Chapter 31: Falling in Love (2)

In the afternoon, during free period, the broadcasting station either played relaxing music or read out announcements.

That afternoon was no exception. Most students paid it little mind—until the names Zong Que and Lin Heng were mentioned. Ears perked up across campus.

"When did they do something so heroic?"

"They got a banner? Sent to the principal's office?"

"They helped catch a bunch of criminals and probably saved who knows how many people."

Though the incident wasn't widely publicized, it was enough to ease the tension and prompt a reevaluation of Zong Que's deferred admission status.

The news hadn't yet reached the hospital, but Lin Heng found out through his mother. "Multiple criminal hideouts?" he asked, startled.

"The one who went after you hired thugs with money and influence," Mother Lin sighed. "He even tried to use our family's assets to lure people in. He was desperate to escape and ended up injuring several others in the process. The first round of trials has already uncovered a lot—like pulling weeds with deep roots. It really did help the investigation, and Zong Que was truly brave."

The target had been Lin Heng, and their whole family. Even with bodyguards around, if a single one of those men had gotten through, Lin Heng's injuries could have been a hundred times worse.

Just thinking of that possibility made Mother Lin shudder. She hadn't been able to sleep well since.

"What about Zong Que's admission?" Lin Heng couldn't help but ask.

"The school says they're still deliberating," Mother Lin replied while peeling an apple, a smile tugging at her lips. "But what he did was definitely a major contribution." Then she glanced over. "From the way you're asking... did something happen between you two?"

"No matter what happens, I just want him to be okay," Lin Heng said earnestly.

"Silly boy." Mother Lin chuckled. "Just like I was at your age. But silly boys have their own kind of luck. The doctor said you're healing very well, and Zong Que has taken excellent care of you."

Lin Heng couldn't stop the soft smile that curled at the corners of his lips. "Mm."

His injury had mainly affected his lower leg, and after more than a month of rest, the doctor finally allowed him to move around using crutches. Around that time, the verdict came down for Brother Hai's group.

With multiple injuries and even deaths, and given the grave nature of the crimes, the sentence was clear: death penalty, to be carried out immediately.

"Karma really came for them," Lin Heng said, sitting in a wheelchair as the scenery slowly passed by. After being cooped up in bed for so long, it felt good to finally bask in the sun again.

"Too hot?" Zong Que asked, glancing at the sun above as he pushed the chair.

"It's just right. Help me walk a bit," Lin Heng said, eyeing the smooth path ahead.

Without regular movement, the muscles would atrophy, and rehab would only become more difficult later.

"Mm." Zong Que stopped the wheelchair, gently bracing Lin Heng's back as he helped him to his feet.

Their pace was slow, but what mattered was the steady support beside him. Bathed in sunlight, Lin Heng looked at Zong Que's profile. Walking this road together—he didn't have to face it alone. That was more than enough.

Not even a few days after the Brother Hai case was resolved, Zong Que received an official letter of recommendation from S University's Clinical Medicine program.

S University's medical school ranked among the nation's best. It was a rare honor—though the program itself spanned eight full years.

Eight years to produce top-tier talent, with multiple evaluations each year. If any one of them was failed, the student would be dismissed from the program. It was a path requiring immense dedication and perseverance.

There were only a handful of such offers in the entire country. Even Mother Lin, after reading the details, remarked in awe, "Isn't that basically taking the college entrance exam every single year?"

"They're training elite talent," Lin Heng replied calmly. "And medicine demands that kind of precision."

He never doubted Zong Que's ability.

Because this was someone who had already prepared for everything. All he ever needed—was the chance. And now that it had come, he would hold on tightly.

"You're right," Mother Lin smiled.

Though Zong Que didn't come from a well-off family, as long as he was willing to work hard, their future happiness was something they would forge with their own hands.

Lin Heng's leg healed quickly. By June, the cast was completely removed, and he could finally move around without assistance. But with his newfound freedom came a parade of tonics and nourishing soups.

Shrimp and tofu soup, pork bone broth, sparerib stew—those were tolerable. But when it came to things like longan and marrow bone, quail stewed with dragon bones, or tendon meat with white fungus—a strange mix of sweet and savory—just the sight of the food box made Lin Heng's face change.

"What is it today?" Lin Heng asked warily from his bed, instinctively leaning back when he saw Zong Que walk in carrying another soup container.

"Seaweed and chestnut stewed pork ribs," Zong Que replied, setting the container down and lifting the lid to reveal the various ingredients.

"Honestly, drinking soup every day feels like opening a blind box." Lin Heng forced a smile. "Life is full of surprises, huh. Can I skip it this time?"

That last part was the true heart of his plea.

"No." Zong Que scooped up a bowl of soup with some ingredients and handed it over. "It's a nourishing herbal broth. Good for your recovery."

Lin Heng took a deep breath and accepted the bowl, peering down at the strange mix of ingredients. Even after mentally bracing himself for several seconds, he still couldn't bring the spoon to his lips. He looked up at Zong Que, who had already taken a sip of his own bowl without batting an eye.

"Doesn't it taste awful to you?"

It felt like this guy didn't even have taste buds.

"It's alright," Zong Que said plainly.

The flavor was… odd. But still within the range of acceptability.

He downed it in just a few gulps, then glanced at Lin Heng's hesitant expression and asked, "Want something sweet afterward?"

"No. It's not medicine." Lin Heng leaned ever so slightly farther from the bowl.

"Then what do you want?" Zong Que asked.

Lin Heng looked at the earnest expression on his face and absentmindedly ran his thumb along the rim of the bowl. "Could you… feed me?"

The words had barely left his lips before Lin Heng's own face flushed crimson. "Forget it. I was just joking…"

He'd always been self-sufficient. Even as a kid, he'd never wanted to be spoon-fed. And now, out of nowhere, he'd made such a ridiculous request.

"I can." Zong Que put down his empty bowl and sat beside the bed.

Lin Heng's lashes fluttered as he looked up, watching Zong Que take the bowl and pick up a spoon. His fingers tightened slightly around the edge. "I'm not usually this fragile, you know."

"I know." Zong Que replied calmly, then gently brought the spoon to his lips, using the bowl to catch any spill.

He personally thought the best way to get through this odd-tasting stuff was to down it in one go, but if this was what Lin Heng wanted, he didn't mind.

Lin Heng opened his mouth and drank the spoonful. He couldn't even tell what it tasted like.

As long as Zong Que fed him, he would drink.

Warmth pooled in his stomach, slowly spreading through him like sunlight.

When Zong Que finally rose to his feet, Lin Heng blinked, pulled from his daze. "What's wrong?"

"Want more?" Zong Que asked, holding the now-empty bowl.

"N-no need." Lin Heng quickly turned his face toward the window, only then realizing how hot his cheeks had gotten.

While Zong Que tidied up the containers, Lin Heng couldn't bring himself to meet his gaze. Some things only made you regret them after you did them—not because they were truly wrong, but because they didn't feel like something you would do. Yet even then… he didn't really regret it.

A warm towel gently wiped the corner of his lips. Lin Heng looked back and met Zong Que's quiet, composed eyes. In that moment, a strange heat stirred in his heart.

If this person ever lost his composure… what would he look like?

"Zong Que," Lin Heng called softly.

"What?" Zong Que looked up—just as a hand landed lightly on his shoulder, and the boy leaned in, brushing warm lips softly against his.

So close their breath mingled, Zong Que didn't react, but he could feel the tremble in Lin Heng's breath.

It was a fleeting touch, like a dragonfly skimming the water. The moment their lips parted, Lin Heng bit his own lip gently and searched his face.

"Did you hate that?"

"No." Zong Que met the boy's gaze—nervous and alight with passion.

Kisses, in a purely physiological sense, transmitted a great deal of bacteria. He'd seen plenty of couples cling to each other like they couldn't breathe without it. He never really understood it.

But just now… the feeling had been strange. Not unpleasant.

"Then… what did it feel like?" Lin Heng's palms grew hot, heart pounding.

He tried to calm himself. He'd read somewhere that being too enthusiastic in a relationship might scare someone off. But he really, really liked this person. He wanted to be close… and yet was too afraid to reach out. That kiss—it wasn't enough. He wanted to draw even closer.

"It was too fast," Zong Que replied.

Lin Heng's eyes shimmered, caught off-guard by the answer. "Then… should we try again?"

"Mm." Zong Que wrapped an arm around his waist, the other hand cradling the nape of his neck. As Lin Heng's eyes widened, their lips met again.

It was still a soft kiss, but this time, Zong Que noticed the flutter of Lin Heng's tightly shut lashes, the blooming flush on his cheeks, the light tremble in his breath—and even the quickened pulse under his palm, just below the boy's ear.

Was this… the feeling of being in love?

As their lips parted, Lin Heng opened his eyes, breath a little shaky. In Zong Que's dark eyes, he saw a small, reflected version of himself. Even without looking too closely, he knew his own face must be burning.

He smiled, voice shy and tender enough to make himself blush. "Can you tell what it feels like now?"

"It's really soft…" Zong Que began, only for Lin Heng to hurriedly cover his mouth.

"Okay, that's enough. Don't say it," Lin Heng said, taking several deep breaths. He could feel the warmth even behind his eyes, but he couldn't stop himself from asking, "…Do you like it?"

Zong Que looked at his hopeful, slightly nervous expression and answered honestly, "Mm."

In that moment, joy bloomed inside Lin Heng—mixed with a flustered sort of helplessness. He opened his mouth to say something, but his thoughts were a complete mess. "Go wash the dishes."

"Mm." Zong Que released his hold on him, picked up the food containers, and left for the sink in the hallway.

He washed everything thoroughly so the cleaning lady could take them away the next day.

Once he stepped out, Lin Heng grabbed the edge of the blanket with one hand and touched his lips with the other. Then, in a burst of embarrassment, he yanked the blanket over his head.

From beneath it came a muffled, regretful voice. "No dignity at all…"

Truly, he had none. He'd always thought he was brave. Even when he saw couples kissing on the street, he'd only ever looked away politely. It never felt like a big deal.

But when it was him… why did it feel like even his heart wanted to leap out of his chest?

This was something only heaven, earth, and he himself could know. Not a soul else.

He firmly decided to keep it a secret—only to hear a voice from outside the blanket.

"Doesn't that make it hard to breathe?"

It was Zong Que.

Lin Heng's heart skipped a beat. "No."

"Your heart rate was elevated just now, and you were holding your breath. That increases oxygen demand. It's best to take the blanket off so you can breathe more easily," Zong Que said as he set down the containers, offering the reminder in his usual calm tone.

Lin Heng: "…"

If this man became a doctor, he'd probably never get away with pretending to be sick.

Well… meticulousness was a virtue. He'd just have to get used to it.
