Chapter 30: Falling in Love (1)
The news of Lin Heng's injury hadn't been spread around. His father had personally requested an extended leave from school. Aside from Lin Heng's parents and the auntie, no one else came to the hospital.
During the early days of recovery, he could do little more than lie in bed. Even sitting up for long periods was discouraged. Lin Heng had expected it to be boring, but as the saying goes: a blessing may come in the guise of a setback.
Their fingers were interlaced as Lin Heng lay on the bed, turning his head slightly to watch Zong Que quietly reading a story aloud at his bedside. "You've been reading for a while. Have some water."
Zong Que loosened his grip on the book, poured half a glass of warm water, and handed it over—only for Lin Heng to smile and push it away. "I meant you should drink. I'm not thirsty."
Since it was best to keep his leg elevated above his torso, Lin Heng couldn't sit up for long. Watching TV or using his phone while lying down wasn't great for his eyes either, so listening to stories had naturally become their shared routine.
Zong Que's voice wasn't particularly emotional, but it had already passed through puberty and carried a quiet, magnetic calm. Sometimes Lin Heng found it hard to focus on the story itself—he was too distracted by the voice.
After taking a sip of water, Zong Que reached back over and gently clasped the hand he had just released. "I'll keep reading."
Lin Heng wiggled his fingertips slightly and said, "Let's talk for a bit."
With this person, there was no point in beating around the bush.
"Mm." Zong Que tucked a bookmark into the pages, closed the book, and placed it in the bedside drawer. Looking at the boy lying on the bed, he said, "Go ahead."
Lin Heng couldn't help but laugh at the tone, which sounded more like a meeting than a chat. "Are we having a conversation or holding a business meeting?"
Zong Que looked a little puzzled. "What do you mean?"
"Nothing," Lin Heng said with a grin. "Your competition results should be out in a few days, right?" He tightened his hold on Zong Que's hand.
"Mm."
"Nervous?" Lin Heng asked.
"Not really." Zong Que had confidence in how he did.
Lin Heng studied his face carefully, then smiled. "Guess you're really not nervous. It always feels like nothing ever rattles you."
"Are you nervous?" Zong Que asked.
"I'm not nervous about my own results." Lin Heng paused, then admitted, "But I am a little anxious. I mean, I trust you. Still, if something unexpected happens, we might have to spend a year apart."
"There won't be any surprises with my results," Zong Que said calmly.
"Alright, I believe you." Lin Heng shifted slightly and asked, "When's your birthday?"
Zong Que wasn't sure how they'd jumped to such an unrelated topic, but he answered anyway. "January 5th."
It was both the original owner's birthday and his—strangely aligned by fate.
"You'll be eighteen next year? That means you're younger than me," Lin Heng's eyes lit up. "According to what's said online, you should be calling me gege*."
[T/N: The word "哥哥" (gēge) is a Mandarin Chinese term that literally means "older brother." In certain contexts (especially in modern or online slang), "gēge" can carry a flirty or affectionate tone when used by someone to address a slightly older man they like. It's like saying "Oppa" in Korean culture, or "Daddy" in English. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)]
"I turned eighteen this year," Zong Que corrected, dashing that little dream.
The sparkle in Lin Heng's eyes dimmed slightly as he hesitated. "Wait, don't tell me you were in one of those elementary schools that did the six-year system*?"
[T/N: In modern-day China, elementary school (小学) normally lasts 6 years, though, in some areas, it can be five years.]
"Mm."
In the second year of high school, ages varied widely. Some students were only fifteen, while others were already legal adults—it all came down to when they started school and what system they were in.
Lin Heng's gaze lowered slightly, then curled again into a smile. "Actually, it doesn't matter. I could call you gege too."
"Mm." Zong Que didn't think the title mattered much. "Didi*."
[T/N: In Chinese, "dìdi" (弟弟) literally means "younger brother." But just like "gege" (哥哥 – older brother), "didi" can be used playfully or affectionately, and not just to refer to an actual sibling.
A person might call their younger boyfriend or crush "didi", either playfully or flirtatiously. But! It depends on the dynamic — some might find it cute, others might find it emasculating, depending on the context.]
Lin Heng choked on his own saliva and coughed twice, his cheeks flushing pink. "That word coming from you sounds like an insult. Forget it. Your birthday happened while I was away at training camp, didn't even get to celebrate your coming of age. When I recover, I'll make it up to you."
His boyfriend had become an adult without him even noticing. They hadn't celebrated. That thought brought a small pang of regret.
"Okay," Zong Que agreed. "We'll celebrate yours, too."
"No need," Lin Heng said with a bright smile. "Just the fact that you agreed to be with me… that's already the best birthday gift I could ever ask for."
He was looking forward to spending every day from now on with him.
"Mm," Zong Que replied softly.
—
A hundred days to heal bones and tendons—they still had a way to go before Lin Heng fully recovered. But already the school was calling Zong Que nonstop, one congratulatory call after another.
"Congratulations!" the homeroom teacher's voice was filled with delight. "Top prize in the National Gold competition! The guaranteed admission is locked in. When do you think you can come to school?"
"Teacher, I'll need a bit more time," Zong Que replied, glancing at the boy lying on the hospital bed with concern. "Something's come up at home."
Lin Heng couldn't be left alone just yet.
"All right, come when you can," the teacher said cheerfully.
Not only had he won National Gold, but he was also ranked first among all the winners—only slightly ahead of the second place, but first nonetheless. Regardless of the reason, he was number one.
A single school producing two National Gold winners in one year—the prestige would be unbeatable.
After hanging up, Zong Que returned to the bedside.
"Did something happen at school?" Lin Heng asked, a little anxious.
"Mm. The results are out," Zong Que said, sitting down. "National Gold."
Lin Heng froze for a second, eyes widening in disbelief before joy overtook his face. "Seriously?!"
With National Gold, early admission to S University was guaranteed.
"Seriously," Zong Que confirmed, watching the happiness bloom across Lin Heng's features.
It was his own achievement, but Lin Heng looked even more excited than he did.
Was this what love felt like?
"That's amazing! We can go to S University together!" Lin Heng couldn't hide his joy no matter how hard he tried.
"Don't move your leg." Zong Que pressed gently on his shoulder to keep him from shifting and disturbing his injury.
Lin Heng paused, then gave a warm smile. "Alright, Zong Que."
"Mm?"
"Your wish is coming true." Lin Heng reached out and clasped his hand.
He was genuinely happy for Zong Que—not just because they would attend the same university, but because he had witnessed with his own eyes how far this boy had come.
Once the last in their grade, a thorn in the teachers' sides, Zong Que had slowly but steadily pulled himself forward with relentless effort. He did have talent—but more than that, it was the late nights spent studying, the mountain of test papers and textbooks, all built from sheer perseverance. Those were the true testament of his dedication.
And now, that effort had been beautifully rewarded. How could one not rejoice?
"Mm." Zong Que raised a hand and brushed Lin Heng's cheek, his thumb gently sweeping the edge of his smiling eyes. "Thank you."
Thank you—for being genuinely happy for me.
Lin Heng's gaze quivered faintly. He laced his fingers over Zong Que's hand and grinned. "Hey… are you starting to like me, just a little?"
Zong Que didn't confirm nor deny—but he knew that a "no" would only sour Lin Heng's mood.
"If you don't say anything, I'll take it as a yes," Lin Heng teased with a smile.
"Mm." Zong Que replied softly.
…
Winning the National Gold came with immense weight. Especially for someone like Zong Que, who had placed first. Recognition poured in from all directions. Calls from various admissions offices came one after another, and the school itself hung up banners and put up festive decorations, treating the news with as much fanfare as Lin Heng's achievements.
There were classmates who were genuinely happy for him—like Wang Yang and the others. But, as always, there were also voices whispering behind his back.
"Wasn't he the worst troublemaker in school? And now he gets a recommendation? No way he passes the moral conduct requirements."
"As long as the grades are good, who cares about that?"
"He wouldn't have made it if it weren't for Lin Heng."
"If his family weren't considered low-income, he'd have been kicked out long ago. Got caught by the school a few times already. He probably cheated his way to that gold medal."
"Watch your damn mouth!" Wang Yang, who'd overheard enough, exploded. "Don't act like you've never gotten into fights before!"
"Yeah, but I'm not the one getting a recommendation!" the classmate shot back. "People like him don't belong in the competition class!"
"Right? He basically lived at the internet café!"
"As if you haven't! Ever heard of owning up to your mistakes and growing from them?" Wang Yang was furious. "Dragging others down doesn't make you look better!"
Good news rarely spreads fast, but gossip? It flies. Wang Yang called just as Zong Que was having dinner. Hearing the indignation in his voice, Zong Que asked calmly, "What happened?"
"Some people at school are saying you used to be lazy, skipped class, and don't deserve the recommendation. They're even suggesting your eligibility be revoked." Wang Yang's tone was brimming with anger. "They just can't stand to see you succeed!"
Wang Yang hadn't been upset when Zong Que surpassed him in rankings—he knew Zong Que had earned it. But now people who couldn't beat him academically were resorting to slander.
"How is the school responding?" Zong Que asked calmly, casting a glance at Lin Heng, who looked puzzled. He stood and walked outside to take the call.
"I'm not sure. I'm just afraid it'll really affect your recommendation." Wang Yang sounded worried.
"They're not exactly wrong," Zong Que replied quietly.
The original "him" truly wasn't a model student. And even if he wasn't that person, he had inherited his past—and the consequences that came with it. A mistake made was still a mistake, no matter who was at the wheel.
"But…" Wang Yang sounded frustrated, unable to reconcile it.
"It's alright," Zong Que said. "If I lose the recommendation, I'll take the college entrance exam."
If he could win first place in a national competition, he wasn't afraid of waiting one more year.
"Mm. I know you'll do just fine." Wang Yang's voice softened a bit. "Oh, by the way, do you know where Lin Heng went recently? Is he on vacation or something?"
"He's dealing with something right now," Zong Que said. "Thanks for telling me all this."
"No need to thank me—we can be considered brothers. Of course I've got your back." Wang Yang chuckled. "But as repayment, you better let me touch your National Gold trophy when it arrives—so I can soak up some of that academic genius luck."
"Alright." Zong Que chatted a bit more, then hung up and returned to the hospital room.
"Sounds like something really did happen this time," Lin Heng said softly, leaning against the bed. "What is it?"
"My past in first year might affect the guaranteed admission," Zong Que said.
Lin Heng tightened his grip on his chopsticks, his appetite gone in an instant. "Is it confirmed?"
"Not yet," Zong Que replied.
But the issue had clearly escalated. The impact was almost certain. And this had nothing to do with Lin Heng, who had always been a model student—someone his parents and teachers could rely on.
"If it really doesn't work out, there's still the college entrance exam." Lin Heng took a deep breath and smiled as he held his bowl. "Don't worry. Even if you have to wait a year, I'll wait with you. College classes are more flexible anyway. I'll study with you, okay?"
People should take responsibility for their actions. If it really came to that, finding a new path through hard work was far more meaningful than complaining about fate.
"Alright," Zong Que said as he sat back at the table. "Let's eat."
"Mm." Lin Heng smiled.
[Host, the medical knowledge I provide is far more advanced than what exists in this world. Even if you can't get into that school, you'll still learn the best techniques.] 1314 tried to comfort him.
Even though it had selected this body randomly, it couldn't help but feel a little guilty this time.
[Regardless of whether I go or not, I'll still study what the system provides.] Zong Que replied.
But what he really wanted was to integrate the system's knowledge with what this world had to offer—and use it all together.
[Oh…] 1314 sighed, feeling thoroughly outclassed.
Its host was just too diligent. Compared to him, it really was just a useless little assistant.
The controversy continued to grow, with criticism and opposition flooding in from all directions. Even the universities that had previously called to recruit Zong Que had suddenly gone quiet. Just as things seemed at their worst, a banner was delivered to the school office.
Emblazoned with eight bold characters: "Acted Courageously for Justice, Outsmarted the Criminals."
"What's this?" The teachers in the office were stunned.
"It's an award for Lin Heng and Zong Que," said the officer delivering it. "That major case in C City recently was very serious. When they encountered the criminals, they showed incredible courage and composure. They helped each other, reported the crime in time, and provided crucial information that helped us take down multiple criminal hideouts. We're awarding them this banner in recognition."
"Are they alright?" the homeroom teacher asked, astonished.
"According to their parents, they're fine. They just don't want to attract too much attention, so we're delivering the banner to the school instead." The officer handed over the banner, gave a salute, and left.
The homeroom teacher held it carefully, looked at the curious expressions on the other teachers' faces, and finally let out a relieved breath. "They really acted bravely."
"They didn't want to make a fuss, but we should still give them public recognition," said the biology teacher. "The principal will definitely agree."
The mistakes Zong Que had made in the past weren't anything too serious. Just a hot-tempered boy getting into arguments and occasional fights—nothing the teachers hadn't seen before. School-wide reprimands were common. He might have lacked virtue at the time, but true education lies in helping students learn from their mistakes and turn their lives around.
Wrongdoings deserve discipline, but good deeds deserve praise.
