Chapter 51: Belonging (1)
Just as the bedroom door closed, a knock came from outside. "Doctor, I brought the glass," came Luo Xin's voice.
Zong Que opened the door. Seeing the glass panel being carried in by a small robot, with Luo Xin helping steady it, he stepped aside. "Thank you."
"It's no trouble. Living by the sea, this kind of thing happens all the time. Sometimes a stone flies in like a missile—dead-on impact," Luo Xin said with a laugh as he tilted the glass to push it through the doorway. "I'm used to it by now."
The little assistant entered the room and began patiently cleaning up the shattered glass. "This stone was pretty big."
1314: That's because it wasn't a stone. It was a fist.
That beautiful merman was extremely violent. One punch went clean through.
"Mm," Zong Que replied.
"The glass we use at the institute is tough. Normally, even a big stone wouldn't break it so easily," Luo Xin said, glancing around the room. "Are you alright, Doctor?"
"I'm fine. Maybe the corner of the stone hit just the right spot." Zong Que's voice was calm.
"That's possible. I'm just glad you're okay." Luo Xin finished clearing the shards and removed the damaged frame. As he and the robot began fitting the new window, a sudden scratching sound came from the bedroom door. His eyes shifted toward Zong Que, who was leaning against the frame, and he blinked before continuing with the installation.
But the scratching only grew louder, sharper, echoing unnervingly in the quiet night.
Just as Luo Xin fastened the final piece, he hesitated. "Doctor… I think there's something moving around in your bedroom."
"Probably a mouse," Zong Que replied.
The scratching paused… then intensified, growing even more aggressive and grating.
"That's one bold mouse," Luo Xin remarked, eyeing Zong Que. "I've got glue traps that work wonders."
"It's a pet," Zong Que added quickly, in case the merman inside decided to smash through the door.
Behind him, the scratching immediately ceased.
Luo Xin looked utterly baffled. "You… keep that kind of pet?"
"Mm," Zong Que said evenly. "It's a flower branch rat. Likes to gnaw on things—probably slipped out."
They stared at each other in awkward silence before Luo Xin gave a sheepish smile. "Well, I'll head out now. Better catch your… pet before it eats the curtains."
"Right. Thanks again for today. Take care." Zong Que walked him to the door and closed it firmly—locking it behind him.
The room fell quiet. Zong Que let out a breath, then opened the bedroom door—only to find Yue lying sideways on the bed, smiling at him with eyes full of mischief. His gaze fell to the scratch marks behind the door.
"You wanted to be found?"
"He doesn't pose a threat to me," Yue replied, eyes glimmering. "Besides, don't you think it's… exciting?"
There was no point explaining human rules to a merman. In the sea, Yue never cared about what others thought. Zong Que's gaze lingered on his unabashedly bare form. "Did you run around outside like that?"
"Mm? What's wrong with that?" Yue scooted closer on the bed and casually crossed his legs, his gaze falling on Zong Que's clothes. "Ah, right. Humans like wrapping themselves up. Merfolk don't have that habit."
Zong Que shifted the topic. "When are you going back?"
Yue's eyes dimmed. "I'm not going back."
"How long are you staying?" Zong Que opened the wardrobe, took out a set of clothes, and laid them on the bed. "Put these on before we talk further."
"You aren't going to chase me away?" Yue said, reaching out and gently grabbing his wrist, his eyes shining.
Zong Que looked at his flawless fingers. "Mm."
The windows here were built to withstand hurricanes—strong enough to survive sledgehammer blows. Yet Yue had punched through one like it was paper. Even if he were thrown out, with legs of his own now, he could easily come back. There was no point wasting the effort.
"You really are a good mate," Yue murmured, leaning in close. One hand slipped up under Zong Que's shirt. "I should reward you."
Zong Que caught his hand and pulled it out. "Is this why you came?"
"Yeah." Yue nodded without hesitation. "Is it strange for a merman to want to do this with someone he likes?"
To him, it was perfectly natural.
Zong Que released his hand. "Get dressed."
"I don't really like human clothes," Yue eyed the garments with mild distaste. "Humans are so inexplicably reserved."
"Would you change into legs in front of other merfolk every day?" Zong Que asked.
"Of course not." Yue draped one leg over Zong Que's knee, smiling. "These legs are for your eyes only."
"Human clothes are like your tail," Zong Que said, gripping his ankle and moving his leg off to stop him from exposing himself any further.
"But it's okay to have legs in front of your mate," Yue said as his legs twined around Zong Que's waist. Arms wrapped tight, his bare chest pressing against him. His fingers were already toying with the hem of Zong Que's shirt. "Yet you always wear clothes in front of me."
"Keep this up and I'll toss you out," Zong Que replied, not bothering to stop the wandering hands, but turning his head slightly to meet the eyes of the overly eager merman.
"You're so unreasonable," Yue muttered, resting his chin on Zong Que's shoulder. His pouty lips pursed, and his gorgeous eyes filled with grievance.
"Mm." Zong Que's gaze fell to his body. "Let go."
Yue's eyes darkened with a flicker of reluctance, but he uncoiled his limbs and pulled the shirt next to him over.
He loved this man's cold demeanor—but also feared it just a little.
Though Zong Que wasn't strong, his warnings were always effective.
Yue fumbled with the shirt, watching Zong Que rise. "I don't know how to put this on."
Zong Que glanced back at the merman's smiling face, picked up the shirt, and said, "Hands."
Yue obediently extended his arms, letting the shirt slip over him. Watching Zong Que lower his eyes and carefully button each button, his heart thudded wildly in his chest.
He liked this man.
When Zong Que turned to fetch the trousers, Yue's kiss came without warning.
Zong Que allowed the kiss without changing expression, but when the merman's arms tightened and the kiss began to turn indecent, he pressed a palm to Yue's forehead and gently pushed him away. "Trousers."
Yue stretched out his legs and slipped them on, but then licked his lips, fingers toying with the collar of Zong Que's shirt. "I remember you weren't unresponsive."
That day, despite being drugged, this man hadn't been completely indifferent. That's why Yue had let his guard down.
"Humans don't constantly think about these things." Zong Que pulled him up by the waist, catching the surprised merman in his arms. He helped him into the trousers, tucked in the shirt, and pressed him down to sit on the bed, feeling the brush of a kiss at his cheek.
This merman was always ready to go into heat, no matter the time or place.
"Merfolk aren't like that either," Yue said as he unfastened the top buttons that felt too tight and tugged the neatly tucked shirt free from the waistband. "But because you keep refusing me, I can't stop wanting you. Just let me have you once and I promise I won't pester you every day."
The shirt, once neat and tidy, now hung loosely on his frame. The open collar and exposed waist seemed to shamelessly flaunt the beauty of the merman himself.
"Humans have a phrase for this—'give an inch, take a mile,'" Zong Que said, opening the bedroom door. "You sleep here. I'll take the sofa."
Yue watched his back as he walked out, lips curling faintly at the corners.
[Host, the sofa...] 1314 reminded him quietly, [...is wet.]
That merman had done something utterly despicable.
Zong Que didn't even need to lift the cushions. The entire sofa was soaked—still dripping.
He turned and walked back into the bedroom, meeting the smiling eyes of the merman. He dropped the thin quilt he was holding onto the bed, bent down, and picked Yue up.
"You're pretty strong for a human," Yue commented, wrapping his arms around Zong Que's shoulders without any hint of shame. "You carry me so easily."
Only a healthy, well-built body like this could endure the havoc of a merman—and father a strong, beautiful little merman child.
Zong Que turned and carried him out of the bedroom.
Yue blinked. "Where are you taking me?"
"You're not afraid of water, right? Pick one—sofa or bathtub." Zong Que paused at the bedroom doorway.
Yue's expression froze for a moment, a trace of wounded grievance rising in his eyes. "I want to sleep on the bed... We could share it. I won't do anything, I promise."
His voice trembled slightly toward the end.
Zong Que glanced at the soaked sofa, then headed toward the bathroom.
Yue's expression faltered. "You've already figured out my weakness—what more are you afraid of?"
Zong Que halted, looking down at the merman in his arms for a long moment. "This entanglement between us has no future."
Yue's fingers curled, legs shifting slightly. Zong Que bent down and set him down gently.
The curtain over the broken window hadn't been drawn. Moonlight spilled clearly into the room, and the soft light playing across the ceiling rippled gently with the ebb and flow of the sea, leaving Yue unaccountably restless.
"If we never try," Yue said, serious now, all traces of teasing gone, "how can we be so sure there's no future?"
He'd fallen in love with this human. He wanted to be with him. And yet, after exhausting nearly every method he could think of, all he received in return was this cold, resolute sentence.
Did he really have to drag him beneath the sea by force? But at the mere thought of it, pain welled heavy in his chest.
"Some futures are obvious before they begin," Zong Que said as he met Yue's gaze. The merman stood nearly his equal in height—graceful, radiant.
He was beautiful, yes—but what made him a worthy leader of the merfolk wasn't just beauty and strength, but responsibility.
"What kind of future?" Yue pressed, eyes locked onto him.
"Whether or not merfolk and humans ever truly connect, your territory lies in the sea," Zong Que replied calmly. "Just as you don't feel at home on land, I would never belong to the deep."
Yue's fingers tightened slightly. He thought of life on land—and if it were with this person…
"Yue," Zong Que said softly, "don't give up the vast Moon-Jade Sea for the confines of a tiny bathtub."
Yue's eyes shifted faintly, the deep blue in them dimming like sinking tides. The future was already written, just as fish could not live without water, just as humans could not breathe without air—they had no future.
The night was quiet, only the distant sound of waves brushing the shore. Yue stepped forward and wrapped his arms around Zong Que's waist. This time, Zong Que rested his hand on Yue's hair, pulling him close.
Under the moonlight, this closeness should have been romantic—but Yue's heart was desolate.
He thought, perhaps I should never have fallen in love with this man. That way, he could've dragged him into the sea without a second thought, without worrying about his feelings.
But once a merman chooses a mate, they will never choose another. How could he possibly ignore how the other felt?
Zong Que didn't want to trap him in a small fish tank. And Yue didn't want to trap him in the narrow coral beds of the sea.
The waves shimmered in Yue's eyes as he whispered, "Zong Que… you like me, don't you?"
"Mm." Zong Que gave a soft answer.
This merman was beautiful enough to leave anyone marveling at the craftsmanship of the gods.
"Then, before we part… can't you give yourself to me?" Yue slowly pulled away, his eyes holding both hope and sorrow. His fingertips traced Zong Que's lips, and for once, his expression was solemn. "Even if we must part… I want you to remember me forever. To be mine. Never love anyone else."
Even if he had to leave the one he loved, that human must still belong to him—because Yue had chosen him as his mate. And that human had answered his heart.
1314, still caught up in the tragic romance, suddenly paused—wasn't that a bit… off?
