That boy's insecurity had come from his family's situation, but there was pride and strength inside him. One day, he would find someone worthy of him—someone to spend his life with—and break free from his father's shadow completely.
"I hope things only get better for him," Lin Heng said with a smile, then changed the subject. "Oh right, we should head to school soon to handle the transfer documents. And let's travel a bit before the semester starts—after that, I'm guessing all your time will be eaten up by your studies."
"Alright," Zong Que replied.
The sun in July was scorching. During the summer break, only the competition class students were still on campus. As they walked past a window, Lin Heng glanced at the students inside bent over their desks and said, "I wonder if we looked the same back then?"
"We did," Zong Que answered.
They were just two ordinary people among countless others. Even with the system, his life wouldn't be much different from anyone else's. He would live it as his own, pursuing nothing more than these simple, peaceful days.
The paperwork for the transfer went smoothly, and now all that was left was to wait for university to start.
As Lin Heng stepped out of the academic building and stood beneath the shade of a tree, he looked off into the distance. The trees here had grown fuller, and the little garden was now covered in climbing vines—so thick you could barely make out the dorms behind them.
"Remember this spot?" Lin Heng said, pausing to confirm the location with a grin. "This is where we used to exchange things."
He wore a crisp white shirt and trousers, and the sunlight that filtered through the leaves painted his features in shifting gold. For a moment, he looked like he was glowing.
Zong Que nodded. "Mm."
Same place, different time—back then it had been night. Now, it was bright daylight.
Lin Heng looked around, then extended his hand with a teasing smile. "Hey, classmate. No one's around campus right now. Wanna have a secret love affair?"
Zong Que: "...That's a poor choice of words."
"Come on. This deal's got a limited-time offer," Lin Heng said, lifting his brows with a grin.
Zong Que reached out and took his hand. Their fingers interlaced as Lin Heng said, soft and sincere, "Zong Que, I like you."
The chorus of cicadas was loud that summer day, yet the boy's words echoed in his ears—clear and tender.
...
Across the country, the summer heat was relentless, but the city where their plane landed felt cool and damp in contrast.
"Sweetheart, everything for your trip has already been arranged by your dad's assistant. Mom's covering all the expenses," came Mother Lin's voice the moment Lin Heng got off the plane. "But you still need to pay attention to a few things…"
"Mom, this is the fifth time you've gone over this," Lin Heng said helplessly.
"Well, I just worry about your safety," Mother Lin replied. "You have to be mindful of all the precautions I listed. Danger doesn't just come from people—nature can be dangerous too."
"Got it. I'll read through your safety memo thoroughly," Lin Heng said, smiling. "I promise I'll take care of myself."
As he spoke, Zong Que gently tugged on his arm. Lin Heng looked up and followed his lead. "The exit's that way?"
"Mm," Zong Que replied.
"Also, kids, don't mess around," Mother Lin added from the other end. "Remember to lock the door when you're alone at night."
"Mom, you don't have to worry about that," Lin Heng said, glancing at Zong Que beside him.
He suspected that even if Zong Que was lying right next to him, the man probably wouldn't do a thing. They'd been alone together plenty of times already, and the number of kisses they'd shared could be counted on one hand.
After a few more warnings, Mother Lin finally hung up. Lin Heng tucked away his phone and reached out to take Zong Que's hand.
He thought maybe his mom should be more worried about Zong Que—this guy was way more innocent than he was.
All the travel arrangements had been made in advance. The scenery along the way was beautiful. But when they arrived at their destination, they found that each of them had been booked into a separate lake-view room. The receptionist gave them a subtle, curious look as they checked in.
"The views seem about the same. Which one do you want?" Lin Heng asked, holding up the room cards.
Zong Que randomly took one and opened the door to his room. "Get some rest."
"Okay." Lin Heng opened his own door and stepped inside. His mom had clearly overthought things—this guy was the picture of purity.
Zong Que wheeled his suitcase over to the wardrobe, unpacked all his clothes and hung them neatly, then grabbed a towel and headed for the shower.
After a long day of travel, it wasn't ideal to head out again. When Zong Que came out of the bathroom, towel drying his hair, he checked the time and decided to take a nap. Just as he was about to lie down, a knock came at the door.
Peeking through the peephole, he opened the door to find Lin Heng standing there with a device in hand.
"What is it?" Zong Que asked, eyeing the thing curiously.
"Checking for hidden cameras," Lin Heng replied as he looked at the still-damp man, suddenly reminded of that legendary eight-pack from a year ago.
Zong Que stepped aside, letting him in. Lin Heng walked straight to the window and pulled the floor-to-ceiling curtains shut, plunging the room into darkness.
[Report: No surveillance cameras detected in either room.] System 1314's scanning function was top-notch. No way anything sketchy would slip by.
[Mm, thank you,] Zong Que replied lightly, continuing to towel his hair. He didn't stop Lin Heng from continuing his search.
After checking every corner, Lin Heng finally opened the curtains again. "All clear. This place has decent safety protocols."
"Thanks," Zong Que said as he walked over and began blow-drying his hair.
He lifted a hand to ruffle through the damp strands, while Lin Heng, having put the device away, sank into the sofa with no intention of going back to his own room. If they were just friends, sleeping separately would be perfectly normal. But they weren't.
It wasn't that he had plans, necessarily—but he did want to be with him. Even if they didn't do anything, it was still better than being alone.
"What are you planning to do later?" Lin Heng asked, watching him dry his hair.
"Nap," Zong Que replied as he hung up the towels. "Aren't you going to rest?"
Lin Heng took a deep breath, choosing to ignore his mother's advice and follow his heart. "I don't want to sleep alone."
Zong Que looked over, the boy's expression carrying a trace of loneliness and quiet grievance. "Then sleep here."
It was a foreign place, after all—it was natural to feel uneasy on your own.
Lin Heng hesitated, uncertain. "You'll really let me sleep with you?"
"Haven't we before?" Zong Que answered, climbing into the left side of the bed.
Lin Heng was quiet for a moment. "It's not the same…"
"What's different?" Zong Que asked.
"…Nothing." Lin Heng sighed and stood. "I'll go grab my change of clothes."
He left and returned, and Zong Que didn't rush to sleep. Instead, he sat there studying the travel itinerary.
Lin Heng showered quickly, but for once, he came out with a hint of nervousness. The room was large, but compared to the bed, it still felt small. Sitting on the other side of the mattress, he glanced at the man scrolling on his phone and took a deep breath. "What are you looking at?"
"Tomorrow's route," Zong Que said, passing the phone to him. "See if anything needs adjusting."
Lin Heng took the phone and looked over the plan. The schedule was loose, just one or two stops per day—definitely a leisurely vacation. "You scheduled fishing so late?"
It was on the second-to-last day.
"I figured we'd be tired from all the walking early on, so we could relax at the end," Zong Que leaned over and added, "But if you want to fish earlier, we can swap it around."
Lin Heng had been at ease, but the moment he felt Zong Que's breath near, his whole body tensed. "No, this is fine. I like the way you planned it."
"Mm. Let's sleep," Zong Que said, reaching to press the curtain switch. The sunlight spilling across the room was slowly veiled in soft shadow.
When Zong Que turned away, Lin Heng handed him the phone and lay on his side, facing the edge of the bed.
Just a nap, he told himself. Rest now, have energy to play tomorrow. Their first stop was Butterfly Valley—it was said to be home to the world's largest birdwing butterfly...
Lin Heng closed his eyes, but his thoughts kept turning. Suddenly, he felt an arm wrap around his waist. His entire body stiffened instinctively, his back pressed up against the warmth of the person behind him.
His heart skipped. A flush rose rapidly to his cheeks.
If anyone told him there was such a thing as a "proper" man, he'd stop calling himself Lin.
"Zong Que." Lin Heng grabbed his wrist, his voice trembling slightly. "What are you doing?"
His brain short-circuited.
Even normally, it was risky for a guy and a girl alone in a room. Now it was two guys—both very much functioning, normal guys. Biology class wasn't for nothing.
"Sleeping," Zong Que replied calmly in the dim room, as if holding him was the most natural thing in the world.
"We're really sleeping like this?" Lin Heng's palms were beginning to heat up.
"Don't couples usually sleep in each other's arms?" Zong Que countered. "Are you uncomfortable?"
His arm began to withdraw, but Lin Heng instinctively tightened his hold on his wrist. "No, I just… didn't expect you to be so forward all of a sudden."
"I'm learning," Zong Que said, his eyes lingering on the vivid red of Lin Heng's earlobes, listening to the way his heart pounded.
Since he had agreed to be his boyfriend, then he would learn how to be a proper one—not leave it all to Lin Heng, or passively wait. That would be no different from silent sabotage.
"Mm," Lin Heng murmured softly.
"Sleep." Zong Que's nose brushed lightly against Lin Heng's hair as he closed his eyes.
The scent of the boy's hair was warm and clean. Comforting.
His breathing grew deep and steady. Lin Heng kept his eyes closed for a long time, but his heart wouldn't settle. He could believe now that there were truly decent men in the world. He didn't need to be a Lin—he could take Zong's surname instead. But sleep? That was impossible.
He could probably run a few laps around the hotel instead.
Was this guy experienced or not!?
