The Family's Property

The village chief, observing Xu Houcai's demeanor, grew increasingly displeased. However, as this was a private family matter, he refrained from commenting further. Instead, he turned to Liu Tong, "Liu Tong, what about you?"

Liu Tong glanced at Xu Ran, disheveled and bleeding from his mouth and legs, still groaning in pain. "I'll leave everything to Father and Ah-mo. But, village chief, could I first take Ah Ran to see a doctor? I'm worried his injuries might be too severe."

"A doctor? What doctor? It'd be better if that useless eater just died. You're not going anywhere!" Xu Ah-mo interjected before Liu Tong could finish his sentence.

After being scolded, Liu Tong fell silent, lowering his head to look at the top of Xu Ran's head while gently rubbing his hand to comfort him.

Xu Ran could have endured the pain, but he didn't want to. He wanted the village chief to witness just how cruelly the Xu family treated him. So, he continued crying out in agony, refusing to let up.

The village chief watched Xu Ran's pitiful state, remembering that he was a fool and Xu Cheng's older brother. The cruelty of the family was indeed excessive, but as this was their own household matter, all he could do was act as a witness in his role as village chief.

Since Liu Tong had agreed, the village chief then turned to Xu Houcai, "As the head of the Xu family, what do you say about splitting the household?"

Xu Houcai, a farmer set in his ways, who had never received formal education, was inherently resistant to the idea of splitting up the family. His long-held beliefs made him reluctant to accept such a drastic change.

But before Xu Houcai could respond, Xu Ah-mo stepped in, "We'll split. This family must split."

Xu Houcai glanced at Xu Ah-mo and, saying nothing, silently agreed.

The village chief then asked Xu Cheng, "And after the family is split, with whom will your parents live?"

Xu Cheng confidently thumped his chest, "Of course, they'll live with us."

He wasn't foolish. If he let his parents live with his older brother, how much of the family's land would he be able to get? But if they stayed with him, not only would the land, but even the house would be his. His brother was just a simpleton—there was no way he was giving him the family's inheritance.

"Yes, we'll live with Chengzi*. We don't need to rely on that fool anymore," Xu Ah-mo eagerly backed his son's statement.

[T/N: The addition of "子" (zi) after a name often conveys familiarity or affection. In some contexts, using "子" reflects respect and warmth, especially when addressing younger males or close family members.]

Seeing that there was no turning back in the decision to split the family, the village chief, realizing he had no more role to play, coldly glanced at Xu Houcai before turning and leaving.

After the village chief left, Xu Houcai finally breathed a sigh of relief. If the chief had stayed, it would have made splitting the family much harder.

With the village chief gone, the Xu family began to discuss dividing the family's property.

Xu Houcai cast a cold glance at Xu Ran, who looked pitiful, and said, "We have three mu of farmland, three mu of dry land, and this house. The house will go to Xu Cheng, and we'll live here too. As for Da-ge*, you'll need to find another place to stay. There's no way we'll give you any of the farmland. As for the dry land, you can have that plot near the village entrance."

[T/N: Da-ge refers to the eldest son in a family.]

"No way! I don't agree!" Xu Ah-mo immediately cut in. "The land near the village entrance grows our vegetables. If we give that to them, what will we eat? Nothing! We won't give them a thing! That ungrateful child! After all we've done for him, he's never brought anything to his parents, and now he has the nerve to anger us? Let them leave with nothing but the clothes on their backs!"

Liu Tong remained silent, saying nothing. His grip on Xu Ran's hand tightened more and more until Xu Ran thought his bones might break.

Using his free hand, Xu Ran gently patted Liu Tong, signaling him to calm down. He then whispered softly into Liu Tong's ear, "Tongtong, we don't need their things. We can earn our own."

Xu Ran's movements were so subtle that the Xu family didn't even notice.

On the other side, after Xu Ah-mo's outburst, Xu Cheng chimed in, "Father, Ah-mo is right. Our family's vegetables come from that land. If we give it to Big Brother, not only will we have no vegetables to eat this year, but there will be nowhere to plant them in the future! Without food, how will we survive?"

"Exactly! Exactly! Father, Hui and Qiang are still growing. They eat a lot, and if they don't get enough food, how will they grow? You wouldn't want them to go hungry, would you?" Zhang Yue quickly followed Xu Cheng's words, and then encouraged their two sons to go act sweet with their grandfather.

On cue, Xu Hui and Xu Qiang rushed to Xu Houcai's side, clinging to his legs and calling out, "Grandpa!"

Xu Houcai looked down at his two affectionate grandsons, then glanced at Tangtang and Guoguo, standing silently in the corner, their heads hung low. His face filled with disdain.

"Fine. We won't give them anything. You can leave right now!"

"Yes, get out! Far away! It'd be best if you died out there!"

Both Xu Cheng and Xu Ran were born from the same mother, so why did Xu Ah-mo despise Xu Ran so much?

Xu Ran simply couldn't understand.
