They had barely sat down when both children called out in unison, "Wu Ah-mo!"

 

Xu Ran looked up and saw a middle-aged ger walking towards them.

 

Thanks to the memories of the "fool," Xu Ran could now clearly distinguish between gers and xiaozis*.

 

[T/N: 小子 (xiǎozi) refers to boys or younger males, and in this case, those who couldn't get pregnant, as opposed to gers.]

 

Wu Ah-mo, as the children called him, was one of Liu Tong's few friends in Xu family's village. His name was Wu Mei.

 

Xu Ran simply smiled at Wu Mei without greeting him, figuring that the "fool" wouldn't have known him anyway.

 

Wu Mei, however, after hearing the children's calls, came over immediately. He fished two pieces of candy from his pocket and handed them to the children, then offered a third one to Xu Ran.

 

The children politely thanked him, while Xu Ran, holding the identical candy in his hand, looked a bit bewildered.

 

Noticing his awkwardness, Wu Mei smiled and said, "Take it! It's just a piece of candy."

 

Xu Ran hesitated before thanking him. He then clutched the candy tightly in his hand, thinking about giving it to Tongtong when they returned.

 

Wu Mei had just come back from the fields and needed to prepare the meal for his family, so he didn't stay long and left without saying anything further.

 

After Wu Mei left, Xu Ran led the two children back home. As it happened, Liu Tong had already returned and, finding their room empty, was just about to go out to look for them.

 

When they reached the door, they saw Liu Tong glancing around anxiously. Xu Ran quickened his pace with the children.

 

"Tongtong!"

 

"Ah-mo!"

 

"Ah-mo!"

 

The three of them called out in unison, one adult and two children.

 

Liu Tong visibly relaxed upon seeing them. He rushed over to inspect the three of them, anxiously asking if they had been bullied or if they had any injuries.

 

Seeing that their father had no intention of explaining, the two children eagerly told Ah-mo what they had done the whole day. At the same time, they held out the candies they had carefully saved, showing them to Liu Tong. Seeing this, Xu Ran also mimicked their gesture, opening his hand to reveal his candy to Liu Tong.

 

Liu Tong's heart warmed at the sight. For these few people he cared about, all his efforts felt worthwhile.

 

He walked over to Guoguo and took his hand, leading the family back inside.

 

As soon as they entered, Xu Ah-mo unleashed a torrent of scolding, "A bunch of good-for-nothings! Where have you all been loitering all morning? It's already noon, and no one's bothered to make lunch! If you like wandering so much, why don't you just go die outside?"

 

Xu Ran glanced at Xu Ah-mo but didn't respond. Instead, he turned to Liu Tong and said, "Tongtong… for lunch… no meat, no meat…"

 

Liu Tong also cast a look at Xu Ah-mo, who was still ranting, and understood that Xu Ran was upset and didn't want to share the game he'd brought back with Xu Ah-mo. Smiling indulgently, he said, "Alright, we'll do as Ah Ran says."

 

The children were also displeased by the scolding, but they were used to it by now and didn't care much.

 

Guoguo let go of Liu Tong's hand and, together with Tangtang, took Xu Ran by the hand, leading him to their room.

 

Liu Tong then headed to the kitchen, setting aside the half-dead rabbit he had caught, deciding not to prepare it for lunch.

 

Xu Ah-mo continued to curse at length, but when no one paid him any mind, he spat on the ground and followed Liu Tong into the kitchen. Upon seeing what Liu Tong was doing, he began berating him again.

 

Liu Tong ignored him, letting the man rant as much as he pleased.

 

Seeing Liu Tong's indifference, Xu Ah-mo unleashed even harsher words, accusing him of being unfilial and irresponsible, while trying to grab the rabbit for himself.

 

Liu Tong, who was tending the fire, turned around and said, "Ah-mo, we just had meat yesterday. Let's save this rabbit for dinner."

 

The Xu family lived a hard life, with only a few opportunities to eat meat throughout the year, all of which came from Liu Tong's hunting. They didn't even have a pig to raise.

 

Although Xu Ah-mo kept cursing, he no longer fixated on the rabbit.

 

When Liu Tong brought the rabbit home, everyone in the family had seen it. But when they realized there was no rabbit on the table at lunch, Xu Cheng, along with Xu Ah-pa, began pounding the table, accusing Liu Tong of secretly eating the rabbit by himself.
