Departure
Liu Tong gazed coldly at the Xu family. There was nothing left in this house that he cared about. His family would leave with him, and from this day onward, they would have no more connection—neither in life nor death—with these people.
Supporting Xu Ran, Liu Tong led him to the door, with the two children silently following behind their fathers.
The Xu family watched Liu Tong warily, afraid he might take something from the house.
Liu Tong never kept anything important at home. He knew that no matter what was hidden in this house, it would eventually be found. He wasn't foolish.
When the Xu family saw them off, it wasn't with kind words, but with hoes and brooms in hand, as though they were driving out pests.
As they reached the door and opened it, they were met by a crowd of onlookers, eager for drama. After all, Tangtang and Guoguo had run to the village chief's house in tears, and many had witnessed them along the way.
It was the farming off-season, and villagers loved to watch domestic disputes. When they saw the village chief leave with a cold expression, they knew something had happened at Xu Houcai's house.
Xu Ah-mo stood in the doorway, hands on his hips, shouting, "What are you looking at? Never seen a family split before?"
With that, he pushed Liu Tong and the two children out and slammed the door shut, as if they were contagious.
Split the family!
The onlookers could see from Xu Ran's pitiful appearance that this wasn't just a family split—it was a case of someone being bullied and cast out.
Liu Tong glanced back at the closed door. He had spent seven years in this place. He had gained a simple-minded husband and two obedient children. For that, he felt grateful. At least his family was still together.
Just as Liu Tong was about to walk away, Xu Ran tugged at his sleeve. Liu Tong turned, confused. "Ah Ran, what is it?"
Xu Ran leaned close and whispered something into Liu Tong's ear, then began wincing and crying out in pain again.
Xu Ran had no intention of leaving quietly. He wanted the whole village to know how the Xu family had treated him, so that one day, if they ever became successful, no one from the Xu family could claim kinship to take advantage of them. Xu Ran was determined to ensure they remembered this—those who wrong others will face their own ruin.
Liu Tong understood. He helped Xu Ran, holding their two children's hands, and they all walked a few paces away from the door. Then, ignoring the crowd around them, Liu Tong knelt down. Xu Ran knelt beside him, and though the children didn't understand, they followed suit.
Once kneeling, Liu Tong began to cry. "Father, Ah-mo, now that the family is split, we can no longer stay to fulfill our duties as children. I thank you for raising Ah Ran. Rest assured, even though Ah Ran isn't as bright as he used to be, I will take good care of him and our two children. Even though you've given us nothing, I don't hold any grudges. I know how hard it's been for you, how much you love his younger brother and his children."
He then turned to Xu Cheng and his wife. "You two, please take good care of Father and Ah-mo. Don't let them want for anything. They're old now, and their bodies aren't as strong as they used to be. Don't make them work in the fields anymore. Make sure to call the doctor often, and buy them medicine to keep them healthy. Don't skimp on food either, especially meat. They should have at least one good meal every two days…"
Liu Tong was tall and strong, and his tearful plea wasn't exactly elegant, but his sincerity was unmistakable. The onlookers were moved, feeling that the Xu family had been cruel.
Even Xu Ran hadn't expected Liu Tong to say such words. He had always thought his husband was simple and easy to manipulate, but it seemed that when pushed to his limit, Liu Tong was capable of more than he'd ever shown.
While Xu Ran continued to cry out in pain, Liu Tong sobbed with his head down, and the two children began to cry as well. Together, they looked pitiful indeed.
The onlookers began to murmur among themselves. It was said to be a family split, but they hadn't received anything—not even a place to stay. It seemed they had truly been thrown out.
Xu Houcai's and Xu Cheng's reputations in the village had never been good. Now, having cast out the simple-minded brother, the villagers' opinion of the Xu family sank even lower.
After kneeling for a while, Liu Tong helped Xu Ran to his feet. As he stood, he looked around, his face filled with confusion. He had no idea where they would go now.
The whispers from the crowd grew louder, but Liu Tong and Xu Ran ignored them. The Xu family's door remained tightly shut, and inside, those people were secretly rejoicing. They had finally gotten rid of four freeloaders.
