Chapter 29: Let's Give It A Try (3)

"Careful," Zong Que said gently, helping Lin Heng out of bed. The cast on his leg was heavy, and his movements were labored. Zong Que supported him carefully as he moved, inching along one leg at a time. Though the bathroom was just a short walk away, it felt like miles.

It took a while—so long that even Lin Heng was beginning to feel a little impatient. But Zong Que showed no hint of frustration.

"Hold on to this," he said, guiding Lin Heng to grip a handle before stepping out of the bathroom himself.

Only when he heard Lin Heng call for him did he come back inside, helping him slowly back to bed.

Though it was the same distance, Lin Heng clung tightly to his shoulder, with full trust that he wouldn't fall. As he looked at Zong Que's calm, patient expression, he couldn't stop the question that had been lingering in his heart: "Zong Que, are you this good to all your friends?"

"No," Zong Que answered without hesitation.

"Why not?" Lin Heng paused, looking up at him.

Zong Que met his gaze, seeing the stubbornness in his young face. He answered, "There are many reasons."

"It's not just because I saved you, is it?" Lin Heng asked.

"Mm."

Of course it wasn't just that. Before Lin Heng had confessed, Zong Que had truly considered him a friend.

That warmth and kindness, that thoughtful care without asking for anything in return—those were the most beautiful colors in a person.

Zong Que himself lacked warmth, but Lin Heng was full of it. And warmth, after all, was something everyone yearned to be near.

Looking at the man's expression, Lin Heng suddenly felt a sliver of confidence. "Am I special to you?"

"Mm," Zong Que said, affirming it without pause.

Even if they could no longer be called friends, if something happened to Lin Heng, Zong Que would never just stand by and do nothing.

Lin Heng's eyes shimmered, a bit wronged and yet a little happy. "Back then, you said you didn't need love. Does that mean you'll never fall in love with anyone?"

"I won't," Zong Que replied.

"Why?" Lin Heng couldn't understand.

If he was someone special, if he was treated with such care, then why couldn't it be love?

Zong Que was silent for a moment. Then he said, "I don't feel that kind of emotion."

Love, with its exclusivity, its insistence on only that one person, on the pain of separation and the sweetness of presence—he felt none of it. It was as though the part of his heart that was meant to experience love had been missing from the start, destined only to let others down.

Lin Heng was stunned. After a long silence, he said, "So when you said you weren't looking for love… you meant never, didn't you."

"Yes. You should lie back down now," Zong Que said, steadying him.

But Lin Heng didn't move. He just looked at him and said softly, "What if I told you… I don't mind? I don't mind that you won't return my feelings. If that's the case, could you stay by my side?"

"Lin Heng," Zong Que said quietly, meeting his eyes, "People are greedy by nature. At first, we're willing to give without expecting anything. But once we get a little, we start wanting more. And when we can't have it, we begin to resent the other person—for not fulfilling the version of them we imagined. In the end… it's never as good as the beginning."

His words were clear and rational. Lin Heng's heart sank slightly. He was afraid of that outcome. But still…

"Zong Que," Lin Heng looked at him directly, "I won't be like that. Do you dare to take that gamble? If you're not afraid of losing, why not give it a try?"

Zong Que knew the boy standing before him was brave. But he wasn't afraid—he simply didn't think it was necessary.

"I'm tired of walking," Lin Heng changed the subject without waiting for Zong Que's reply, "carry me back, will you?"

Zong Que bent down and gently lifted him into his arms. After days of light meals, Lin Heng's weight had clearly dropped.

As he walked, Lin Heng's arms wrapped around his shoulders and neck. It was already a close embrace, but that simple gesture brought them even closer.

"Zong Que," the boy's voice brushed against his ear, soft and close, his face just inches away, as if he were sleep-talking, or confessing, "Date me. You really won't lose anything."

His eyelashes seemed to shimmer with sunlight and tenderness, gleaming like water. But all Zong Que could think of was that single drop of water that had once fallen onto the back of his hand.

He reached the bedside, bent down, and gently laid Lin Heng down again. Seeing the dimming light in his eyes, Zong Que finally spoke.

"Let's give it a try."

"If you don't want to…" Lin Heng began, then choked on his words. He looked up in disbelief and grabbed Zong Que's collar. "What did you just say? You can't take it back!"

"Mm. Let's try it. If you ever feel uncomfortable or if it doesn't feel right… then we can part ways. Is that okay?" Zong Que asked.

Maybe after trying, he would finally give up.

"That makes you sound like such a jerk," Lin Heng tightened his grip, his eyes shimmering with tears, but a smile played on his lips. "You know I'd say yes."

He didn't want to be ruled out without even a chance.

"Mm. Lie down properly," Zong Que said, gently prying Lin Heng's hand off his collar and grasping his wrist.

Caught off guard by the calm way he handled it, Lin Heng still obediently followed his guidance, lying back down. As Zong Que adjusted his leg and gently lifted it into place, Lin Heng stared at him, unwavering.

"Zong Que, you really agreed to date me."

"Mm." Zong Que pulled the light blanket over his stomach and sat beside the bed. "You already asked me that."

"I just wanted to confirm," Lin Heng said, eyes fixed on him. "It still feels a little unreal."

Zong Que didn't quite understand the joy in his voice. "There won't be much difference from before."

"Oh, but there's a big difference," Lin Heng replied, his expression growing a little nervous. "Dating someone isn't at all the same as being friends. Now… give me your hand."

Zong Que extended his hand, and Lin Heng gently laced their fingers together.

Zong Que's palm was dry. Lin Heng's, however, held a trace of warmth and moisture. His gaze shimmered with nervousness and shyness, but his expression was serious.

"Friends don't do this kind of thing."

Zong Que looked down at their joined hands. "This makes you happy?"

Lin Heng nodded softly. "It does. But this isn't the only thing."

His eyes twinkled as they shifted slightly. "There are so many things lovers can do that friends can't. We can take our time exploring them."

"Mm," Zong Que replied.

Since he had agreed, he would do his best to be a responsible partner.

Lin Heng smiled, fingers tightening just a little.

They held hands for a long time. When the door to the hospital room was knocked on, Zong Que finally let go.

"I'll get it," he said.

"Okay." Lin Heng smiled.

The door opened, and a nurse came in pushing a cart. "Hello, it's time for your IV."

After connecting the drip, she reminded them when the dressing would need changing and then wheeled the cart out of the room.

As the door clicked shut again, Lin Heng looked up at the IV line and asked softly, "How many more days will I need this?"

He wasn't usually bothered by IVs, but in his current state, they made him need the restroom far too often.

"Six more days. It'll help you recover faster." Zong Que sat by the bed.

Though the medication from the system would heal him at what a normal person might consider a miraculous rate, the repair process still took time.

Lin Heng turned to him and stretched out the hand without the IV. "Zong Que."

"Mm?" Zong Que looked over.

"Hold my hand again." Lin Heng tugged gently at his sleeve. "My hands and feet always get cold when I'm on an IV."

Even before he finished the sentence, his hand had already found its way back into that warm, dry palm. His heart thudded twice, quick and strong, and the smile at the corner of his lips couldn't be suppressed. "Is this too much to ask?"

Zong Que blinked. "What is?"

Lin Heng gave a small laugh, gripping his hand a little tighter. "Nothing."

Zong Que had been right—Lin Heng would ask for more. But this person was allowing it.

1314 had long since stopped following TV dramas. Now it watched its host's new romance unfold in quiet fascination. Sure, its host's way of dating wasn't exactly normal… but it was kind of fun.

After all, if a seed is planted deep enough, even wood can bloom.

There were three bags of IV fluid to go—drop by drop, it would take hours. Time dragged on. At first, Lin Heng stared at the person beside his bed, but eventually, the medication took effect and he drifted into a peaceful sleep.

His breathing grew calm. Zong Que carefully slipped his hand out of Lin Heng's and tucked his arm back under the blanket.

[Host, congratulations on starting a relationship!] 1314 chirped merrily.

[Mm.] Zong Que's tone betrayed no emotion. He stood up and began packing away Lin Heng's used clothes into a bag, intending to take them home and wash them.

The hospital had laundry machines, of course, but Lin Heng couldn't tolerate shared-use items.

[You're not happy?] 1314 asked.

[It's fine.] Zong Que replied.

There wasn't anything particularly happy or unhappy about it. But he did want Lin Heng to be happy.

The nurse came in a few times to change the IV bag. By the time the final drip ended, Zong Que had just received dinner from the housekeeper. He closed the door softly and nudged the sleeping figure. "Lin Heng."

"Don't bother me…" The boy mumbled drowsily.

"Dinner first." Zong Que gently shook him.

Having his biological rhythm disrupted, Lin Heng always felt uncomfortable when waking from deep sleep. But sleep also helped him heal.

"Mm." Lin Heng blinked his eyes open, heavy with sleep and confusion. The moment he recognized the person beside him, it all turned to joy. He reached out a hand. "You know the best way to wake someone up?"

Zong Que ignored the outstretched hand. He sat beside him, bracing his shoulder to help him up, then placed a cushion behind him. "Time to eat."

Lin Heng dropped his hand, but joy still danced across his eyes and brows. "Why won't you fall for it?"

"Because the way you're going about it will strain your leg." As Zong Que withdrew his hand, something soft brushed against his cheek—a fleeting touch, as gentle as a dragonfly skimming water, steeped in the purest kind of affection.

"Zong Que, I like you," Lin Heng said with a smile.

He really, really liked this person—whether by tricks or coaxing, he was his now.

"Mm. Do you need the bathroom?" Zong Que asked as he stood up.

Lin Heng fell silent for a moment, feeling like they were having two completely different conversations. "You're really going to ask that during such a romantic moment?"

"So, do you?" Zong Que asked again.

It took Lin Heng a second too long to respond—just enough to realize the side effects of the IV had kicked in. "…Yes."

The word barely left his lips before Zong Que had slipped an arm under his back and the other beneath his legs, lifting him into a bridal carry. Their faces were so close, breath mingling. Lin Heng instinctively reached out to steady himself—and felt his heartbeat speed up again.

Forget romance. If this person ever really turned romantic, he didn't think he could handle it.

Author's Note:

Don't copy him—Lin Heng has known Zong Que for over a year. Zong Que treats him very well and is generous in all things.
