Chapter 46
In the blink of an eye, Xiao Zimo had only enough time to yank Wu Bai behind him before delivering a powerful kick to the oncoming assailant—a man wielding a blade. As a trusted confidant of the emperor and a man of noble birth, Xiao Zimo had received combat training since childhood. Within moments, he had the attacker pinned to the ground.
Wu Bai was safe, but Yin Yun was not so fortunate. A slash had grazed his arm, and now he stood behind Hai Zan, both of them slowly retreating as another armed man advanced toward them.
The other visitors in the courtyard had fled in panic the moment they saw the knives and the attackers' menacing expressions.
Yin Yue had fallen to the ground, unmoving—his condition unknown.
The knife-wielding man closed in on Hai Zan and Yin Yun. Desperate, Yin Yun tried to divert his attention. "Who are you?" he demanded. "Why are you trying to kill us?"
The man advancing toward Yin Yun and Hai Zan sneered at the question, not pausing for even a moment. Instead, he raised his blade high and lunged toward them once more.
A sharp tearing sound cut through the air—Hai Zan had lifted his left arm to block the strike. Enduring the pain, he grasped the assailant's wrist with his right hand, tightening his grip around the hilt of the dagger.
The man attempted to yank the weapon free twice, but when he failed, he abandoned the effort. Instead, he gripped the hilt firmly with both hands and shoved the blade forward with all his strength.
Hai Zan hadn't anticipated this move. His defense faltered for an instant, and the blade plunged deeper into his arm.
The two men stood locked in a deadlock, both gripping the weapon between them.
Wu Bai, seeing this, quietly picked up a stone from the ground. He crept behind the man threatening Yin Yun and Hai Zan, and while the attacker was still unaware, he brought the rock down hard. Unfortunately, his height and strength were somewhat lacking, and instead of striking the man's head, the blow landed on the back of his neck.
The man winced in pain and instinctively turned to see Wu Bai standing there, still holding the stone. In an instant, he understood what had happened.
Abandoning his knife, he redirected his focus, preparing to charge at Wu Bai instead. After all, Wu Bai was just a ger—he figured he didn't even need a weapon to subdue him.
However, the moment he loosened his grip and turned away, Hai Zan—who had been pushing back with all his might—suddenly lost resistance. The blade in his hands plunged straight into the man's back.
The attacker opened his mouth, but before he could utter a word, blood gushed forth. He collapsed to the ground, lifeless.
On the other side, Xiao Zimo had already knocked his own opponent unconscious. He rushed over to Wu Bai, grabbing him and inspecting him carefully. Only after confirming that Wu Bai was unharmed did he finally exhale in relief.
Wu Bai smiled lightly and said, "I'm fine, Brother Xiao. You're not hurt anywhere, are you?"
Xiao Zimo shook his head. "No."
Then, turning his attention to Hai Zan, he asked, "What about you two?"
Hai Zan gritted his teeth and clutched his injured arm, trying to suppress the pain. "I'm fine, but the young master is hurt. We need to find a physician right away."
Earlier, Yin Yun had been standing behind Hai Zan, so Wu Bai hadn't noticed his injury. Now, hearing this, he grew anxious and hurried to support Yin Yun. "Yun-ger, where are you hurt?"
"What? The young master is injured?!" Yin Yue, who had just regained consciousness, overheard the conversation and, alarmed, scrambled up to ask.
"I'm fine. It's just a cut on my arm. But Hai Zan's wound is much worse," Yin Yun reassured. "Yin Yue, hurry and tend to his injuries."
Yin Yue pulled out a handkerchief, preparing to bandage Yin Yun first. However, upon hearing the order, he hesitated. "Young master, let me take care of you first. Then I'll tend to him."
"Do as I say. Take care of Brother Hai first." Yin Yun's tone was firm.
"…Alright." Yin Yue reluctantly complied.
Hai Zan quickly interjected, "No need! I'm thick-skinned, I'll be fine without bandages."
Yin Yun shot a sharp glance at Yin Yue, who was still dawdling. "Yin Yue!"
Yin Yue finally stopped hesitating and hurried to tend to Hai Zan's wounds.
Meanwhile, Wu Bai took out a handkerchief from his robe and carefully wrapped Yin Yun's injury himself.
Once the wounds were bandaged, Wu Bai glanced at the two unconscious men on the ground and turned to Xiao Zimo. "Brother Xiao, what do we do next?"
Xiao Zimo pondered briefly before instructing, "The three of you should leave and find a physician to treat your wounds. I'll stay behind with Bai-ger to handle these two."
Yin Yun considered it for a moment before nodding in agreement.
After Yin Yun, Hai Zan, and Yin Yue departed, Xiao Zimo retrieved a small whistle from his robes and blew it. Moments later, two men clad in black appeared, kneeling before him. "Lord Xiao, what are your orders?"
These two were imperial guards assigned by the emperor to protect Xiao Zimo. After establishing contact with his own subordinates earlier, Xiao Zimo had also summoned them. They typically remained nearby, ready to appear the moment he called.
"The two men on the ground are yours to deal with," Xiao Zimo instructed. "One is still alive—get whatever information you can out of him. Find out who sent them and why they attacked us."
He suspected that his presence in Yangjiang Province had been exposed, prompting Tang Maode to send assassins after him.
After issuing his orders, Xiao Zimo left the courtyard with Wu Bai.
When they arrived at the spot where their carriage was parked, they were surprised to see that Yin Yun and the others had not left.
"Why are you still here?" Wu Bai asked.
"We were worried about you," Yin Yun admitted. "So we waited to return together."
"Then let's hurry back to the city," Wu Bai said. "Your wounds can't afford any further delay." With that, he stepped into the carriage.
Seeing his resolve, Yin Yun swallowed his questions about how they had handled the two assassins.
They soon arrived back in the city and sought a physician to tend to their wounds.
None of them noticed that, in a teahouse across from the medical clinic, someone had just smashed a teacup in anger.
"I'm absolutely furious! Those two fools couldn't even handle such a small group of people!" A young ger dressed in blue glared at the clinic across the street, his face contorted with rage.
"Young master, please calm down," his servant soothed. "Those men were mere villagers, not trained assassins. Their failure was inevitable."
But the blue-clad ger only grew more enraged. He slammed his palm onto the table. "Am I truly powerless against Yin Yun? Must I spend my life beneath his heel? Why?! I refuse to accept this!"
Behind him, the servant rolled his eyes discreetly and muttered inwardly: You're the precious son of the governor. You hold unchecked power in Yangjiang Province. If you so much as point at the stars, people will scramble to pluck them for you. Who dares to step on you?
After venting his frustrations, the young master's fury subsided slightly. Seizing the opportunity, the servant tentatively suggested, "Young master, why not seek your father's help again? Perhaps he can find another way to deal with Yin Yun."
"No," the ger, Tang Ling, rejected the idea outright. "Father already took a risk when he ordered men to douse the Yin family's textile workshop in fire oil. That plan was exposed and reported to the magistrate. Fortunately, the magistrate is on good terms with Father and helped cover it up. When Father returned, he warned me to behave and lay low. He recently received news from the capital that…" Tang Ling trailed off, his expression darkening.
"News of what?" the servant asked absentmindedly.
Tang Ling's eyes narrowed in suspicion. "Why are you asking?"
The servant froze.
Seeing his hesitation, Tang Ling grew more wary. His father had warned him that an investigator from the capital had been sent to Yangjiang Province to probe into the long-standing case of the Grand Princess's consort being slain by pirates. He had been told to watch his words carefully, lest someone trick information out of him.
Now, hearing his servant prying into his father's affairs, Tang Ling's suspicions flared. Was this servant a spy?
When Tang Ling returned home, he immediately ordered the servant to be captured and interrogated.
Tang Maode, upon hearing about the incident, felt an unexpected sense of relief. At last, his son was learning some caution. He was no longer the reckless child who blindly trusted others. In fact, he had even begun to help his father deal with matters proactively.
Tang Ling had grown up by his father's side, witnessing the various interrogation techniques used in the naval barracks. When he applied these methods to the captured servant, it didn't take long before he obtained a thick stack of confessions.
Triumphant, he carried the documents straight to his father's study. Without even bothering to knock, he strode right in.
Hearing the door open, Tang Maode sighed and rubbed his temples. Sure enough, it was Tang Ling. He smiled wryly and asked, "Ling-ger, what brings you here?"
Tang Ling held up the stack of confessions as if presenting a prized treasure. With a smug tilt of his chin, he said proudly, "Father, look at the fine gift I've brought you."
Tang Maode took the documents and skimmed through them. They contained written confessions detailing the servant's crimes—an admission that he had indeed been sent by someone else to spy on him.
"As expected of my Ling-ger," Tang Maode praised with satisfaction. "You've done well, handling this so swiftly." He knew perfectly well that the servant was not actually a spy—but what did it matter? As long as his son was happy, that was enough.
"Of course! I was raised under your teachings, Father. Dealing with traitors like this is child's play. Rest assured, I'll root out every single spy in this household. No one will be able to pry into your affairs. Even if that official from the capital arrives to investigate you, it won't be a problem. I will make sure they leave empty-handed!" Tang Ling declared, his face full of self-importance.
"Very well, very well. Then I'll leave the household in your capable hands," Tang Maode said with an indulgent nod.
He had recently received word that the official dispatched from the capital would be arriving by ship in a few days. He had been planning to negotiate with the sea bandits about the best place to make the official 'disappear.' Now, hearing that Tang Ling intended to stay home and focus on weeding out spies instead of causing trouble outside, he gladly agreed.
At that moment, however, Tang Maode had no idea that under this pretense, Tang Ling would turn the entire Governor's Manor upside down. By the time he returned from his affairs, his trusted steward was half-dead from a beating, his newly taken concubine had been tormented beyond recognition, and his once-imposing estate had been reduced to a chaotic mess of dug-up pits and trenches.
