Going Out

The next morning, Liu Tong woke up early. He remembered what Xu Ran had said and planned to head up the mountain to chop bamboo and hunt some game to sell.

Since Xu Ran refused to take his medicine for now, Liu Tong thought it best to save more money first, then buy the medicine later. Once they moved out, no one would be able to control them anymore.

After making breakfast, Liu Tong ate by himself, then prepared portions for Xu Ran and the two children. He brought the food into their room to ensure there would still be something left for them when they woke up.

He didn't wake the children but leaned over Xu Ran's bedside to tell him he was going out and would return by noon.

Xu Ran, still half-asleep, didn't pay much attention.

By the time he woke fully, the sun was already high in the sky, and the heat was what had finally roused him.

After getting up, he noticed that the two children had already dressed themselves and were washing their faces in a small wooden basin.

Stretching lazily, Xu Ran walked over to the children. "Good morning, Tangtang, Guoguo! You've done such a good job dressing yourselves."

"Daddy!" The two children called out in unison.

Tangtang, being thoughtful, handed Xu Ran a damp cloth. "Daddy, wash your face."

They weren't from a wealthy family and didn't fuss over formalities, so Xu Ran took the cloth, wiped his face, and then washed the children's faces once more.

Both children beamed with happiness, their laughter filling the room.

"Gurgle, gurgle…"

Xu Ran's stomach growled audibly, causing his face to flush with embarrassment. It was humiliating to be so hungry in front of the children…

"Daddy, Ah-mo saved breakfast for us. It's in the house. Let's go eat!" Instead of teasing him, the children took his hand and led him inside.

Breakfast was a simple porridge made from coarse grains, with no side dishes at all. Fortunately, Liu Tong had left a large bowl of it, and even drinking the porridge alone was enough to fill their bellies.

Afterward, Xu Ran fetched some water from the well, and Tangtang and Guoguo washed the dishes and returned them to the kitchen.

With no chores left to do, they found themselves idle.

No one else was home—not even Zhang Yue—and Xu Ran was rather relieved. After all, it was better not to see the people he didn't want to deal with; it saved him from irritation.

Since two five-year-olds and a "fool" couldn't do much work, Xu Ran decided to explore the area and get a better sense of its surroundings. His memory of the outside world was frozen at the time before the original host had lost his wits, so he wasn't entirely sure what the current situation was. He wanted to see if he could find a suitable place to build a house.

He asked the children for their opinions, and both Tangtang and Guoguo readily agreed to follow whatever Daddy decided.

As they set out, Tangtang walked ahead, while Guoguo stayed close to Xu Ran, his small hand firmly clasped in Xu Ran's larger one.

In that moment, Xu Ran suddenly understood why Tangtang's injuries were often more severe than Guoguo's. Despite being born only minutes apart, he had instinctively placed Guoguo in the role of the weaker one, always trying to protect him.

Reaching out, Xu Ran gently pulled Tangtang to his side, smiling as he said, "Let's walk together."

Tangtang seemed a bit puzzled but obediently followed his father's lead, not letting go of his hand.

The two children were well-behaved and attractive, and Liu Tong had raised them to be polite. Whenever they encountered someone they knew, they greeted them warmly. The villagers of Xu family's village were fond of the children and, seeing Xu Ran with them, no one mentioned that he was a "fool." Xu Ran remained silent, simply smiling at everyone they passed. He wasn't bad-looking, and his smile left a good impression on others.

Relying on his memories, Xu Ran visited several places, but most of the empty land from before now had houses built on it. Only the land at the far end of the village remained untouched—a desolate stretch.

Xu Ran decided that this was the perfect spot. It was far from the Xu family's home, and there weren't many people around, making it an ideal place to live without being disturbed.

The two children followed him around, quietly observing. Though they didn't know exactly what Xu Ran was up to, they didn't complain once. It wasn't until much later that Xu Ran noticed both children looked pale and were practically being dragged along, their legs lacking strength.

Feeling guilty, Xu Ran said, "Tangtang, Guoguo, I'm sorry. Daddy didn't notice that you were tired."

The brothers shook their heads in unison. "It's okay, Daddy. We'll feel better after resting a bit."

Guoguo nodded vigorously. "Yes, just a little rest."

"Alright, let's rest for a while." Xu Ran led the children to a clean stone on the roadside, where they all sat down.
