Chapter 52: Belonging (2)
"Yue, that's not a responsible thing to ask of someone, not in the human world," Zong Que replied. "I refuse."
"Then who will you give your body to?" Yue's voice chilled, the glint in his eyes like frost. If he had to watch Zong Que take another human as a mate… he would rather drag him into the sea.
"There won't be anyone else," Zong Que answered calmly—and just like that, the cold edge in Yue's gaze faded.
"Then why not?" Yue asked, confused.
"Because clinging to something like that will only trap you in the past," Zong Que said. "And keep you from moving forward."
"Merfolk only have one mate in their lives," Yue murmured with a sigh. "Even to the end of our days, we won't be able to move on. Your body can't go into the sea… but can't you give me your heart?"
His eyes were filled with unwavering devotion. A merman who had chosen his mate—once returned to the sea—would still swim alone, always and only alone.
Zong Que lowered his gaze, then suddenly cupped the back of Yue's neck and kissed him.
This person… was it truly his heart this soul longed for?
Even if he couldn't give his heart, his mind would remember this soul, more faithfully than any heart could.
Their kiss, deep and unhurried, unfolded against the wall bathed in moonlight. When they finally parted, both were breathless.
"You kiss well," Yue murmured, eyes glimmering with light. He leaned in and kissed Zong Que's waist gently. "But leave the rest… to me."
"Sorry," Zong Que said, lowering his head and brushing a kiss across Yue's lips—then caught him off guard by pressing a pressure point just below his navel.
Yue's strength gave out almost instantly. His eyes widened in disbelief. "You…"
"Yue, if I'm the one on top… would you still want this?" Zong Que asked, holding him in his arms.
Yue's throat bobbed with a swallow. Then his lips curved into a faint smile. "At a time like this…"
"Good," Zong Que murmured, pressing a kiss to his eyes as he carried him back into the bedroom.
The waves surged and crashed outside—the tide was full, and so was the heart.
…
A glimmering fishtail curled off the edge of the bed. In the warm, amber light, Yue pinched Zong Que's cheek and said, "You humans are bolder than I thought."
Zong Que slowly opened his eyes and pulled Yue close by the waist. "You let your guard down around humans."
"I only let my guard down around you." Yue's lips brushed his with a soft smile. "But since you made me feel good… I'll forgive you. Just barely."
"Mm." Zong Que closed his eyes again.
They had tangled most of the night. His internal clock needed time to recalibrate.
"You look exhausted," Yue said, his tail swaying with energy. Even the marks on his arms were fading, his skin returning to its usual delicate smoothness.
"Humans need sleep at night," Zong Que replied.
"But I'm not tired." Yue leaned over him with a mischievous smile. "So now you sleep well."
Zong Que opened his eyes, watching the eager glow on the merman's face. "You should show some restraint."
"Only once isn't nearly enough," Yue murmured. "If you're too tired, I can take care of things myself. You just rest."
1314, catching the keywords, suddenly darted out of its little black room and cheerfully suggested: [Host, would you like a kidney tonic? One pill, rock hard all night! Seven times isn't just a dream! It's a bestseller among hosts!]
[No need. Thank you.] Zong Que replied.
[Okay, but if you ever need it, don't be shy!] 1314 said enthusiastically.
[You know the saying—there's no bad farmland, only tired oxen. A man must never say he can't perform. Even if he really can't, he still has to keep up appearances in front of his wife.]
[Quiet.] Zong Que ordered.
1314 instantly went silent, as obedient as a chick. After all, it had heard that many hosts were shy at first—but with the varying strength of worlds, there were always situations where the tonic proved useful.
As long as a host had a partner, the kidney tonic would always find its moment to shine.
"I understand," Zong Que murmured, his eyes falling on the merman glittering like a gem under the shifting lamplight.
"Human stamina does have its limits," Yue said with a soft chuckle. His tail, which had spilled like flowing silk from the edge of the bed, slowly retracted. But in the next moment, Zong Que covered his eyes and kissed him deeply again.
"Hey—!"
"You said only once, so now I'll hold you to that."
…
Dawn broke gently as Zong Que stepped out of the research facility, carrying the merman in his arms, and brought him to the sea.
"Aren't you worried I'll be seen?" Yue asked from the comfort of his embrace. Though his body bore no marks, there was an unmistakable satisfaction in his features.
"I turned off all the surveillance," Zong Que replied, lowering him into the sea.
The water, cool to humans, felt soothing to a merman.
He floated atop the waves, radiant as the rising sun.
"Will we see each other again?" Yue asked, grasping Zong Que's hand.
"If everything goes well… I might return here," Zong Que answered, holding his hand in return.
A smile bloomed in Yue's eyes. "Is that what you humans call responsibility?"
"Perhaps," Zong Que said. "Until things are settled, I can't make promises. I can only try my best."
Shedding his clothes before Yue carried a different weight now—one of meaning.
"That sounded a little scummy," Yue teased with a laugh, "But I believe you meant it."
"Do you have anything that could help me contact you?" Zong Que asked.
"A token? We're bonded. The moment you return to the shore, I'll sense you." Yue tilted his head and smiled. "But since you gave me such a beautiful gift, I'll give you one too."
He looked toward his tail, about to pluck off a scale when Zong Que reached out and gently stopped him.
"No need," he said.
Yue lifted his eyes to meet his, then chuckled softly and withdrew his hand. "You're afraid it'll hurt me?"
"Don't harm your body," Zong Que said. "There's no need."
"Alright." Yue looked at the ornament around his arm, removed the arm-ring, and placed it in Zong Que's palm. "This is my favorite decoration. I'm giving it to you."
"Thank you," Zong Que replied. "Yue, goodbye."
"We will meet again." Yue leaned in and kissed his lips lightly, then turned with a smile and slipped into the deep sea.
Waves splashed, silver light flickered—and then, silence.
Zong Que cradled the arm-ring as he returned. At this hour, the institute should still have been quiet, but as he reached the entrance, he ran into Luo Xin, who had just come out rubbing his eyes.
"Whoa, Doc! Where'd you get that? Looks expensive—an antique?" Luo Xin stared at the arm-ring, eyes wide with amazement, all sleep forgotten.
"Found it by the shore," Zong Que said.
Luo Xin blinked. "Doctor, seriously, how many treasures have you found by the sea?"
Was it really true that the early bird got the worm?
"Quite a few." Zong Que opened the door to his room.
"Oh right, Doc—did you ever catch that pet of yours?" Luo Xin remembered the mouse from last night.
"Let it go." Zong Que replied.
"…Uh." Luo Xin stared blankly. "Doctor, you do know mice reproduce really fast, right?"
Released into the wild? Soon the forest outside the research base might be swarming with them.
Zong Que's brows twitched slightly. "Wasn't aware."
"Right…" Luo Xin muttered. He had already decided to secretly place glue traps in the woods. He would defend the institute at all costs.
…
Every day by the Moon-Jade Sea was beautiful, yet Zong Que never returned to the shore. And no trace of a merman ever appeared at the institute again.
Zong Que repaired the broken "One" in 1314's name and placed it back in its original spot. Soon after, Planet A officially confirmed the appearance of a deep-sea merman and announced that the Alliance would select a companion for him from among the major families.
The news didn't include a photo of the merman, but it was enough to stir the public into a frenzy.
"There really is a deep-sea merman?"
"I wish I could see what a sea fairy looks like… Could they be even more beautiful than natural-born merfolk?"
"The Alliance's protections are tight. Anyone who dares leak a photo would be going up against the Three Great Families."
"The candidates must be from those families. I wonder who the merman will choose."
"Feng Luan is solid—he gives a strong sense of security."
"Ye Zhi isn't bad either…"
Without even seeing the merman's face, the internet had already begun self-organized voting. Candidates from the Three Great Families were far ahead in the polls.
"All of these contenders feel like heaven's chosen," Luo Xin sighed over his lunch.
Not just the top talents of the Three Families, but also many elite youths from other noble houses were included in the list—figures so far above that most people could only dream of reaching them. Yet now, they were only candidates for a merman's companion.
"But it's a deep-sea merman we're talking about—it's only natural," Liu Chao added. "If the Doctor were at the Central government, I bet he'd be a strong contender too."
Zong Que made no comment.
The deep-sea merman was indeed beautiful, but this wasn't just about beauty. This was a contest of power.
What was at stake was the next generation. The offspring of a deep-sea merman could potentially elevate an entire family far beyond its peers.
Power wasn't inherently a bad thing, but as the gears of fate began to turn, whether Yu Hua could make the right decisions in the center of this struggle remained uncertain.
Even small deviations in the original timeline had caused subtle discrepancies. None of the chosen sons of heaven* were fools—they were brilliant and deceptive. A single misjudgment could lead to a future that diverged completely from the original path.
[T/N: 天之驕子 - Protagonists in other words.]
"Aren't you curious what the deep-sea merman looks like, Doctor?" Luo Xin asked eagerly. "Don't you want to have one for yourself?"
"Mm. I'm curious," Zong Que replied as he picked up his tray. "I'm heading back to the lab."
"Oh..." Luo Xin muttered, chewing on his chopsticks as he watched Zong Que walk away. "I feel like someone like the Doctor's going to have a hard time finding a partner in the future."
1314, eavesdropping as always, was secretly proud. Its host already had the biggest and most beautiful merman as a wife—why would he be curious about any others?
"Doctor's really handsome, and he seems like the type who'd stay completely faithful after marriage," Liu Chao said. "I bet he's very popular."
"Yeah, but it's also possible he's just... not into that kind of thing," Luo Xin clicked his tongue. "People with super high IQs are often totally absorbed in their own inner worlds. He might not even need love. I bet if a deep-sea mermaid stood naked in front of him, he wouldn't even blink."
1314 heartily agreed—its host hadn't blinked at all when the deep-sea merman stood there without a stitch on.
Wait... Wouldn't that mean he was staring openly?
1314 suddenly felt like it had stumbled upon a huge secret.
As the game of politics on Planet A began to unfold, Zong Que's research entered a critical phase. He published a paper online that, amid the ongoing frenzy over the deep-sea merman, managed to stir its own wave of attention.
"A fertility pod? That topic's been floated before, but there's a major technical hurdle in life sciences."
"Sounds more like a pipe dream."
"If someone really could overcome that hurdle, what would we need mermaids for?"
"But the embryo technology he mentioned does seem promising."
"What, like a test-tube egg?"
"Similar, but far more difficult to achieve."
"……"
