Part 3: Northschist
Chapter 49
By the early morning, before dawn broke, they had left the motel.
Amber gripped the steering wheel as their car headed north. Snow, which had started falling around midnight, danced in the car's headlights, lightly covering the asphalt and the trees lining the road in a delicate blanket of white.
"Ange, are you feeling okay?" Amber asked, his voice soft with concern.
"Yeah…" Ange replied, half-asleep in the passenger seat.
It was only the third day since Ange's first heat had begun, and Omega heats typically lasted a full week. Now that they were bonded, Ange would only go into heat for Amber, but his body still felt constantly feverish. The only time he could truly rest was when he was asleep.
"Go ahead and sleep," Amber urged gently.
"But… you haven't slept much either," Ange replied, his voice drowsy.
"I'm fine. I'm younger, remember?" Amber teased.
"We're only a year apart…" Ange mumbled, his lips curving as his eyelids grew heavy.
In truth, Ange had entertained the thought of holing up in that cheap motel for the entire duration of his heat, indulging in the reckless desire that surged through him.
But being close to Amber like this, he feared that his body might betray him again, responding without his consent. And if his heat returned, Amber too would be affected, possibly transforming in his heightened excitement.
What if someone saw them while they were out in public?
The thought sent a shiver of fear through Ange. Perhaps it would be better if he stayed asleep as long as possible.
Without opening his eyes, Ange rested his hand gently over his abdomen. He could still feel the lingering warmth Amber had left inside him, and that warmth filled him with a deep, contented happiness.
As long as he felt this sense of fulfillment, maybe the storm-like intensity of his heat wouldn't return. That was his hope, at least.
If only this happiness could last forever.
Though Amber reassured him that everything would be fine, Ange couldn't help but feel a flicker of doubt as they traveled north. He recalled Matthew's ominous mention of "werewolf hunters," and a wave of unease settled in his chest. For the first time in his life, Ange found himself genuinely worried about someone else more than himself. Amber had become more precious to him than anything, more vital than even his own existence.
—Is this what it means to become family?
The word "family" drifted lazily through his mind, filling his heart with a gentle warmth. There was no clear form to it yet, but the thought of it wrapped him in a soft, comforting embrace.
As Ange succumbed to the rhythmic sway of the car, lulled by that warmth, he slipped into a deep, peaceful sleep.
