Chapter 36: The Sale
Liu Tong drove the ox cart to town, stopping at the usual spot—the restaurant owned by Manager Chen. Coincidentally, Manager Chen was there, and he greeted Liu Tong warmly. "Xu Ran's husband! You're here again. What have you brought me this time?"
In the past, Liu Tong had sold him game, often freshly caught or even alive. Some of the restaurant's patrons liked their food extra fresh, and since Liu Tong's goods were of the highest quality, Manager Chen always paid the best price for them.
With a smile, Xu Ran took his basket from the cart. "Manager Chen, this is something my husband made. It's called chili sauce, it can be eaten with rice or used as a seasoning for cooking. Please, give it a try."
Manager Chen took the bamboo container from Liu Tong and pulled out the stopper. Immediately, a fragrant aroma wafted through the air. "Wait here," he said, before heading off to fetch chopsticks.
Returning quickly with chopsticks and a small plate, Manager Chen scooped some of the sauce into the dish, then tasted it.
Nodding in approval, he said, "This is excellent! With this, my restaurant's dishes will be even easier to prepare. And I could sell it as a standalone product, too. How many of these do you have? I'll take them all. Name your price."
Liu Tong placed the entire basket on the counter. "There are twenty bamboo containers in total. As for the price, I'm not sure what's fair since this is the first time we're selling it."
"Do you have more of this at home? If so, I'll take everything. I'll give you one tael of silver for every two bamboo containers, but on one condition—moving forward, you'll sell this exclusively to me."
One tael of silver for two segments—that was quite a high price. But Liu Tong wasn't sure if Xu Ran would agree, so he hesitated and looked at Manager Chen. "I'll need to discuss it with my husband first. For today, just give me what you think is fair."
"Alright, go talk it over with him. For today's batch, I'll still pay you one tael of silver per two segments."
"Thank you, Manager Chen," Liu Tong said gratefully as he handed over the basket. Manager Chen counted out ten taels of silver and passed them to Liu Tong, who thanked him again and hurried out.
Ten taels of silver—it was the first time he'd ever held so much money, and the weight of it in his hands felt incredibly heavy.
Liu Tong rushed home, handed the silver to Xu Ran, and relayed Manager Chen's offer.
Hearing this, Xu Ran immediately understood what Manager Chen was aiming for—he wanted an exclusive deal. But that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. Xu Ran was just a farmer, with a family that was still struggling and vulnerable. Having someone like Manager Chen as a backer could be beneficial.
Xu Ran told Liu Tong, "Tongtong, tomorrow take the same amount again and tell Manager Chen I agree, but we have our own conditions. First, he can't tell anyone who's supplying him with the sauce, and second, he has to return the empty bamboo segments to us when they're used."
Liu Tong nodded. "Alright, I'll let him know." No matter the decision, he always trusted Xu Ran's judgment.
Xu Ran handed the ten taels of silver to Liu Tong. "From now on, you'll manage the household finances."
He was certainly living up to the modern ideal of a responsible husband handing over his paycheck.
Liu Tong, holding the heavy silver, bit his lip without saying a word. Deep in his heart, he silently called out Xu Ran's name.
Ah Ran... Ah Ran...
