Chapter 37
"I'll need to take the traitor back to the Mantegna clan, so I should be leaving soon. Can I entrust Lord Ange to you in the meantime?" Matthew asked, turning toward Amber, who was busy filling the tub with warm water.
"Yeah, thanks, Matthew. We'll rest here a little while longer. Once Ange has calmed down, we'll check out of this place."
"That sounds like a good idea," Matthew replied with a nod.
"I believe you've evaded the Mantegna pursuers for now, but if I don't return with you, Lord Lester may send others to find you."
"...I see…"
"Please understand, Lord Lester only does this out of concern for you."
"...I know."
—But even so... I can't go back now.
"Where will you go from here?"
"I'm heading north."
Amber's answer made Matthew's expression darken.
"If you're going north, I must urge you to avoid Northschist."
—Northschist, the northern capital.
It was said that, long ago, during the Lunatic Night, wolves would frequently attack humans in packs in that very city. Even now, tales of werewolf legends persisted, and the city was known for its brutal wolf hunts.
If Amber's identity were to be exposed in Northschist, he would not leave there unscathed.
Matthew reminded Amber of Lord Lester's deep concern about this.
"Don't worry. I won't be careless enough to let my secret slip. And besides, the stories about wolf hunts might just be rumors. Those old legends about werewolves attacking humans? That's ancient history. Surely, few people still believe in that."
Amber had a point. Werewolves had become nearly extinct, and no one had heard of any living in Northschist. Even wild wolves were a rare sight.
"But you must never underestimate humans. While a single person may not stand a chance against a werewolf, when united by belief and purpose, their strength is unimaginable. Just one consecrated silver bullet, and our lives could be lost."
"I know."
Amber understood all too well. He had been taught about these dangers again and again since childhood.
"But that's precisely why I think we can hide there in plain sight. Who would ever expect a werewolf to live right in the heart of a place like Northschist, a city supposedly dangerous for our kind?"
The plan had its logic. No one would think to search for them in such a perilous place. And even if the traitor would be punished, there was no guarantee that Mantegna wouldn't send more pursuers.
