Xu Ah-mo knew exactly what had happened but didn't offer any explanation. Instead, he allowed the rest of the family to heap insults on Liu Tong, who remained silent, quietly serving food to his two children without a word.
Xu Ran was furious. Though he hadn't developed deep feelings for Liu Tong yet, Liu Tong was such a kind person, and seeing him bullied right under his nose made Xu Ran's blood boil.
Xu Ran jumped up from the table, stormed into the kitchen, grabbed the freshly killed rabbit, and rushed back to the dining room. Without a word, he slammed the dead rabbit onto the table, sending food and dishes flying everywhere. Some of the soup even splashed onto the people seated at the table.
The room fell into a stunned silence. But once they recovered, the family erupted into a flurry of curses. "You brat! Are you asking to die today? I'll beat you to death!"
Xu Ah-pa, cursing all the while, grabbed a hoe from behind the door and swung it at Xu Ran.
Liu Tong quickly pulled the children aside and stood protectively in front of Xu Ran.
The hoe came down too fast for Xu Ran to react, and it struck Liu Tong squarely.
Even after the blow, Xu Ah-pa wasn't done and raised the hoe again for another swing. But this time, Xu Ran wasn't about to back down. After all, he was still considered a "fool" by everyone. He grabbed a stool and used it to block the hoe, pushing Liu Tong aside.
Liu Tong quickly regained his composure, darting around Xu Ah-pa to snatch the hoe from his hands.
With the hoe gone, Xu Ah-pa retaliated by aiming a slap at Liu Tong. Sensing danger, Xu Ran rushed in and shielded Liu Tong with his own body.
The slap landed hard on his face, leaving Xu Ran with a mouthful of blood.
Spitting the blood onto the floor, Xu Ran's action shocked the entire family into silence.
Xu Ah-pa, hand still raised, hesitated but eventually lowered it, glaring fiercely at Xu Ran and Liu Tong.
Meanwhile, Xu Ah-mo continued to rant in the background, while Zhang Yue and Xu Cheng added their own derisive comments.
Liu Tong pulled Xu Ran into his embrace, asking softly, "Ah Ran, what's wrong? Where are you hurt? Open your mouth and let me see."
Liu Tong spoke gently, wiping the blood from Xu Ran's lips.
In excruciating pain, Xu Ran could barely respond, merely whimpering softly.
No one in the household stepped forward to fetch a doctor to examine him.
The blow Liu Tong had received was heavy as well.
Xu Ran felt fortunate that his father hadn't gone so far as to kill him; if that hoe had struck down hard enough, Liu Tong might have been gravely injured.
Xu Ran was determined not to let this incident slide.
Originally, he had been thinking of waiting until Liu Tong had everything ready before bringing up the matter of splitting from the family. After all, leaving with nothing to your name takes a lot of courage, and the whole family still needed to eat.
But plans often fell apart, and this family was capable of severe violence over a mere rabbit.
His Ah-mo, fully aware of the situation, didn't step in to explain. What kind of family behaved like this?
Xu Ran believed that if the "fool" were to be aware of things, he would feel the same. Life could not continue like this.
Leaning into Liu Tong's embrace, Xu Ran whispered into Liu Tong's ear, his voice barely audible, "Tongtong, have the two kids go get the village chief."
Liu Tong paused in surprise at Xu Ran's words but said nothing. He didn't know when Ah Ran had regained his senses, but he was relieved that he had.
Liu Tong beckoned to Tangtang and Guoguo, who were both frightened but held back their tears, remaining silent.
With Xu Ran leaning on him, Liu Tong bent down to the two children, instructing gently, "Tangtang, Guoguo, go to the village chief's house and bring him here, okay?"
The children had been to the village chief's home before, so they knew the way.
Tangtang and Guoguo nodded obediently. Liu Tong affectionately ruffled their hair, offering a warm smile.
As they left, the two children were teary-eyed, but no sound escaped their lips.
The Xu family didn't think much of it, assuming the children were simply being sent away to avoid getting caught in the crossfire. While they despised Liu Tong and Xu Ran, who they saw as useless, the children still bore the Xu surname. After all, giving them a meal now would ensure they could contribute later, to do some work around the house.
