Chapter 47
Inside the study, Tang Maode's face was a mask of fury as he stared at Tang Ling. "Just what in heaven's name is going on here?"
Seeing his father's anger, Tang Ling remained nonchalant. He waved a hand dismissively and said, "Father, you don't know how much work I've put in these past two days. You wouldn't believe what I uncovered! That steward of yours and your new concubine? Both spies! Fortunately, I was sharp enough to see through them and capture them before they could do any real damage."
Tang Maode felt his head throbbing. With a deep sigh, he asked, "And what about the trenches you've dug all over the manor? What was that for?"
At this, Tang Ling perked up with pride. "Ah! That was my stroke of brilliance. I've heard that spies are a cunning lot—they love digging tunnels in households to smuggle out information. So, I had the entire estate excavated to prevent such a thing from happening. Father, trust me. Under my watch, the Governor's Manor will be impenetrable! No spy will get the better of us!"
As he finished speaking, he pulled another stack of papers from his robes and handed them to Tang Maode.
Tang Maode took them and glanced through, realizing they were written confessions from the steward and the concubine, both admitting to being spies.
The steward had been with Tang Maode for over twenty years. If he were truly a spy, wouldn't Tang Maode have known? Rage surged through him as he slammed the papers onto the wooden desk with a loud thud.
However, Tang Ling thought his father was furious because of the steward's betrayal and immediately fumed with righteous indignation. "Father, that steward is utterly despicable! You treated him so well, entrusting him with all the household affairs for years, yet this is how he repays you? If I hadn't thought to leave him for you to deal with personally, I would have already had him—"
The more Tang Ling spoke, the more agitated he became, completely oblivious to the fact that Tang Maode's temple veins were throbbing with rage.
"Enough! Shut your mouth!" Tang Maode roared.
"Guards, take him away and confine him to his courtyard. He is not to leave without my permission!" Tang Maode ordered, barely restraining his anger.
With that, he turned away, not daring to look at Tang Ling any longer—lest he lose control and slap this foolish ger to death.
Hearing that his father was confining him, Tang Ling was in complete disbelief. Hadn't he just accomplished a great feat and captured the spies?
As he saw his father's men approach to take him away, Tang Ling hastily shouted, "Father!"
Turning to the approaching guards, he threatened, "Stay back! If you dare touch me, I'll have Father behead you all!"
Upon hearing this, the two men hesitated. After all, in Yangjiang Province, everyone knew how much Governor Tang doted on his youngest ger.
Seeing them pause, Tang Ling took the opportunity to move past them, making his way to the desk before confronting Tang Maode. "Father, what are you doing?!"
"Hmph! You still dare to ask? Who gave you the right to beat my steward into that state?" Tang Maode huffed coldly.
He thought that after stating his reason, Tang Ling would realize his mistake. However, instead of an apology, he was met with Tang Ling's sharp retort, "I see! It's not about the steward at all! It's that fox spirit, isn't it? He must have gone crying to you! Hmph! I should have beaten him to death from the start—no, I'll go do it now!"
As soon as he finished speaking, Tang Ling turned and stormed off, his face filled with rage. He was now convinced that his father had been bewitched by that concubine, which was why he was being punished.
Tang Maode was momentarily stunned before quickly coming to his senses and roaring, "Stop him at once!"
"Yes, sir!" The two guards immediately blocked Tang Ling's path.
"I knew it! You're confining me all because of that fox spirit!" Tang Ling exclaimed, seething with anger.
Seeing his son like this, Tang Maode realized that no matter what he said, Tang Ling would never understand. Feeling drained, he weakly waved his hand. "Take him away. He is not to leave his courtyard without my permission."
After a pause, he added, "Give him whatever he needs… Now go."

Haining Village
Wu Bai and Xiao Zimo were sitting in a carriage, preparing to leave the village. Today, they were going to check on the injured Yin Yun and Hai Zan.
Just as they were about to set off, they were stopped once again—this time by Hai Zhu.
Ever since Wu Bai had informed Hai Zhu that his elder brother was injured, Hai Zhu had been deeply worried. That's why he had been waiting at the village entrance since early morning, hoping to hitch a ride with them.
Wu Bai glanced at Hai Zhu and nodded in agreement.
Xiao Zimo handed the reins to Hai Shi, who stood behind Hai Zhu, before following Wu Bai into the carriage. Seeing this, Hai Zhu said nothing and simply climbed into the carriage after them.
Outside, Hai Shi's expression darkened for a moment. With a stiff face, he climbed onto the driver's seat and urged the horse forward.
Upon arriving at the shop's backyard where Hai Zan was recuperating, Hai Zhu rushed inside the moment he got off the carriage. Seeing his elder brother sitting in the courtyard, he anxiously called out, "Big Brother, how are you?"
Hai Zan looked up and, upon seeing his younger brother, immediately smiled. "Zhu-ger, what brings you here?"
"I heard from Bai-ger that you were injured, so I came to see you. Look, I brought you some eggs!" Hai Zhu lifted the basket of eggs in his hands.
"I'm fine, just a minor wound. It's nothing serious—I'll be fully recovered in a couple of days," Hai Zan reassured him.
Wu Bai and Xiao Zimo examined Hai Zan and noticed that he indeed seemed to be in good spirits, his complexion looking healthy. They both felt reassured.
"Brother Zan, didn't Yun-ger come here today?" Wu Bai asked.
Hai Zan shook his head. "No, he got injured too this time and is recovering at home."
After checking in on Hai Zan and leaving behind the supplies they had brought, Wu Bai and Xiao Zimo departed.
Outside the shop, they climbed back into the carriage and set off towards the Yin family home—there was still Yin Yun to visit.
After they left, Hai Zhu and Hai Shi remained at the shop for the time being. While Hai Shi chatted with Hai Zan, Hai Zhu went inside, gathered up Hai Zan's clothes, and fetched some water to wash them. Since Hai Zan had injured his arm, he hadn't been able to do laundry, and the accumulated pile had grown quite large. With Hai Zhu's help, he finally felt some relief.
Meanwhile, Hai Shi and Hai Zan sat drinking tea as they talked. The journey had been long, and since Hai Shi had been the one driving the carriage, he was both exhausted and parched.
After drinking several cups, he suddenly felt the need to relieve himself and asked Hai Zan for directions.
The shop was in a prime location, with heavy foot traffic coming and going. Behind it were two rooms for the shop assistants, a storage room, and a kitchen—but no private latrine. The only option was a communal latrine a short distance away, just around the corner. That was the place Hai Zan directed him to.
Following Hai Zan's instructions, Hai Shi quickly found the latrine and took care of his business.
Satisfied, he stepped out of the latrine and was about to leave the alley when someone crashed into him. He was just about to curse when he looked down and found himself staring at the very person who had been on his mind for so long.
The young man before him looked panicked, his cheeks flushed, sweat beading at his temples. Hai Shi instinctively glanced into the distance and, sure enough, saw several men dressed like servants running in pursuit. His heart stirred, and he quickly said, "Don't panic—come with me, I'll help you shake them off."
Tang Ling had been about to lash out at the man blocking his way when he heard him offer to help escape the pursuing servants. He swallowed back his anger, nodded, and followed him.
Hai Shi led Tang Ling straight back into the latrine he had just left.
The stench inside was overwhelming. Tang Ling nearly gagged, but Hai Shi, on the other hand, was elated. Here he was, alone with his beloved, and in a situation where he had just performed a heroic rescue—how perfect! At that moment, he felt as if Tang Ling's wide, tear-brimmed eyes were brimming with admiration for him.
Tang Ling had never been in a place this foul in his entire life. He nearly vomited, but since he hadn't eaten breakfast that morning, there was nothing to throw up. He held his breath desperately, his face turning red, his eyes watering uncontrollably from the stench. Glaring daggers at Hai Shi, he swore to himself that one day, he would chop this bastard into pieces—how dare he bring him to such a wretched place!
Just as Tang Ling was about to storm out, unable to bear it any longer, he heard voices right outside the latrine curtain. Instantly, he froze.
"Where did Young Master run off to? He's fast as hell!" one of the servants grumbled.
"Hey, there's a latrine here—could he be hiding inside?" another suggested, stepping forward.
Just as his hand was about to lift the curtain, the servant next to him smacked him on the head. "Are you stupid? Why would Young Master hide in a place like this? Even I wouldn't step inside—it reeks to high heaven! Let's go check somewhere else."
Hearing that, the first servant hesitated, then withdrew his hand.
Tang Ling, finally able to breathe again, exhaled in relief—only to be immediately overwhelmed by the stench again, making him retch violently.
The servants outside stopped in their tracks. "Did you hear that? I think there's someone inside. We should check it out!"
"Yeah, let's go."
Tang Ling panicked at once.
Hai Shi quickly reached out and patted his hand, whispering, "Don't worry, I'll handle it."
Then, just as the servants reached for the curtain, Hai Shi lifted it himself and strode out.
The moment Hai Shi left, Tang Ling stared at his own hand—the one Hai Shi had just touched—and immediately pulled out a handkerchief, scrubbing at it furiously until his skin turned red. Only then did he angrily throw the cloth to the ground.
The two servants glanced at Hai Shi, and a look of realization flashed in their eyes. Ah, it was just someone else—not the young master.
Still, they asked, "Young sir, is there anyone else inside? Perhaps a young ger?"
"No one. Just me. Oh, wait—now that I've stepped out, there's no one inside at all," Hai Shi replied with a straight face.
Satisfied with his answer, the servants didn't press further. Without even bothering to check for themselves, they hurried off, figuring the young master must have fled even farther by now.
As soon as the two disappeared from the alleyway, Tang Ling couldn't hold it in any longer. He threw the curtain aside and stormed out, seething with rage.
He had every intention of slapping that shameless rogue Hai Shi for touching his hand, but just as he raised his arm, a voice interrupted him from behind.
"Brother Hai, who were you talking to just now?"
