Chapter 36

 

 

Amber's mind drifted to his brother, Ian—strong, compassionate Ian. If anyone could break the ancient, twisted traditions of their family, it would be him.

 

"But… what will happen to you, Matthew, if you don't take me back?" Amber's voice trembled with concern.

 

Ian's ascension to the head of the family was still far off in the future.

 

"Are you worried about me, Lord Aaron?" Matthew asked, a faint smile playing on his lips.

 

"…Of course I am."

 

"You don't need to worry. No matter what happens, I will always follow Lord Ian," Matthew replied confidently.

 

"Really…?"

 

Seeing Amber's troubled expression, Matthew couldn't help but chuckle softly, raising a hand to cover his mouth.

 

"Lord Aaron, I came all this way because I was concerned for you, and now you're the one worrying about me. If Lord Ian finds out, he'll be furious. It would be far worse than facing Lord Lester's wrath for not carrying out his orders."

 

With a soft apology, Matthew gently took Amber's hand and placed the envelope Ian had entrusted him with on it.

 

"Think about your life with Lord Ange first and foremost," he said, his voice tender but firm.

 

At those words, Amber's expression tightened with a newfound resolve.

 

"I understand. I'll use this money wisely, and when the time comes, tell my brother I'll repay him."

 

Seeing Amber's determination, Matthew smiled in relief, bowing deeply.

 

"As you wish. I will carry your words to him."

 

Raising his head, Matthew's gaze shifted toward Ange.

 

"It's important to think about the future, but for now, we must take care of Lord Ange. He should be taken to the bath."

 

"...Ah."

 

Amber turned, noticing Ange seated on the floor behind him, clutching the front of his disheveled shirt and trembling uncontrollably. His arms were wrapped tightly around his body, as if trying to shield himself, his face pale. The only color left on him was the dark, red swelling around his cheeks where the traitor had struck him.

 

"Ange, are you okay?"

 

Amber knelt before him, gently embracing him. Even through the shirt, he could feel the cold radiating from Ange's body.

 

"Are you cold?"

 

"Yeah... but I'm fine…"

 

Fearing that he might have a fever, Amber pressed a hand to his forehead. But instead of warmth, his skin was cold and clammy with sweat.

 

"His body must have cooled down quickly after being overheated by the fever of his heat cycle. Even though the sun is up, it's still chilly outside," Matthew explained calmly. "Run a bath for him and let him warm up. But be careful, don't use water that's too hot—it'll sting his wounds."

 

As he spoke, Matthew busied himself around the room, righting the fallen table and chairs, and tidying the bed sheets.

 

Though spring was nearing, the climate in this region was still bitterly cold in March, almost like the depths of winter. Just last night, snow had softly fallen. And to make matters worse, Amber and Ange were heading north.
