Family
When everyone had finally left, Xu Ran let out a long breath. Wrapping his arms around Liu Tong, he sighed, "Tongtong, I swear, arguing with them is more exhausting than working in the fields!"
It was broad daylight, and Liu Tong felt a little embarrassed as Xu Ran hugged him. Gently pushing him away, he said, "I just don't understand how Ah-mo and the others could be like this. Ah Ran, don't let it upset you."
But Xu Ran wasn't upset at all. It had been the fool who got hurt, and that fool was long dead now. All he felt for that family was disgust—no other emotion remained.
He nuzzled Liu Tong affectionately for a moment longer, then headed inside to check on Tangtang and Guoguo.
The two children had stayed inside the whole time, and Xu Ran had worried that they might have been frightened.
Sitting on the bed, Tangtang and Guoguo immediately jumped down and clung to his legs when they saw him. "Daddy!" they called out in unison.
The children were still afraid of Xu Ran's Ah-mo. In the past, he used to scold them all the time. They had thought that moving out would mean they wouldn't be scolded anymore, but to their dismay, he had come again.
Seeing their tired little faces, Xu Ran picked them up, one on each arm, and kissed their cheeks. "Tangtang, Guoguo, it's all over now. Don't be scared—Daddy's here. No one will ever bully you again."
"And they can't bully Daddy either!" Guoguo said firmly, balling his tiny fists in anger.
"Right! Bullying Ah-mo is also allowed to!" Tangtang added, nodding in agreement.
Hearing their words, Liu Tong, who had just entered the room, felt his heart melt.
He walked over and joined in the family hug, offering each other comfort.
Xu Ran had never encountered such difficult relatives in his past life, so he wasn't entirely sure how to deal with them. But one thing was clear: he couldn't afford to be soft. People take advantage of the kind-hearted. He had a husband and children now, and for their sake, he had to stand tall and live with dignity.
After calming down the little ones, Xu Ran turned to Liu Tong. "Tongtong, let's go pack the chili sauce today. Then you can take it to town and sell it. We need to save up quickly to buy that land."
"Alright! Tangtang, Guoguo, you two play by yourselves at home or go outside and gather some leaves to practice writing."
"Got it, Ah-mo!" Tangtang replied before pulling Guoguo outside with him.
Back when they lived with Xu Ran's family, they had started learning to write, taught by their Ah-mo. Although he didn't know much himself, he would always say that things would be better if their father wasn't a fool.
Since they couldn't afford paper for writing, they would gather large leaves from outside and grind up leftover charred stones to use as ink. By now, they were quite adept at it, as both Tangtang and Guoguo were determined to improve their writing.
Meanwhile, Xu Ran and Liu Tong uncovered the large jar of chili sauce. It was more than half full. "Tongtong, it's tricky to fill the bamboo segments directly. I'll go grab them, and you fetch the ladle and funnel. Let's fill twenty segments today."
"Alright." Liu Tong turned and went into the kitchen to get the tools, while Xu Ran retrieved the prepared bamboo containers. Each container had its own stopper, so they had to be careful not to mix them up.
They set up the funnel over the bamboo opening—one person holding it steady while the other ladled chili sauce from the jar and poured it into the funnel, letting the sauce slowly flow into the bamboo container.
This funnel had been made specifically for bottling the chili sauce, and it worked like a charm.
It took them half an hour to fill twenty bamboo containers. Once all were sealed and wiped clean, they placed them in a basket. Both of them couldn't help but smile with satisfaction.
"This is it, Tongtong! Success or failure will depend on this batch. Go borrow Brother Xu An's ox cart."
"Okay," Liu Tong agreed and left to borrow the cart from Wu Mei's family.
Xu Ran, holding the basket, waited at the door for Liu Tong to return.
