"Liu Tong, wait! Liu Tong!"
Just as Liu Tong took a step forward, he heard someone calling out behind him. He turned to see Wu Mei and Liu Qing hurrying toward him, breathless.
Liu Tong stopped and waited for them, offering a gentle reassurance, "Don't rush, I'm not leaving. Take your time."
After catching his breath, Wu Mei finally spoke, "Liu Tong, we heard you were driven out. You haven't found a place yet, right? Come stay with me for now."
"That's right," Liu Qing chimed in. "You've got a family to care for, and the kids are still so young. Xu Ran needs his medicine too. Come on, we won't let you go hungry."
Liu Tong hesitated, unsure.
Seeing his hesitation, Wu Mei pressed on, "Even if you don't think of yourself, you have to think of the children! You probably haven't even had lunch yet. Tangtang and Guoguo must be hungry. Whatever happens, come to my place for a meal first."
"Yes, and Xu Ran—look at all his injuries. He needs to see a doctor," Liu Qing added.
Liu Tong's heart ached as he looked at his two quiet, well-behaved children and his injured husband. It was his own failure that had left them so vulnerable, unable to protect even his own family.
He nodded gratefully toward Wu Mei and Liu Qing. "Thank you so much for your help."
Both of them waved off his thanks. "What are you talking about? If it were someone else, we wouldn't even get involved."
Liu Tong knew that Wu Mei and Liu Qing were only stepping in because of their close friendship with him. He would remember this favor, and in the future, he would do his best to repay their kindness.
Wu Mei's husband, Xu An, was a carpenter and a skilled farmer. With Wu Mei's capable and generous nature, their family lived comfortably and was well-respected in the village. Wu Mei had two children—a son, Dahu, and a ger child, Yueya'er—both of whom were well-behaved.
When they arrived at Wu Mei's home, he sent Dahu and Yueya'er to play with Tangtang and Guoguo while he seated Liu Tong and Xu Ran in the main hall. He busied himself in the kitchen, while Liu Qing returned to his own home to bring some food over.
Once they were alone, Xu Ran gently placed his hand on Liu Tong's, speaking softly, "Tongtong, I'm fine now. I won't let you suffer anymore."
Liu Tong froze for a moment, then his eyes filled with tears.
Xu Ran stood up, walked behind Liu Tong, and gently placed his hand on Liu Tong's back, carefully avoiding the wounded area from earlier, as he patted him soothingly. "Tongtong, I know it's been hard for you these past years."
Suddenly, Liu Tong stood up, red-eyed, and wrapped his arms around Xu Ran, calling his name over and over. "Ah Ran, Ah Ran…"
"I'm here, Tongtong. I'm here now. Everything will be fine…" Xu Ran continued to pat his back, comforting him in a gentle voice.
Liu Tong couldn't tell if he was crying out of sadness or joy. Ever since he had married into the Xu family, he had hoped for Xu Ran to recover. Year after year of hardship in the Xu family, he had clung to that hope. In his darkest moments, he would think, If only Ah Ran could get better, I wouldn't have to endure so much.
After waiting for seven long years, hearing Xu Ran suddenly say he was better, that they wouldn't have to suffer anymore, overwhelmed Liu Tong. He wanted to cry out all his frustrations from those years. He wouldn't have to bear the burden alone anymore—his husband, the father of his children, had finally come back to him.
But being in someone else's house, Liu Tong quickly regained his composure.
When he had calmed down, Xu Ran began to speak of his plans. "Tongtong, I came back to my senses two days ago. I remember everything from when I was a fool. I know what kind of life you've had to endure. It's all my fault, and I owe you and the children so much."
"No, you haven't wronged us," Liu Tong interrupted urgently, trying to reassure him. "Everything I did was because I wanted to."
Xu Ran smiled through the pain he had to endure. "Tongtong, don't worry. The past is behind us, and from now on, our family will be happy, and our days will only get better."
Liu Tong nodded firmly, fully believing his words.
"Listen to me," Xu Ran continued. "Ever since I regained my senses, I've been planning the family separation. Whether I was clear-headed or not, life in the Xu family would never have been good for us. It's better to live on our own. I'll explain everything in more detail tonight, but for now, when the doctor comes, make sure he checks my head and prescribes some medicine. After I take it, it'll look like I've naturally recovered."
"I understand," Liu Tong nodded, completely trusting him.
Just as Liu Tong was about to say more, Wu Mei came to call them for dinner.
They didn't speak further, standing up to follow him to the dining room.
When they arrived, their two children were already seated at the table, eating ravenously—they must have been very hungry.
Liu Tong and Xu Ran sat down, and to Liu Tong's surprise, the children were eating steamed egg custard. He didn't say anything, but silently took note of Wu Mei's kindness, storing it away in his heart.
Xu Ran, too, cast a thoughtful look at Wu Mei. He knew that eggs were a rare luxury in these times, with most families reluctant to eat them, preferring to sell them instead. Yet here was Wu Mei, generously offering them to the children.
Xu Ran made a mental note: once his situation improved, he would certainly find a way to repay his kindness.
Wu Mei and Liu Qing served them rice—it was coarse, but still decent—and there were three dishes on the table, even some meat. Liu Tong was deeply moved by their generosity. Even in his most difficult moments, there were still people willing to lend a helping hand.
He wanted to express his gratitude, but as the words reached his lips, he swallowed them back. Too many thanks would only create distance between friends.
As the meal went on, Wu Mei said, "Liu Tong, could you keep an eye on Dahu and Yueya'er? Liu Qing and I need to step out for a while."
"Of course, go ahead! I'll take good care of them."
