Rebuttal
Just as Xu Ran was looking forward to enjoying some well-earned rest, trouble came knocking the very next morning.
The family was having breakfast, and Xu Ran planned to pack the chili sauce into the bamboo sections later that day—it had been fermenting for more than twenty days and should be just about ready.
However, before they could even finish their meal, someone started yelling outside for them to "get out."
Xu Ran instantly recognized the voice—it was Xu Ah-mo.
Ever since they had moved out of the Xu family home, Xu Ran hadn't paid any attention to their affairs. For one, he was too busy; for another, he simply didn't want to. Whether the Xu family thrived or withered had nothing to do with him. But today, it seemed they had come looking for trouble again.
Xu Ran still remembered the pain from the last time. He set down his bowl and said to Liu Tong, "Tongtong, you stay inside with Tangtang and Guoguo. I'll go see what's going on."
"Ah Ran, let me go with you! I'm worried about you going alone," Liu Tong said, his brows furrowed with concern. He clearly feared that the Xu family would cause trouble again.
Xu Ran patted his hand to reassure him. "Tongtong, don't worry. I'm not a Fool anymore. They can't touch me now. If I need your help, I'll call for you."
"Alright then, but be careful, Ah Ran." Despite his worries, Liu Tong knew that now that Xu Ran had recovered, he was the one who had to handle family matters. Otherwise, it would only give people something to gossip about. So, Liu Tong stayed behind as Xu Ran had asked.
When Xu Ran stepped outside, he saw a crowd had already gathered—things were certainly lively.
He opened the courtyard gate and looked at Xu Ah-mo and Xu Cheng standing outside. "Ah-mo, what brings you here so early?"
As soon as Xu Ah-mo saw Xu Ran, his anger flared up. He pointed a finger at him and said, "You ungrateful wretch! It's been so long since we split the family, and you haven't once come back to check on your father. Now that we're busy harvesting the rice, you don't even bother to come help. And you have the nerve to ask why I'm here? I've come to teach you, this unfilial son, a lesson!"
Xu Ran let out a cold laugh. "Ha! Ah-mo, have you forgotten that I was the one who was driven out? Back then, I hadn't yet recovered, and my husband had to carry a fool and two children, all while we were thrown out, bruised and battered, with nothing to our names. If not for the kindness of others, you'd be looking at our family's graves right now."
It had only been two months since the incident, and many of the onlookers had seen with their own eyes how Liu Tong had knelt down with the injured Xu Ran and the two children. Hearing Xu Ran's words now, they didn't show Xu Ah-mo any kindness in their expressions.
"Brother, that's not how it went," Xu Cheng hurriedly interjected, seeing that Xu Ah-mo was losing the argument. "We split the family back then, and now that we're overwhelmed with work, you're not busy. You don't have any land, so what's wrong with coming home to help out?"
Xu Ah-mo chimed in, following Xu Cheng's lead. "Your brother's right. You're willing to work for others but won't come home to help your own family. What are you thinking? I gave birth to you, raised you, and now you repay me by being a heartless ingrate."
"Ah-mo, out of respect for you as an elder, I'll keep my words in check. But even though I was a fool back then, I still remember the kind of life I lived in the Xu household. When we split the family, Father wanted to give us a small plot of land to grow vegetables, but you wouldn't even allow that. You were determined to starve us. Ah-mo, Tangtang and Guoguo are your grandchildren. They were only five years old then. How could you be so heartless?" As Xu Ran spoke, his eyes reddened with emotion, evoking both pity and sorrow.
"Xu Houcai's husband, you are truly shameless! Not only did your younger son steal his brother's ger, but now you want to starve your eldest son to death? I demand to know what kind of twisted heart you have! These two are your children—how can you treat Xu Ran so cruelly?" Wu Mei had heard about the commotion and couldn't sit still. Rushing over, he caught the tail end of Xu Ran's words and was furious. He was a tough, outspoken person, and now he couldn't hold back from confronting Xu Ah-mo.
Xu Cheng and Xu Ah-mo hadn't expected Wu Mei to show up. The matter of stealing his ger was a well-known fact, even though they had spun it as a matter of sparing the ger from hardship. But both Xu Cheng and Xu Ah-mo knew the truth, and they still felt guilty about it.
Seeing the onlookers start to whisper and point fingers, Xu Cheng stiffened his neck and retorted to Wu Mei, "What right do you have to interfere in our family's affairs? You're just an outsider—why are you sticking your nose in this?"
"Oh, you want to know why?" Wu Mei sneered. "Because if it hadn't been for me, Xu Ran's family would've starved to death by now. And you ask what right I have?"
"He deserved to die!" Xu Ah-mo suddenly burst out, the venom in his words stunning everyone around him.
