Chapter 33: Practice (1)

The room was dim and still. The breathing behind him was deep and steady. Lin Heng didn't know how long it took for him to calm down. Slowly, lulled by the rhythm of that quiet breathing, his thoughts finally began to still.

He gently held the arm around his waist, then slowly turned over, switching hands, and placed his own lightly down as he faced the sleeping boy.

Their position now was almost an embrace. Lin Heng swallowed hard, his Adam's apple shifting with the motion. His heart, which had just calmed, began to race again.

Though the room was nearly pitch black, his eyes had adjusted. At this close range, he could make out the contours of Zong Que's sleeping face.

Their breaths mingled. Lin Heng instinctively held his own. Tentatively, he reached out and brushed his fingertips across Zong Que's nose. There was no reaction, which made him sigh quietly in relief.

Couples were supposed to sleep while cuddling—though who knew where he had read that theory.

His fingers traced down from the bridge of Zong Que's nose to his lips. His lower lip was fuller than the upper, the color a deep, natural red. His lips had a beautiful shape. Most people noticed Zong Que's eyes first—calm, almost cold. But if you only looked at his lips...

Lin Heng's Adam's apple bobbed again. He silently reminded himself, He's your boyfriend. Then he leaned in, just a little.

He moved without thinking, unaware that the arm once resting at his waist had shifted slightly.

When their lips brushed, Lin Heng drew in a sharp breath and pulled back slowly. He looked up at Zong Que's peaceful sleeping face, cheeks hot, then leaned in again.

With this, they'd kissed more times than he could count on one hand.

But just as his lips were about to touch again, the arm around his waist, tightened subtly. Lin Heng looked up in alarm, meeting a pair of wide-awake eyes he hadn't realized were open.

He froze, completely at a loss for how to respond.

Zong Que stared at him for a moment, taking in the stunned expression and the flush creeping across his face. Then he asked, "Do you like this kind of thing?"

Lin Heng nodded reflexively, then shook his head just as quickly, then paused and gave a small, embarrassed nod. "I…"

Should he say yes? Or no?

Zong Que furrowed his brows slightly. "Which one is it?"

"...I like it," Lin Heng confessed in a small, almost defeated voice. Being in a relationship with this guy, subtlety didn't work—he just wouldn't get it otherwise.

Zong Que's gaze dropped to his lips. "Got it."

"What do you mean, got it?" Lin Heng followed his eyes, and in the split second his mind caught up—he was already being kissed.

In the dark, their breaths tangled. In each other's arms, they were warm, alive. Lin Heng could hear his own heartbeat echoing in his ears. His arms rose, wrapping around Zong Que's neck, and he leaned in, deepening the kiss on his own.

The young man holding him visibly stilled for a brief second, before responding.

Zong Que's kiss held an eager warmth, tinged with an awkward, restrained sort of inexperience.

When their lips finally parted, the room fell into silence, broken only by the uneven sound of their breathing—slightly out of sync, both a little too fast.

"Hey… your breathing's off," came a soft murmur.

Zong Que knew his was.

That kiss—it had stirred something in him, a physiological restlessness he wasn't unfamiliar with, but had never experienced quite like this. For once, sensation had overridden reason. And it was... new.

"Kissing is a sensory trigger," Zong Que murmured thoughtfully. "It activates the cerebral cortex. Then the hypothalamus—"

"Okay, okay, no need to start a lecture," Lin Heng cut him off quickly, pressing a hand over his mouth before he could ruin the moment. "I know all that already. Just tell me… was I your trigger?"

Zong Que looked into those hopeful eyes, recalling the softness of that kiss. "Mm."

Lin Heng's heart skipped a beat. He reached out and pulled him into an embrace. "Zong Que… you like me."

No matter in what way—it was still like.

Zong Que held him closer, letting the boy nestle deeper into his arms.

Now that he was awake, Zong Que wasn't the type to linger in bed. He asked, "Got any plans for the afternoon?"

"Thought we could go walk by the lake. Maybe take a ride on the speedboat." Lin Heng mused aloud. He made a move to get up and grab his phone, but his hand accidentally brushed Zong Que's abdomen—reminding him of something he'd forgotten.

"Wait… do you really have an eight-pack?"

"I do," Zong Que replied. "You can look."

He reached to lift his shirt, but Lin Heng instinctively grabbed his hand, nearly breaking into a sweat. "Okay, okay—I believe you! No need to prove it!"

He knew Zong Que was blunt, but this level of directness? He was not ready for it.

"Alright," Zong Que withdrew his hand and got up to open the curtains.

Sunlight streamed into the room, washing it in a soft glow. It wasn't harsh—it felt gentle, filtered by the breeze drifting in from the lake, cool and a little damp.

Drawn by the view, Lin Heng got up and walked to the window, gazing at the rippling, sunlit surface of the water.

Their room was high up, and while they couldn't see the far edge of the lake, they could watch speedboats zipping across the water. It was peak travel season, yet this particular area was only accessible by private booking, so the crowds were few.

"I heard there's a local street nearby with authentic snacks," Lin Heng said, turning around—only to catch sight of Zong Que by the wardrobe, in the middle of changing out of his sleepwear.

His eyes darted away instinctively—only to be drawn back again.

Zong Que had a tall, upright figure. He usually wore loose clothing, which made his waist seem narrow and his legs appear long. But now, even from a side view, Lin Heng could clearly see the smooth, well-defined lines of his muscles.

He'd said he wouldn't look—but if Zong Que's earlier comments about physiology were to be believed, men were especially prone to certain types of visual stimulation, often leading them to think with something other than their heads.

Lin Heng used to think he was immune to such reactions. But now he realized it wasn't that he couldn't be stirred—he just hadn't met someone he genuinely liked until now.

His stare lingered too long, too obviously. Zong Que naturally noticed. As he pulled on a loose t-shirt, he glanced over—but Lin Heng, for once, didn't look away like he usually would.

"You're not changing?" Zong Que asked.

Lin Heng didn't respond. He just watched Zong Que move around the room, gathering everything they needed. There was a quiet warmth in his gaze. He walked over and embraced him from behind.

Zong Que straightened and turned slightly. "What's wrong?"

"I'll be ready soon. Wait for me," Lin Heng said with a soft smile, leaning in to kiss his cheek before letting go.

His feelings for this person stemmed solely from his heart.

Lin Heng got ready quickly, and the two of them headed out. Everything they needed had been packed into the crossbody bag Zong Que carried.

Slathered in sunscreen, Lin Heng turned to him and asked, "Want some?"

Zong Que nodded. The sun didn't seem harsh, but the sky was cloudless and the air was fresh—prolonged exposure could still lead to sunburn.

"Close your eyes. Hold your breath," Lin Heng warned gently.

Zong Que complied, and a cool mist brushed across his cheeks before drifting over the rest of his exposed skin.

"All done," Lin Heng said after spraying him carefully. He glanced at the bottle. "My mom swears by this brand, but the size is tiny—just enough to bring on a plane. Feels like we're almost out."

"We'll pick up more after the boat ride," Zong Que replied.

"Alright. I'll toss this in your bag first." Lin Heng unzipped the pack and tucked the bottle inside. "You've got water in here too. If it gets too heavy, let me carry it for a bit."

"Those two guys are so handsome—should we ask for their numbers?" whispered voices floated over on the breeze.

"Probably not…"

"Oh, come on. Be brave. Girls take the initiative all the time now."

Lin Heng froze mid-motion, but the next second, Zong Que quietly took his hand. Lin Heng looked up, startled, only to meet Zong Que's calm gaze. Interlocking their fingers, he smiled and said, "We're going to be staying here for a while, you know?"

At the airport, people came and went so quickly that no one paid much attention. But here? They'd be remembered.

"So what?" Zong Que asked.

"Nothing." Lin Heng adjusted his pace to walk beside him. "Hey, do you know how to swim?"

"I do," Zong Que replied.

"I knew it! They're a couple. The bottom looks so obedient," came a soft, amazed voice—just quiet enough, but Lin Heng still caught it.

He resisted the urge to look back. Comparing his height with Zong Que's, they were roughly the same. "How do they even tell who's what?"

He genuinely didn't know.

Zong Que didn't answer—but the voices behind them did.

"I told you they were a couple. Look—he even sprayed sunscreen on his top, and now he's being led away by the hand…"

Zong Que stayed silent. Lin Heng picked up the pace and said over his shoulder, "I'll walk ahead. Be a good boy and follow me."

This time, he'd do the leading.

Zong Que obliged, slowing his steps a little.

"The top's so doting…" the voice trailed off as its owner moved in the opposite direction, stealing a glance or two as they passed.

Lin Heng sighed in exasperation. Zong Que finally spoke, "At first, they didn't specify it was you."

Lin Heng covered his face. Right—those girls had only commented that one of them looked "obedient." He'd jumped to conclusions and slotted himself into that role, then even tried to rationalize it.

"Does it bother you?" Zong Que asked.

"Not really," Lin Heng replied after thinking about it. He realized it honestly didn't matter. As long as it was this person, it was all good.

"Let's go," Zong Que said, taking his hand again.

The speedboat cut swiftly through the water, the breeze across the lake brushing away the last traces of summer's heat.

Lin Heng shouted into the wind a few times, heart lifted by the rush. When they reached the middle of the lake, he called out to the driver, "Sir, can you stop here for a bit? We want to take some photos."

"Sure! That spot over there has the best view," the driver helpfully pointed out.

Following the gesture, Lin Heng gazed toward the wooded hills in the center of the lake. "Is that the far shore?"

"That's Crescent Island," Zong Que replied, eyes narrowing as he looked into the distance. "It's said to be the most beautiful spot around here."

"Let's take a few shots here first, then head to the island later." Lin Heng pulled a camera out from the backpack and turned the lens toward the person beside him.

The setting sun spilled golden light across the lake, the shimmer of the water meeting the green of the distant hills. In the middle of that scenery, the tall and composed silhouette of the young man was striking.

Just as Lin Heng was adjusting the focus, the gaze that had been resting on the horizon turned toward him. He clicked the shutter instinctively, then looked down to check the photo—only to frown. "It's out of focus."

"Let me see." Zong Que leaned in, first checking the model, then fiddling with the settings. "What kind of shot are you going for?"

"A close-up." Lin Heng met his serious gaze and asked, "You know how to use this?"

"I've looked into it," Zong Que said.

He hadn't often photographed people before, but the basics were all the same.

Lin Heng chuckled and praised him, "Impressive."

Zong Que didn't respond. He simply picked up the camera, adjusted the zoom, and clicked the shutter again. Then, studying the screen, said, "This distance should work."

He handed it back. The image was still up: a young man sitting quietly against a backdrop of sunlit water and distant cityscapes. In the chaos of the world, the stillness of that moment was startling.

Lin Heng stared at his own expression, the soft light in his eyes captured without filter or disguise. For the first time, he saw so clearly how he looked when he was looking at Zong Que. All of it—the emotion, the quiet joy—was there.

He ran a thumb over the camera's body, raised it again, and took another photo—this time of the person now watching him.

"Looks like you're the better photographer today," he said with a smile. "I was supposed to take the pictures, but I think I'll leave the rest to you."

"I'll teach you," Zong Que replied.

Lin Heng's heart brimmed with something warm and full. He grinned, "Alright, master. Let's head to Crescent Island."

"Hang on tight," the boat driver called, restarting the engine.
