Trouble

After coming to this realization, Xu Ran's mood lightened, and he began chatting with Xu An.

When they arrived at Xu An's house, Xu Ran saw two children peeking out the door, eagerly watching the road. His heart instantly softened.

Jumping off the cart with a spring in his step, Xu Ran called out, "Tangtang, Guoguo, I'm back!"

As soon as Tangtang and Guoguo saw Xu Ran, they bolted toward him, throwing themselves into his arms. "Daddy! You're finally back! We've been waiting so long for you."

Tangtang, though more reserved, didn't speak but gazed at him with wide, expectant eyes.

Xu Ran kissed each child on the cheek before setting them down and going to help Xu An unload the cart.

Once the cart was unloaded, Xu An went to the fields to continue working, leaving Xu Ran alone with a bunch of rambunctious kids.

Xu Ran didn't plan to use the fatty pork for lunch, so he salted and stored it in a wooden basin in a cool room. After cleaning the intestines, he used them to extract oil, and then he stir-fried the residue with potato slices.

The pig's heart was also salted for preservation since they couldn't finish it all in one meal. The large bones were boiled into a hearty soup.

With no other ingredients, he boiled everything together with the potatoes, making a large pot. He figured it should be enough to feed everyone.

The delicious aroma soon drew the children over. Seeing there was plenty of soup, Xu Ran first served each of them a bowl so they could enjoy it right away.

Around noon, Xu Ran also prepared some boiled water with a pinch of salt. After such exhausting work, drinking salted water was good for replenishing strength.

To his surprise, his thoughtful gesture earned him a round of teasing.

When Liu Tong and the others returned for lunch and drank the salted water, Wu Mei chuckled, "Xu Ran, you're even more virtuous than the ger in the village. You've really taken over the kitchen!"

Xu Ran felt a wave of embarrassment wash over him. "Virtuous" wasn't a word he wanted to be associated with as a man.

As a proud man, Xu Ran refused to argue with Wu Mei, deciding to ignore his comment.

However, when they sat down for the meal, Xu Ran noticed several curious looks directed at him, even from Liu Tong. This made Xu Ran a bit angry. "If you all keep looking at me like that, I'm not cooking for you tomorrow!" he snapped.

"Oh no, Xu Ran! Your food is too good. We were just joking—don't be mad," Wu Lan quickly intervened, trying to smooth things over.

"Yes, Ah Ran, don't be upset. We were only teasing," Liu Tong chimed in, putting his chopsticks down to comfort him.

Xu Ran felt even more frustrated. The way they were looking at him was as if he were a ger—like comparing a man to a woman in modern terms. How could he tolerate that?

Yet, before he could voice his irritation, they all rushed to comfort him, making him feel as if he were being overly sensitive. It was quite vexing. Still, for Liu Tong's sake, he held back his anger. Turning to Liu Tong, Xu Ran explained, "Tongtong, I'm not angry. I just don't like being treated like a ger. I may know how to cook, but I'm still a man."

Afraid he would blow up again, Liu Tong quickly reassured him, "I know, I know. We won't do it again. Now, just enjoy your meal."

Only after hearing this did Xu Ran finally pick up his bowl and begin eating, not forgetting to serve Liu Tong some food as well.

Meanwhile, the children sat at a separate table, eating happily, completely unaffected by the adults' conversation.

...

Wu Mei's family had the most land, so harvesting their rice took seven or eight days. The other two families had much less land, so they finished in just five days. During this time, Xu Ran made the rounds to all three households, becoming thoroughly familiar with their salt jars and pigsties.

Once all the work was done, Xu Ran brought his family back home, where they collapsed into bed, falling into a deep, dreamless sleep. Exhaustion washed over them, as if the world itself had faded away.
