That evening, there wasn't even a grain of rice to be seen at dinner, let alone any meat. The dishes were all made of wild vegetables.

 

As Xu Ran ate his cornbread, he kept adding vegetables to his children's plates. Wild greens or not, having something to eat was better than nothing.

 

Ah-mo and Zhang Yue noticed Xu Ran's actions and scolded him once again. Xu Ran remained unfazed—his only concern was that the children were fed. As for himself, well, being a "fool," he didn't understand their words anyway.

 

In the countryside, dinners were eaten early, and there wasn't much entertainment in the evenings. To save oil for the lamps, people usually went to bed right after their meal.

 

After washing the two children and tucking them into bed, Liu Tong turned his attention to bathing Xu Ran.

 

Since marrying Xu Ran, it had always been Liu Tong who bathed him, but that was when Xu Ran was a fool. Now that Xu Ran was a different person, he was naturally unwilling, refusing no matter how much Liu Tong coaxed him.

Though the tight embrace was unfamiliar and slightly uncomfortable, Xu Ran didn't resist.

 

Liu Tong patted his back gently, whispering in his ear, trying to lull him to sleep. But sleep was far from Xu Ran's mind. He couldn't rest until he spoke the words weighing on his heart.

 

So, he tugged at Liu Tong's collar. "Tongtong…"

 

"What's wrong, Ah Ran? Tongtong is here," Liu Tong responded tenderly.

 

"I want bamboo… lots and lots of bamboo."

 

Liu Tong was puzzled. "Bamboo? Alright, I'll go chop some for you tomorrow. But what does Ah Ran need bamboo for?"

 

"No, no… bring it back… hide it where no one… can find it…" Xu Ran's tone grew agitated as he spoke.

 

Seeing his distress, Liu Tong immediately calmed him down. "Alright, alright! I won't bring it back. But what does Ah Ran want the bamboo for?"

 

"A house… don't like… Ah-mo… want to live with Tongtong…" Xu Ran stammered, imitating the foolish speech of the original host. After speaking, he felt more exhausted than if he'd fought a battle.

 

Liu Tong understood. Xu Ran didn't like his Ah-mo and wanted to move out.

 

Liu Tong began to think carefully. Perhaps Ah Ran's plan was feasible. He wasn't sure how much longer this family would tolerate them, so it was better to start preparing now.

 

"No… no more medicine… Tongtong, don't buy... save… money…" Xu Ran, feeling overwhelmingly tired, finally closed his eyes and fell asleep.

 

As Liu Tong continued to ponder, Xu Ran spoke again, even in his sleep. He said he didn't want to drink the medicine anymore and wanted to save their money.

 

Just as Liu Tong was about to ask how Xu Ran knew about his savings, he glanced down and saw that Xu Ran had already fallen asleep.

 

Gently patting Xu Ran's back, Liu Tong whispered softly in his ear, "Ah Ran, don't worry. I'll save money and cure you. You and the children will have a good life. Don't worry…" With those words, Liu Tong closed his eyes and drifted off as well.

 

That night, everyone harbored their own thoughts.
