Chapter 46: Purpose (2)
The first light of morning fell on a cluster of beautiful coral outside the window. Zong Que picked it up carefully and placed it on his workbench.
He changed into his clothes and, with the soft sea breeze at his back, made his way to the familiar rock by the shore. Amid the rolling waves, a beautiful merman draped one arm over the rock, his shimmering tail flicking lightly above the water, an enchanting sight: "You're here early today."
"I promised you I would," Zong Que answered, settling onto the rock and gazing at the merman before him.
The other had once saved his life—and nearly cost him it as well. But yesterday's debts had already been settled yesterday.
"This is a gift for you. Don't lose it again," Yue placed a bulging sack in front of Zong Que.
"Alright." Zong Que tucked the bag behind him. "Thank you. I need to go train now."
"Morning training is like swimming for merfolk, right? Is that why your body looks so good?" Yue asked, reaching out to touch his waist and abdomen. His cool fingers slipped under Zong Que's shirt without seeming to realize it, gently tracing upward.
The icy touch pressed close. Zong Que stared at that constantly swaying tail, at the bright gleam in the merman's eyes, and caught Yue's wandering hand, pulling it free.
"Yue," he said, "humans don't court like this."
"Then how do they?" Yue's fingers curled back slightly, a hint of reluctance flashing through his eyes. But then he smiled, lips curving sweetly, and said, "Zong Que, will you teach me?"
"Human courtship starts here," Zong Que said, reaching toward Yue's chest—only to have his wrist swiftly caught by slender, beautiful fingers, stopping him in midair.
The merman's deep blue eyes flashed cold for a moment, but when they met Zong Que's gaze, the chill melted back into a watery tenderness: "What were you about to do?"
Zong Que looked at him calmly, his palm resting lightly against Yue's chest: "Human love begins here."
The heart of a merman, like that of a human, beat steadily on the left side of the chest—pulsing with life. Yet the rhythm beneath his hand remained calm, unhurried.
In nature, many males seek mates purely to produce offspring—a primal instinct, not an echo of true emotion. Zong Que held no reproach for the merman. He himself had no desire for offspring, no quickened heartbeat. To appreciate someone's beauty was not the same as falling in love. How could he demand a love he did not feel himself?
Even if the expressions were familiar—even if the soul was the same—this was not Lin Heng. This was a new life altogether.
The warmth of Zong Que's palm spread steadily across Yue's chest. The merman gazed up at him, tail flicking lightly, a brilliant smile curving his lips: "For merfolk, love begins with the tail. It's not the same as humans."
Zong Que already knew. Yue didn't understand love. He was simply a pure-hearted merman, instinctively seeking his mate.
[Oh, this habit is just like a puppy's! Wagging its tail when it sees someone it likes!] 1314 suddenly realized.
Zong Que: [...]
Was this system really quality-tested before it left the factory?
"But I don't have a tail," Zong Que said.
"That's easy! If you come into the sea with me, I can slowly modify your body until you grow a tail," Yue said eagerly, moving closer, his eyes filled with impatient excitement.
"Yue, courtship requires more patience," Zong Que said, gently patting Yue's cheek. Rising to his feet, he added, "See you at noon. What would you like to eat?"
Yue tilted his head slightly, resting against the rock with a soft laugh: "Whatever you bring, I'll like."
"Mm." Without looking back, Zong Que turned and left.
The waves surged along the shoreline. Yue lounged lazily against the rock, his tail flicking lightly back and forth, watching the spray of the sea. His voice rose in a sing-song lilt: "Such a sly human."
Humans were always too clever. But that man—he had such beautiful eyes, like the depths of the ocean itself—calm and dark, yet hiding countless storms and dangers.
Though he had been rejected again and again, Yue didn't mind. Merfolk were always patient with the ones they chose to court.
His tail flicked once more, scattering phosphorescent sparks across the waves, and then, with a graceful twist, Yue disappeared into the deep sea.
...
At noon, Zong Que returned, carrying two boxes, and sat on the sea rocks. One box held a simple meal; the other, a whole roast chicken.
Just as he opened the boxes, the beautiful merman came riding the waves toward him, eyes fixed unerringly on the roast chicken.
"This one's for you. And don't swallow the bones this time," Zong Que said, lifting his own box of food.
"Thank you," Yue said, his tail swaying lightly as he leaned against the rock. He pressed his lips to Zong Que's cheek, murmuring, "Zong Que, I really like you."
Zong Que turned his eyes toward him, looking calmly at the close-up face. "Eat first," he said.
So similar—not in appearance, but in something deeper.
The same soul, but a different person. Could it be that even when memories of reincarnation were lost, a soul would carry the same habits and expressions? Or... was this a deliberate hint, trying to tell him they were the same?
Despite Zong Que's reminders, by the end of the meal, there was nothing left of the chicken but the head and the tail, while the merman's stomach remained perfectly flat.
Before Yue could start licking his fingers, Zong Que caught his hand, wiping the oil clean from his fingertips and lips. "Are you full?" he asked.
The merman shook his head without hesitation. "This fish was a little small, and its head wasn't very good-looking."
That was apparently his explanation for not eating the chicken's head.
"That's a chicken. I'll bring you another next time," Zong Que said, folding the used napkin neatly.
Yue extended five fingers toward him, his eyes sparkling brightly. "Bring me five more!"
"No," Zong Que refused flatly.
The merman's tail suddenly slowed its gentle movements. He tugged lightly on Zong Que's arm and said pitifully: "Zong Que, I'm still hungry. I don't even have enough energy to swim..."
1314, the system, immediately switched sides: [Host, bring it to him!] Who could possibly resist the pleading of their dream mermaid? No one!
Zong Que lowered his gaze and said calmly: "Humans don't eat that much. If I bring too much food, it'll raise suspicion."
1314: […] Oh right, it forgot—the host was immune!
Yue's tail stirred the water gently as he said with a glint in his eyes, "I can flood the whole place so there's only you left. Then no one will suspect anything."
"Threats don't work on me," Zong Que said coolly. He packed up the lunchboxes and stood up. "If you're hungry, catch your own fish. A courting partner who can't even hunt won't be able to care for their mate."
Stepping down from the rock, he walked toward the research institute.
Left behind in the cold water, Yue froze, his tail momentarily still. Had he just been despised for being too weak? If the others in the clan found out, he'd surely be laughed at.
Yet the way that human fed him so naturally made Yue want to grab him and pull him straight into the sea.
…
Back at the research institute, Zong Que dumped the lunchboxes and chicken bones into the waste disposal. Luo Xin, passing by with his own lunchbox, gasped in amazement: "The doctor's appetite's been great lately."
"The experiments are going well, so I'm in a good mood," Zong Que said as he washed his hands. "Come on, time to work."
The deep sea was shrouded in darkness, invisible to human eyes. But a flash of silver light darted freely through the water. Any fish that saw it scattered instantly; those that didn't were pierced straight through and sank deeper into the abyss, where countless shadowy shapes swarmed to devour them.
The night wind howled, thick and oppressive, as if heralding the arrival of a great storm. Black waves rolled across the ocean, battering the coast.
The jungle behind the laboratory rustled and groaned under the rising wind. Before sand and debris could whip through the air, every window was quickly sealed.
Inside, the lab was warm and quiet. But the heavy air pressed down unbearably until rain came lashing against the windows in heavy torrents, thunder rumbling and lightning splitting the sky.
When a stray stone shattered one of the external cameras, the lab's lights began to flicker ominously.
It felt as though the waves were eating away at the foundation beneath them, making the whole research institute sway uneasily like a lonely island in the midst of a stormy sea.
The two young assistants clutched their test tubes, their hands trembling in panic.
"What's happening? Are we about to have a tsunami?"
"Is the Sea God of the Moon-Jade Sea angry again?" Luo Xin muttered under his breath.
Zong Que wondered if Luo Xin and his system would get along too well. He calmly set down his instruments and said: "The voltage is unstable. Today's experiments end here. Go back to your quarters and rest."
"I... I don't really want to go back," Luo Xin stammered.
"Me neither..." Liu Chao shrank into himself. "What if the building collapses and we get buried inside?"
"The institute's waterproofing is top-notch," Zong Que said, unfazed, as he removed his protective gear. "Even if we're flooded, the nutrient supplies are enough to last a month."
He carefully secured the Petri dishes and shut down the equipment. "You can stay here if you like. I'm heading back first."
The two young men instantly widened their eyes. They had only stayed because the doctor was here—it felt safer somehow. If the doctor left, why would they stay?!
"We'll go back too," Luo Xin said hurriedly with a nervous laugh.
Liu Chao nodded fervently in agreement.
Unfazed, Zong Que took off his lab coat and set it aside neatly. "Lock the doors before you leave," he said.
"Understood!" Luo Xin replied quickly.
Outside, the storm raged on. The entire research facility's power grid flickered. Inside Zong Que's room, only a single rechargeable desk lamp glowed, casting a warm, dim circle of light. After showering, Zong Que sat at his desk, calmly analyzing experimental data, when he heard a faint tapping against the window.
He glanced up and rose to investigate. On a stormy night like this, there was only one being who would tap at his window.
[Host, could it be a ghost?] 1314 asked nervously.
[No.] Zong Que replied, drawing back the curtains.
Pressed against the window was an extraordinarily ugly fish face, its mouth wide open, barbed spines clearly visible inside. Its bulbous eyes rolled around grotesquely.
1314 shrieked, [Aaaaah!!! A ghost, a ghost, a ghost!!! Help!!!]
Ignoring the system's wailing, Zong Que calmly opened the window. Instantly, the night wind rushed in, carrying the scent of rain and seawater. The grotesque fish, however, was clearly being held by a slender hand. As it was pulled away, the beautiful visage of a merman was revealed—Yue.
The seawater had risen to the windowsill. The merman's tail swayed in the water. Because of the storm, his normally neat appearance was drenched, rain constantly washing over his body along with the blood from his shoulder. He looked both pitiful and wretched.
"Zong Que, I caught a fish for you," Yue said, his voice nearly swept away by the wind and rain. Yet even in such a night, it drifted through the air as tenderly as a song.
"Do you want to come in?" Zong Que asked, looking at the soaking wet merman outside.
Yue's eyes instantly lit up with delight. "Can I?"
"You can." Zong Que opened the window wider and stepped aside.
Yue fluttered his tail, moving closer. First, he tossed the grotesque, wriggling fish into the room—it landed on the floor with a wet splat. Then, clinging to the window frame, he tried to climb inside. But a fish tail was no substitute for legs; he teetered left and right, nearly tumbling headfirst into the room.
[Host, how could you just watch him struggle like this?] 1314 practically begged, heartbroken.
Zong Que walked over and, under the merman's cautious gaze, encircled his slender waist, lifting him easily into the room. Water splashed onto the floor as he did so, and Zong Que frowned slightly. [If this goes on, the room's going to flood.]
[Oh…] 1314 responded dejectedly.
All it wanted was to deal with its troublesome host.
"Zong Que," Yue murmured, clinging to him with wide, grateful eyes, "thank you."
"You're welcome," Zong Que said, steadying him with one arm before shutting the window, blocking out the raging storm.
Yue blinked his long lashes, a smile blooming on his lips as he looked at the human before him. "You're so smart."
"Can you turn your tail into legs?" Zong Que asked, glancing down at the merman he held.
Including the tail, Yue's full length easily exceeded two meters.
"Isn't my tail more beautiful than human legs?" Yue asked, flicking his tail playfully and sending droplets flying everywhere.
Zong Que surveyed the growing puddles all over the floor. "Not very convenient on land," he said dryly.
"For us merfolk, to turn our tails into legs requires the magic of true love," Yue said, brushing his hand over Zong Que's waist and leaning in with a smile. "You have to kiss me, then my tail will become legs."
