Chapter 48
After finishing the laundry for his elder brother, Hai Zhu noticed that Hai Shi had left the shop and hadn't returned for quite some time. Worried that something had happened, he hurried over to Hai Zan to ask about his whereabouts. Upon learning that Hai Shi was in an alley beside the shop, he immediately went to look for him.
As soon as he arrived, he spotted Hai Shi seemingly speaking to a young ger. There was something oddly familiar about the person, but he couldn't quite place them. Frowning slightly, he asked, "Who is that?"
Hearing Hai Zhu's voice, Hai Shi turned his head and sure enough, it was him. He glanced awkwardly at Tang Ling before replying, "Zhu-ger, what brings you here?"
"I came looking for you since you hadn't returned." Hai Zhu walked toward him as he spoke, his gaze wary as it settled on Tang Ling.
Tang Ling had been about to slap Hai Shi, but Hai Zhu's sudden appearance threw him off. Seeing the way Hai Zhu was eyeing him so defensively, his temper flared again. Then, recalling the way Hai Shi had been ogling him earlier, he decided to teach Hai Zhu a lesson.
With a sly smirk, he grabbed Hai Shi's arm and clung to it intimately, then pointed at Hai Zhu and playfully asked, "Brother Hai, who is this?"
Of course, he didn't actually know Hai Shi at all. He had only just overheard Hai Zhu calling him "Brother Hai" and decided to follow suit.
Hai Shi, caught off guard by Tang Ling's sudden embrace, was momentarily elated—until Hai Zhu's voice rang out, thick with barely contained fury. "Hai Shi, who is he?" Gone was the respectful address of "Brother Hai."
His moment of bliss shattered instantly. Remembering that he was still living under Hai Zhu's roof, he knew he couldn't afford to anger him. Hastily, he tried to pry Tang Ling's hands off.
But Tang Ling was no gentle soul. The moment he noticed Hai Shi attempting to break free, he tightened his grip and coldly declared, "Today, you can only choose one—either him or me!"
Hai Zhu, upon hearing this, shot Hai Shi an expectant glance, waiting to see what he would decide.
Hai Shi, misinterpreting the situation, assumed that Tang Ling had fallen for him after his earlier act of heroism—leading away the two servants to help him escape. If that were the case, then he had already won Tang Ling's heart! With the support of the governor's ger son, how could he possibly worry about finding a place to stay?
Having reached his conclusion, Hai Shi made up his mind.
Turning to Hai Zhu, he sneered, "Zhu-ger, I don't like you. I choose him."
Tang Ling smirked triumphantly—he had expected nothing less.
Hai Zhu's eyes reddened at those words, but he said nothing. Without another word, he turned and walked away.
Once Hai Zhu was gone, Tang Ling immediately shoved Hai Shi's arm away, casting a look of utter disdain at him. Without sparing him another glance, he turned on his heels, ready to leave. He had had enough of this place. All he wanted now was to go home, soak in a hot bath, and cleanse himself of the bad luck clinging to him.
Ever since his father had confined him, he had been starved of freedom—an unbearable punishment for someone as restless as him. Today, he had snuck out in secret, but he hadn't expected his father to notice his absence so quickly and send his guards after him.
Seeing that Tang Ling was leaving, Hai Shi hurried after him.
"Get lost! Why are you following me?" Tang Ling snapped, his temper flaring.
"Ling-ger, I truly like you! You saw it just now—I chose you! Of course, I have to follow you home," Hai Shi declared earnestly.
"Pah! Chose me? I don't recall ever telling you my name. How do you know it?" Tang Ling suddenly narrowed his eyes. "Oh, I see now. You must have recognized my identity and want to use me to curry favor with my father, huh? Hah, let me tell you—this trick won't work!"
"No, no! It's not like that, Ling-ger! I truly like you!" Hai Shi hurriedly explained.
"Hah! Plenty of people like me. Who do you think you are?" Tang Ling scoffed, pointing to the side. "Scram!"
But Hai Shi paid no heed to his words, stubbornly clinging to him. He had finally found an opportunity—how could he give up so easily just because of a few harsh words?
Just as Tang Ling was about to lose his patience, the guards who had gone searching for him earlier happened to return. They immediately spotted the very man who had tricked them earlier, now pestering their young master. Their anger boiled over, and without hesitation, they rushed forward and gave Hai Shi a thorough beating, leaving him bruised and swollen.
Only after seeing Hai Shi lying battered on the ground did the fire in Tang Ling's chest finally subside. Satisfied, he turned and left with his guards.
That evening, as Wu Bai and Xiao Zimo rode their carriage back to the village, they spotted Hai Zhu standing alone by the city gate, waiting for them.
Hai Zhu climbed into the carriage, and Wu Bai asked, "Zhu-ger, where's Hai Shi?"
"Dead," Hai Zhu replied curtly.
"What?! Dead? How did he die?" Wu Bai was utterly shocked.
Even Xiao Zimo's expression flickered with surprise.
Hai Zhu did not elaborate further, and Wu Bai chose not to press him. From the way Hai Zhu looked, something must have happened. He decided to wait until Hai Zhu was in a better state before asking again.
And so, the three of them returned to the village.
In the days that followed, Wu Bai never saw Hai Zhu again—nor Hai Shi. Though Hai Zhu had said that Hai Shi was dead, Wu Bai couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't quite right. But regardless of what had truly happened, Hai Shi was no longer his concern, nor Father Wu's. At the very least, he no longer had to worry about Hai Shi bringing disaster upon them.
One day, as Wu Bai was heading out to bring food to his family, he unexpectedly spotted Hai Shi again. The man was limping, following behind Hai Zhu as they made their way toward the seaside.
Hai Zhu ignored him entirely, while Hai Shi trailed behind, speaking to him.
"Hai Zhu, I was wrong. Please forgive me!"
"I swear, I'll never abandon you for someone else again."
"I promise everything I say now is true."
"I truly like you…" Hai Shi continued pleading.
Hai Zhu paid no attention to his words, but for some reason, that last sentence ignited his fury. He turned around and kicked Hai Shi.
Hai Shi, desperate for Hai Zhu's forgiveness, took the kick without resistance. Already injured and limping, the impact only made his steps more unsteady, and before long, he fell behind. But he knew exactly where Hai Zhu was heading, so he wasn't worried about losing sight of him.
Neither of them looked back, so neither noticed Wu Bai following from a distance.
Wu Bai's emotions were complicated as he watched Hai Shi. He hadn't expected the man to show up in Haining Village again—like a ghost refusing to rest.
At the shore, Hai Zhu handed the food he brought to his father, then found a shaded spot to sit and wait for him to finish eating so he could take the dishes back home.
While he waited, Hai Shi limped over and stood beside him, once again pleading for forgiveness.
The others nearby noticed and turned to Father Hai, asking, "Old Hai, did Hai Zhu and Hai Shi have a fight?"
Father Hai rubbed his head and sighed helplessly. "Yes. I have no idea what's going on between them. Hai Shi hasn't been back for days, and I don't even know where he's been staying. I asked Hai Zhu, but he won't say."
"Haha, young people! Always bickering. That just means their bond will be stronger in the future!" an older man joked.
Father Hai neither agreed nor disagreed, simply lowering his head and continuing to eat.
Not far away, Wu Bai handed over the food basket to his own family before sitting down to wait for them to finish. Since he had been eating at home with Xiao Zimo recently, he hadn't packed a portion for himself.
Originally, Xiao Zimo was supposed to come with him, but just as they were leaving, one of Xiao Zimo's subordinates came with urgent business, so he had left temporarily. That left Wu Bai alone to deliver the food.
Wu Bai watched as Hai Shi continued to pester Hai Zhu, while Hai Zhu looked visibly irritated.
Deciding to step in, Wu Bai walked over and said, "Hai Zhu, I need to talk to you about something. Let's go over there." He gestured toward a shaded rock nearby.
Hai Zhu glanced at Wu Bai, nodded, and stood up to follow him.
However, just as they started walking away, Hai Shi shamelessly tried to follow.
At his wit's end, Hai Zhu snapped, "Can you stop following me?! I don't want to see you ever again!"
His voice was so loud that everyone at the shore heard him, turning their heads to watch.
Brother Wu, worried that his younger brother and Hai Zhu—both gers—might be bullied by Hai Shi, immediately stepped forward, placing himself in front of them and facing Hai Shi.
"What do you think you're doing?" he demanded.
Brother Wu had grown up by the sea—tanned, broad-shouldered, and towering in stature. Compared to him, Hai Shi's wiry frame was no match. Not to mention, Hai Shi had recently been beaten up by the Tang family's servants, and his injuries hadn't fully healed. Facing Brother Wu now, he dared not pick a fight. Instead, he forced a laugh.
"Brother Wu, you misunderstand. There was a small misunderstanding between me and Zhu-ger, and I just want to clear things up with him."
"There's no misunderstanding," Hai Zhu cut in coldly. "And I don't want to hear your explanation."
"Did you hear that?" Brother Wu said, his voice calm but firm. "Zhu-ger doesn't want to hear it. So why don't you take a hike?"
Hai Shi, unwilling to give up, hastily tried to explain, "Brother Wu, you don't understand. Zhu-ger is just upset right now. Once he cools down, he'll listen. I swear, I won't do anything to him—I just want to talk."
Hai Zhu turned to Brother Wu, his expression pleading. "Big Brother Wu, I'm perfectly calm. I just don't want to hear another word from this person. Can you do me a favor and get rid of him?"
Hai Zhu and Wu Bai had grown up together, and Hai Zhu had always called Brother Wu 'big brother' just like Wu Bai did. A small request like this—of course, Brother Wu wouldn't refuse.
Without a second thought, he grabbed Hai Shi by the collar and effortlessly hauled him away, tossing him down onto the rocks a short distance away.
With a dull thud, Hai Shi landed hard against the reef. Already injured, the impact sent pain surging through his body, and he let out a miserable cry.
Brother Wu heard his yelp and smirked slightly, though he quickly wiped the expression from his face. Casually dusting off his hands, he returned to Wu Bai and Hai Zhu.
"Alright, you two can talk now. Don't worry—I'll keep an eye on him. He won't come bothering you again."
Wu Bai grinned. "Brother, you're the best. Now go eat—your food's getting cold."
"Mm, alright. I got it."
Brother Wu nodded, then went back to his spot beside Father Wu, picking up his bowl and chopsticks once more. But his sharp gaze still flickered toward Hai Shi from time to time.
