Family Affairs

The moment Xu Ah-mo said those words, a tense silence fell over the crowd.

No one had expected him to be so heartless, openly wishing death upon his own son. What kind of mother thinks like that?

After the shock passed, the crowd began to murmur, discussing Xu Ah-mo's cruelty among themselves.

Though those were his true feelings, Xu Ah-mo had never meant to say them out loud, especially in front of so many people. The instant the words left his mouth, he knew he had made a grave mistake.

But what could he do now? The words were already out there, and far too many people had heard them. Hearing the growing whispers of the villagers, regret began to gnaw at him.

Xu Cheng realized things had gotten out of hand and hurried to explain, "Xu Ran, Ah-mo didn't mean that. He was just angry and said it without thinking."

Xu Cheng, lacking education and skill with words, only made things worse with his clumsy attempt at damage control.

Xu Ran didn't say anything; he didn't need to. Instead, he put on a look of deep sadness, silently playing his part for the onlookers.

Wu Mei, however, was boiling with rage after hearing Xu Ah-mo's vicious words. He put one hand on his hip and pointed the other at Xu Cheng and Xu Ah-mo. "Oh, so he gets angry and immediately wishes someone dead? If he gets even angrier, then what? Does he want Xu Ran's husband and children dead too? Xu Houcai's husband, you've got a heart of stone! There can't be many parents like you in this world!"

Xu Ah-mo was furious at Wu Mei's words but didn't dare fight back. He glanced at Xu Ran, who stood there with teary eyes, saying nothing. Unable to lash out at Wu Mei, he turned his wrath on him. "You ungrateful bastard! You stand there watching your Ah-mo get humiliated by outsiders and don't even say a word?"

Xu Ran completely ignored his outburst, his voice slow and indifferent. "But Ah-mo, didn't you just say you wanted me dead? How could I say anything that might upset you further?"

"You—you—you—!" Xu Ah-mo was so furious he could barely speak.

"The village chief is here!" someone suddenly shouted, and the crowd erupted again.

The village chief arrived with his ger by his side. Squeezing through the crowd, he looked at Xu Cheng and Xu Ah-mo with a deep frown, clearly displeased. "Xu Houcai's husband, what's the meaning of this commotion? I was present when you split the family, and you all agreed there'd be no more ties between you and Xu Ran. So why am I hearing that you're causing trouble for him now?"

"Village chief, how could you say I'm causing trouble? Xu Ran is my son. Our family can't handle the rice harvest on our own, so I asked him to come back and help. What's wrong with that? He's my son—am I not allowed to ask for his help?" Xu Ah-mo, true to form, didn't know his place, even when speaking to the village chief.

"Help with the harvest, you say? Xu Houcai's husband, you talk a good game, but have you given Xu Ran a single grain to eat? His family doesn't have a patch of land to their name, not a single coin to their fortune. Even the house they're living in was built by Xu An and a few others. As an elder, you should have a little dignity. Stop embarrassing yourself."

The village chief's ger was no pushover either. Seeing how disrespectful Xu Ah-mo had been toward his husband, he stepped forward to back him up.

At the same time, others in the crowd chimed in, "Xu Houcai's husband, show a little decency for the sake of your grandchildren!"

"Exactly, think of the children!"

Faced with the mounting disapproval of the villagers, Xu Ah-mo began to feel afraid. If the whole village thought like this, their family would be the subject of gossip for a long time. Fearing for his grandsons Xu Hui and Xu Qiang's future, he gritted his teeth and swallowed his pride, then pulled Xu Cheng away.

Xu Cheng, always one to bully the weak but cower before the strong, didn't dare say a word as they left.

Once they were gone, Xu Ran thanked everyone who had helped him, then invited the village chief, his ger, and Wu Mei into his house.

The last time the village chief had visited, the bamboo house had still been empty, with no furniture at all. Though it still wasn't much, they had since gathered a few belongings. It seemed life was slowly getting better for Xu Ran's family.

Liu Tong, who had cleared the dishes after the children finished eating, had stayed inside but had heard every word of what had transpired outside. When the troublemakers were gone, he rushed out to greet Xu Ran, finally relieved to see that he was unharmed.

Wu Mei teased him, "You sure do spoil him, don't you?"

Liu Tong just smiled, not saying a word, as he welcomed the village chief and his ger inside and poured them some water.
