The Doctor
After tidying up, Liu Tong and Xu Ran moved to Wu Mei's courtyard. Since their hosts were not home, they didn't feel comfortable staying inside, and with the children playing in the yard, it was the perfect opportunity to keep an eye on them and make sure they didn't get into any mischief.
Not long after, Wu Mei and Liu Qing returned, accompanied by the village's traveling doctor—Doctor Liu, a kind man from outside the village whom everyone simply called Liu Daifu*.
[T/N: The word "daifu" is used to address or refer to a doctor or physician. In this context, it's a respectful term used for someone who practices medicine and treats patients.]
Seeing Liu Tong and Xu Ran standing in the courtyard, Wu Mei frowned. "Liu Tong, why didn't you let Xu Ran rest inside? His leg was bitten, wasn't it? This is ridiculous."
Liu Tong smiled lightly. "It's nothing, just a few bites. The doctor can take a look at them, and he'll be fine."
By then, Liu Qing had already invited Doctor Liu into the house, and Liu Tong helped Xu Ran inside as well.
"Doctor Liu, please take a look at Ah Ran. He was slapped hard across the face, and he's been bleeding from the mouth. His leg was also bitten."
Doctor Liu had Xu Ran lie down on the bed and examined the injury inside his mouth. Mouth wounds were tricky—there was no quick fix, and it would have to heal on its own, as long as no infection set in.
As for his leg, Doctor Liu disinfected the bite marks with alcohol, applied medicine, and wrapped them in a clean white cloth.
"In this heat, if the wound isn't properly treated, it could worsen quickly," Doctor Liu warned. "Luckily, it's not too serious. He just needs rest."
Liu Tong seized the opportunity to ask, "Doctor Liu, Ah Ran seemed to be a bit more clear-headed recently. Could you check if the injury to his head has healed? Perhaps you could prescribe some medicine."
Everyone in the room brightened at Liu Tong's words. If Xu Ran was truly recovering, that would be a great cause for celebration!
Doctor Liu took Xu Ran's pulse and administered a few acupuncture needles before writing a prescription. "There is indeed some improvement. Let's see how he responds to this medicine. If all goes well, he should continue to recover."
Liu Tong's face lit up with joy.
After treating Xu Ran, Doctor Liu prepared to leave, but Xu Ran grabbed his sleeve.
Surprised, Doctor Liu looked at him. "Xu Fulang*, what is it?"
[T/N: 夫郎 (fūláng) is a term used in certain historical or fictional contexts, particularly in Chinese literature, to refer to a husband. The word combines 夫 (fū), meaning "husband," and 郎 (láng), which traditionally can mean "young man".]
Xu Ran pointed to Liu Tong. "Doctor, Tongtong… is in pain."
Liu Tong was momentarily stunned. He had nearly forgotten about his own shoulder injury. If Xu Ran hadn't mentioned it, he wouldn't have thought to treat it.
Liu Qing also realized. "Liu Tong, do you have an injury? If so, let Doctor Liu take a look. If you collapse, what will happen to your family?"
Recognizing the truth in his words, Liu Tong didn't refuse. "Doctor Liu, my shoulder was struck with a wooden stick. If you could just prescribe something to help with the bruising, that should be enough."
Since Liu Tong was a ger, Doctor Liu couldn't ask him to remove his clothing to examine the injury. Instead, he provided him with some ointment for the bruising and advised him.
"Don't do any heavy lifting for a while. Apply the ointment regularly, and if you need more, come see me until the pain subsides."
After giving his instructions, Doctor Liu packed his medicine box and prepared to leave. Being familiar with the village and hearing about Liu Tong and Xu Ran's situation, he didn't charge them for the treatment.
"Doctor Liu, can we owe you the medical fees for now and pay you later?" Liu Tong asked apologetically.
Doctor Liu waved him off. "There's no need. I understand your circumstances, so I won't take any payment this time."
"But that wouldn't be right. You've already helped us so much, and we can't expect you to cover the costs of the medicine yourself," Liu Tong insisted, visibly uneasy with the idea of not paying.
Doctor Liu didn't argue further and simply left.
Afterward, Wu Mei followed him out the door, saying he would escort him. At the gate, Wu Mei handed Doctor Liu a string of coins. "Doctor Liu, I'm paying for the medicine and consultation fee on Liu Tong's behalf. I know you meant well, but the medicine costs money, and it wouldn't be fair for you to cover it all yourself."
Doctor Liu hesitated for a moment, but then accepted the money. He knew that Liu Tong, despite living in Xu Family Village for seven years under such difficult circumstances, had never once asked for help no matter how hard it was. Understanding his pride, Doctor Liu decided it was better to accept the payment.
