Friends

Once Liu Tong agreed, Wu Mei pulled Liu Qing outside. They planned to go to the village to gather some information about what happened, and also find a doctor to treat Xu Ran's injuries. Blood had been coming out of his mouth, and they were both worried about how severe the injury might be.

Wu Mei and Liu Qing had barely left the house when they saw someone running toward them in a hurry.

As the figure came closer, they recognized Wu Lan, Wu Mei's younger brother, also a ger. Like him, he had married into the Xu Village from their home in Wu Village. Wu Mei and Wu Lan had always been close, growing up together and later moving to Xu village together. Both had become good friends with Liu Tong.

"Xiao Lan, why are you running like that? Did something happen?" Wu Mei asked, supporting his panting brother.

"I... I heard... Liu Tong was driven out, so I rushed over..." Wu Lan said between breaths, his hands on his waist.

Wu Mei patted his back. "Don't worry, Liu Tong is at my house. He's fine."

After catching his breath, Wu Lan asked, "Brother, what happened? I went to town with Xu Zhen today, and when we came back, I heard Liu Tong had been kicked out. I panicked and ran to Xu Houcai's place, but couldn't find him there. I asked around and found out Liu Tong was at your place."

Wu Mei sighed. "We don't know all the details either. I only heard bits and pieces—seems Xu Houcai didn't give Xu Ran anything from the family property, just kicked the whole family of four out. I don't know how they'll manage from now on."

At Wu Mei's words, the three of them frowned. How could they survive with nothing, especially with a whole family to care for?

Liu Qing, feeling the same distress, spoke up. "We can figure that out tonight when we gather everyone. But for now, we need to find a doctor to check on Xu Ran's injuries. I'm also worried Liu Tong was beaten, though he hasn't said anything."

"What? Xu Ran was injured too? That heartless old man, Xu Houcai—how could he even lay hands on his own son? And Xu Ran's still not fully recovered. Has his conscience been eaten by dogs?" Wu Lan grew furious at hearing this, rolling up his sleeves, ready to storm off and settle the score.

Wu Mei quickly held him back. "Xiao Lan, don't be rash. This is their family business. If we get involved and things escalate, it'll just give people more reason to gossip. That'll only make things harder for Liu Tong and Xu Ran in the village."

Hearing his words, Wu Lan realized he had acted impulsively and immediately deflated. "But what do we do, Brother? We can't just let this slide."

"We'll figure it out when we get back. For now, let's focus on getting a doctor. After that, bring Xu Zhen and Xu Fa to my place so we can discuss this properly."

"Got it. You and Brother Qing go get the doctor; I'll head home and prepare some things for Liu Tong's family," Wu Lan said before rushing off again.

Watching his brother's hasty departure, Wu Mei couldn't help but laugh. "Honestly, even after getting married, he's still like that."

Liu Qing chuckled as well. "It's not a bad thing. You wouldn't want everyone to be as calm as you."

Wu Mei imagined what it would be like if Wu Lan were as composed as he was. "You're right. I'd probably find it unsettling."

Meanwhile, Liu Tong and Xu Ran ate quietly with their children. Dahu and Yueya'er had already finished their meal and were just watching as Tangtang and Guoguo ate. Afterward, they would join them to play. Liu Tong had invited Dahu and Yueya'er to join them for the meal, but the children politely declined, saying they weren't hungry.

Xu Ran admired how well-mannered these rural children were.

After the meal, Liu Tong started to clean up the dishes. The children went off to play outside. However, as Liu Tong reached up to clear the table, his shoulder, bruised and aching from the beating Xu Houcai had given him, throbbed with pain. Each movement was a struggle.

Noticing no one was around, Xu Ran quietly took the dishes from Liu Tong's hands. "Tongtong, let me do it. I know your shoulder hurts. Rest for a while, and we'll have the doctor check it for you later."

"It's fine. I'll take care of it. You're injured too, and washing a few dishes won't take long."

"No, your shoulder is hurting," Xu Ran insisted firmly.

Liu Tong, not wanting to argue over a few dishes, handed them over with a quiet nod.

But after he turned, he couldn't help worrying—could Xu Ran even wash dishes properly? After all, for the past seven or eight years, Xu Ran had been doing nothing due to his condition.

However, when Liu Tong glanced back, he saw Xu Ran carefully washing the dishes, and doing a surprisingly thorough job.

A smile tugged at the corners of Liu Tong's lips. This version of Xu Ran was truly wonderful.
