Chapter 47: Purpose (3)

As he leaned closer, Zong Que instinctively leaned back ever so slightly. "Where have you been?" he asked.

"The deep-sea abyss," Yue said, his tail flicking excitedly. He glanced at the hideous fish still flopping on the ground nearby and beamed. "I caught this fish there. It's very delicious. I know you'll love it."

Zong Que glanced at the fish too. It was extremely ugly. But if this merman could ignore its looks and call it delicious, it must indeed be exceptional… though—

Zong Que reached for a spot on Yue's shoulder where a faint red stain bled through. He plucked off a piece of pale flesh. "What's this?"

"Snake eel meat," Yue leaned in and sniffed it lightly. "That fish was annoying and blocked my way, so I killed it. But its meat isn't very tasty."

"Go take a bath," Zong Que said, attempting to loosen the arms wrapped tightly around him. Yet the merman, reeking of fish and blood, only clung tighter, his eyes brimming with grievance. "You haven't kissed me yet."

1314 thought to itself that it was already a mercy that the host hadn't just thrown the fish straight back out the window.

"Yue, do you want to go back outside?" Zong Que's voice was calm, his tone indifferent.

"Hmph," Yue let out a soft hum. "You're disgusted with me."

"Mm," Zong Que replied.

Yue's silver tail slapped the floor in frustration, the impact cracking the tiles slightly. Just as 1314 began to seriously worry about the host's safety, Zong Que bent down and lifted the sulking merman into his arms. His hands touched the slippery, silky skin, and he quickened his steps, holding his breath.

The bathtub was built for two, yet once filled with water and with the merman inside, it was almost completely filled to the brim.

Now laid out fully in the tub, Yue's tail — often only glimpsed fleetingly in the ocean — could be seen clearly. Smooth lines flowed down his form, each scale shimmering with the iridescence of pearls, blending seamlessly into the curve of his body. It was a beauty no human craft could replicate, the masterpiece of nature itself.

"Zong Que, do you like my tail?" Yue flicked his tail proudly. The tip was more delicate and pliant than silk, like a flowing skirt woven from captured sunlight—until it splashed water all over Zong Que.

"Yue, stop messing around," Zong Que said, rinsing Yue's hair and skin with cold water. "What happened in the sea?"

"The merfolk of the Dark Abyss clan are fighting," Yue said, cupping his hands under the flowing water to wash away the lingering fishy scent.

Truth be told, he didn't much like that stench himself. Food sticking to your skin was uncomfortable, and it was a type of food he particularly disliked.

He had originally wanted the human to feel a little sorry for him, but instead, Zong Que showed no sympathy at all — he even looked ready to throw him out.

"Was it dangerous?" Zong Que asked, his gaze sweeping over the merman's skin as the stickiness washed away.

"Very dangerous," Yue said, his blue eyes misting with water, as if on the verge of tears. He reached out, wrapping his arms around Zong Que's shoulders, his body trembling slightly. "I was so scared. Can I stay with you tonight? Please?"

Zong Que looked at the lightly swaying fish tail and silently judged that this little creature was quite skilled at playing pitiful. "Alright. You can sleep here."

"I don't want to sleep here. I want to sleep in your bed," Yue said, gently stroking Zong Que's jawline, his deep blue eyes growing darker. "Aren't companions supposed to sleep together?"

Zong Que paused, his gaze shifting toward the merman before him. This seemingly innocent and beautiful creature had a hidden, ferocious nature — plunging into the abyss and tearing apart snake eels as if it were nothing. If Yue had retained memories from his previous life, he would never have been capable of such violence.

"What's wrong?" Yue leaned in softly, kissing Zong Que's lips. The kiss drifted lower and lower, his silver tail sweeping with a wider arc—though he seemed to remember to restrain himself halfway, stopping his movements in the water. Yet his hands, following the kisses, grew increasingly unrestrained.

"We're not companions yet," Zong Que said, catching his wandering hand and gently setting it aside. He stood and fetched a toothbrush. "Brush your teeth."

"You're rejecting me again. I want to sleep with you." Yue's tail thrashed, sending splashes everywhere.

"We kissed already. So where are your legs?" Zong Que gently lifted Yue's chin. "Yue, humans don't believe in fairy tales."

The merman in the bathtub froze. It wasn't until Zong Que had finished washing his hands and left the room that the silver tail stirred slightly, as if belatedly reacting—then immediately started thrashing wildly. Yue's slender fingers gripped the edge of the tub, embedding into the material as easily as pressing into tofu.

His breathing deepened, and those deep blue eyes glimmered with an excitement he could barely contain.

This human was incredible. He made Yue want to lick his eyes, dampen his lashes, kiss every inch of his body, reshape him, drag him down into the deep coral seas of the Moon-Jade Sea and... conceive little merfolk together.

He was already starting to lose patience.

Meanwhile, Zong Que exited the room and summoned a cleaning robot, instructing it to mop up all the water inside. His gaze swept past the bathtub, now bearing clear claw marks from desperate grasping. He picked up a pair of scissors, calmly stabbed into the wound on the fish caught earlier, lifted it out, and tossed it into a bucket.

1314, who had been worrying that the little merman would be heartbroken after being rejected by the host, was stunned into silence.

It had just witnessed a scene where the once pitifully adorable "kitten" turned into a tiger, and the host dealt with the situation by efficiently stabbing and discarding the fish without even blinking.

It suddenly wanted to hug itself and tremble.

The kitten had grown into a fierce tiger—and the host was no easy mark either.

[Host, you must be careful.] 1314, having soothed its fragile heart that had been deceived by a pretty face, issued a friendly reminder.

After all, it was the host's system. Though it had once been momentarily swayed by Yue's beauty, it would always stand on the host's side.

[Mm?] Zong Que picked up clean clothes and left the room.

He couldn't shower in his own bathroom anymore. The merman's level of lustfulness could be summed up with just four words: a mermaid's nature is base.

[That merman is dangerous.] 1314 lowered its voice. [Host, you can't let your guard down just because he saved your life.]

[Mm.] Zong Que knew the system had finally come to its senses.

He never counted on the system to make decisions for him. After all, this was his life to live—others' advice was just for reference.

Still, he couldn't help but wonder: What exactly had the merman done inside the bathroom to make even a mermaid-adoring system so wary?

[Don't take it lightly.] 1314 warned. [He gouged five deep cracks into the bathtub with just one grab.]

Even the merman's smile made the system's fur stand on end—it did not look like the smile of a good mermaid at all.

[I remember you used to like him a lot. You even wanted me to go play in the ocean with him.] Zong Que said as he entered the public bath and began changing clothes.

[I'm sorry.] 1314 metaphorically banged its head on the ground in apology, then quickly added in a soothing tone: [Host, don't be afraid. If any danger arises from a system misjudgment, the Source World allows us to activate a golden finger to guarantee your absolute safety—protecting both body and mind.]

Zong Que's fingers paused slightly as he closed the locker. The Source World's protection system really was thorough. [Aren't you afraid people might exploit it?]

[If the host abuses it, they'll be classified as a bug.] 1314 promptly added.

Zong Que made his way into the shower room—the system's protection structure truly was watertight.

...

When Zong Que returned to his room, the floor and windows had already been cleaned, but the storm outside still hadn't stopped. The water outside the glass remained just below the window line.

But when he circled around the living room, he found—on his bed—an unexpected addition: a fish.

The bedside lamp was still on. The fish had sprawled itself across the bed, rolling around until the bedding was a chaotic mess. The culprit, meanwhile, was now holding hands with the home robot, dismantling its parts one by one. When Yue noticed Zong Que's return, he looked up at him, his bright eyes utterly unashamed and sparkling with excitement. "You're back!"

1314 felt the urge to draw a giant hashtag "井" symbol on the host's forehead. That would have perfectly captured the situation.

This was no longer its beloved little kitten—it had grown into a tiger!

"What are you doing?" Zong Que asked, glancing briefly at the ruffled bed. As he came closer, he noticed it was dry—there was no fishy smell either, only a faint, sweet scent of seaweed.

"I wanted to know how it talks," Yue said, patting the little robot's head, a trace of wistfulness between his brows.

This lifeless thing could busily move about the room, obey orders, and even hold conversations. The humans who created it clearly possessed a kind of intelligence the merfolk of the Moon-Jade Sea lacked.

"Its structure is quite complicated," Zong Que said as he crouched down to pick up the dismantled parts. Yue hadn't pried them off with brute force; he had removed them carefully, along the natural seams—fortunately, they were only minor components and casing pieces.

Humans yearned for deep-sea mermaids, and deep-sea mermaids, in turn, were curious about humans.

Had the two species successfully merged and evolved hundreds of years ago, it might have been a blessing for both sides. But some people's greed ruined it all.

Zong Que lowered his eyes and began reassembling the pieces one by one. Once the casing was snapped back into place, he restarted the little machine. "How did you come here?"

Yue, who had been watching with rapt attention, smiled when he met Zong Que's gaze. "Of course, I turned my tail into legs. Your magic worked!"

"So," Zong Que asked while adjusting the robot's settings, "you turned back because the kiss didn't last long enough?"

The robot whirred to life and clattered a few steps forward under Yue's curious gaze, eventually wandering out of the room.

Yet Yue's attention didn't stray entirely after it; he met Zong Que's gaze with a smile and nodded softly. "Mm, that's exactly why."

Zong Que rose to his feet. "You'll sleep here tonight. I'll take the sofa."

The merman on the bed frowned slightly. As he sat up, his long silver hair tumbled over his shoulders and down his back, like a river of moonlight—so beautiful it took one's breath away. Yet the slight furrow between his brows betrayed his reluctance.

"Actually," Yue said hesitantly, "only a merman's mate can see their legs."

He reached out and gently took Zong Que's hand, his eyes filled with a touch of longing. "So... do you want to see my legs?"

The merman on the bed was breathtaking. With that expression, it was almost like he was offering himself up, inviting anything and everything one might wish to do. Very few would have been able to refuse such a temptation. But Zong Que knew: the moment he said yes, that pitiful, delicate expression would vanish without a trace.

This merman—was shamelessly, blatantly flirting.

"I don't want to," Zong Que said calmly, withdrawing his hand and stepping out of the bedroom, firmly closing the door behind him.

Yue stared at his empty hand and the closed door, then flopped back onto the bed like a puppet with its strings cut. His hair spilled across his face, softening his features and shading his deep-set eyes with contemplation.

In theory, humans should have found it hard to resist the twin temptations of a mermaid's beauty and voice. Yet the human he had chosen showed no reaction whatsoever—even when he'd touched his wrist, the man's pulse hadn't quickened. It wasn't a lie. He truly felt nothing.

But, Yue thought, his gaze deepening, that only made it all the more challenging—and infinitely more interesting.

He lay sideways, pressing a hand over his heart. Excitement thrummed within him, making his heartbeat thunder in his chest.
