Chapter 42: Invitation (1)

Just as Zong Que rose to his feet, the sound of hurried footsteps echoed outside the door. Several people pushed the door open and rushed in. Seeing the empty bed, the one leading them cried out, "Doctor? Doctor! Where's the doctor?"

"Doctor!"

"Doctor!!!"

They scoured the room in a panic, someone even flinging open the window. Meanwhile, Zong Que washed his face, wiped the water off, and calmly stepped out. "I'm here."

The person standing by the bathroom door turned around abruptly, caught off guard by Zong Que's face. Their mouth fell open in shock, and they stumbled backward, tripping over themselves and landing heavily on the floor before finally crying out, "Ahh!! Ouch, ouch, ouch!"

"Doctor, you're awake?!"

"Are you all right?!"

The others quickly gathered around, helping the fallen man up. Awkwardly and almost instinctively, they kept a distance of about a meter from Zong Que, their eyes filled with deep concern.

"I'm fine," Zong Que replied, his gaze sweeping across the young faces before him. "Where is this place?"

The group seemed very young, but each wore a white lab coat, and the name badges pinned to their chests clearly displayed their names and titles.

This was likely a research outpost.

"Doctor, this is the Moon-Jade Sea Research Station," said a baby-faced young man, looking up at him with wide, earnest eyes.

"Was your ship wrecked? We found you washed up on the shore," added another, a tall and slender youth.

"We encountered a mist over the Moon-Jade Sea," Zong Que said, brushing past them. The young people, parting like the Red Sea, made way as he walked to the bedside and sat down. "The others are likely dead. You can file a report."

The young researchers exchanged glances. A heavy silence fell over the room until someone finally spoke: "Understood. Please rest for now. In three days, you'll need another session in the recovery pod."

Noticing the sorrow they couldn't quite conceal, Zong Que added, "Please also send me a copy of the lab's research data."

"Of course, right away," they answered, a flicker of hope lighting up their faces as they bustled out of the room.

Peace returned. Only the sound of the sea breeze fluttering the curtains brought in the crisp, moist scent of the ocean.

Zong Que moved to the window, pulled the billowing white curtains aside, and was momentarily blinded by the dazzling light. Before him stretched an endless, sun-drenched blue sea.

The water was a deep, pure blue, sparkling under the sun. Wave after wave lapped gently at the fine, white sands. In the distance, seagulls soared through the sky, crying out in short, sharp calls.

The Moon-Jade Sea.

The legendary dwelling place of the deep-sea merfolk—so breathtaking it seemed unreal.

It had become legend because no one had seen a deep-sea mermaid for hundreds of years. Even though humans had inherited their bloodline, extending their lifespans up to two centuries or more, memories of those encounters had long been shrouded in doubt. Some even believed that the deep-sea merfolk had gone extinct, that the mist and tempests over the Moon-Jade Sea were the ocean's wrath for the extinction of such a beautiful race.

Because it was only a legend, the research station here had languished in near abandonment, its operations little more than a formality. Only those least favored by the Alliance were posted here, staring day after day at the rising and setting sun, with almost no hope of being reassigned.

Those sent here were, in essence, the forsaken. Just like the body Zong Que now inhabited.

The original owner had been exiled after colleagues plagiarized his research and falsely accused him of trying to steal their findings.

Normally, skirting the shores of the Moon-Jade Sea posed little danger, but somehow, his ship had veered off course one night, plunging straight into the mist. The vessel was smashed to pieces by raging waves, casting all aboard into the deep.

Zong Que closed his eyes. In the final moments of the original owner's memories, there had been a flash of darkness—whether lightning or a fleeting mermaid's tail, it was impossible to tell.

Many of the memories were chaotic. Sliding his fingers across the translucent screen before him, Zong Que browsed the experimental data. It resembled the displays he had seen in the system's world, though the system's technology had clearly surpassed the limits of three-dimensional space. This screen, in contrast, was designed for convenient human use.

The body's original owner held a vast reservoir of knowledge, but even with a solid foundation, integrating and mastering this world's more advanced material would take considerable time.

Being banished here was, for now, a blessing.

He slid the screen into his wrist-worn smart device, newly issued by the research station to replace the old one destroyed by seawater.

"Doctor, it's time for your next treatment," the baby-faced youth said, knocking lightly at the door.

"Alright, I'll be there shortly. Thank you," Zong Que replied, glancing up at him.

There were few researchers here, most of them very young. Many had been assigned after long stretches without advancement elsewhere. It was only natural that they pinned their hopes on his arrival.

If Zong Que wanted to stop the war looming on the horizon, he would need the strength to reshape society itself.

This high-level world and its mission were, as expected, far more challenging.

After another session in the recovery pod, the swelling on Zong Que's face had gone down significantly. Though scars still marked his skin, and the puffiness around his eyes remained, one could finally make out the structure of his features. He no longer looked so frightening that a mere glance would send people stumbling.

"Doctor, after the next session, you should be fully recovered!" the young man said with a bright smile.

"Thank you." Zong Que glanced at his name tag—Luo Xin. He nodded slightly. "I'm going for a walk."

"Alright, feel free. Just don't go into the sea," Luo Xin reminded him earnestly.

"Got it." Leaving the coastal research station, Zong Que descended the gentle slope of stones and stepped onto the wide beach.

The waves lapped at the shore, smoothing the sand until it gleamed, spotless and clean. Here and there, tiny bubbles rose from beneath the sand, marking the presence of small, hidden lives.

This place was beautiful. Pristine natural beauty, untouched by human hands—pure to its very core.

Zong Que activated his wrist device and used its powerful camera function to capture the scene before him. Yet just as the image froze, a flash of piercing, brilliant light streaked across his field of vision, too fast for even the camera to catch.

[Wow, what a beautiful merman—so beautiful, so beautiful, so beautiful…] 1314, his system, captured the sight—and, overwhelmed by excitement, found itself repeating his words like a broken record.

Lowering the device, Zong Que stared out at the seemingly calm sea. Neither camera nor naked eye had managed to catch that figure. The merman's speed had been extraordinary.

But why had it appeared in the coastal waters?

Was it the one who had saved him earlier? Or Yu Hua? Or perhaps another merman, curious about the world of humans?

Zong Que climbed onto a rock at the edge of the sea and sat there, letting the wind whip around him. Beneath the water, beyond the limits of human perception, a figure with long, silver-white hair floated like seaweed, swaying gently with the ocean's currents. Eyes of deep ocean blue gazed upward at the surface, blinking slowly. A few bubbles escaped from his parted lips, then the merman flipped his body and swam into the vastness of the deep sea.

Humans looked so strange, thought the merman idly. He wondered if that particular human had survived.

[Ah, he's gone…] 1314 sighed with regret.

Zong Que knew—the mermaid had left.

It was better that way.

For now, remaining hidden from humanity's eyes would give them a better chance to live in peace. [Your aesthetic tastes seem to align with humans.] he remarked.

[Of course! Humans are to us systems what kittens are to humans—there are handsome ones, cute ones, beautiful ones.] 1314 replied, utterly enraptured. [That merman just now was simply perfect. My dream kitten!]

Zong Que: "…"

The merman probably wouldn't share that sentiment.

1314 remained enchanted for a while, but after that day, it never mentioned seeing a merman again.

After Zong Que's third treatment, all the wounds on his body had finally healed. The man who gazed back at him from the mirror was strikingly handsome, with features both noble and refined.

There was a distinct resemblance to Zong Que's own face—though perhaps because of long years spent buried in research, the body's frame and posture lacked a natural, balanced grace.

"I never imagined Doctor could be so handsome," Luo Xin exclaimed.

"Indeed. You must be very popular on Planet A!" Liu Chao, the tall, slender youth, chimed in, though his voice faltered awkwardly. "Doctor… I'm sorry."

"We'll go back," Zong Que said simply, clapping Liu Chao lightly on the shoulder before turning to leave.

"Yes, sir!" The group of young researchers straightened at once, spirits visibly lifted by those few words.

[Host, do you want a 'scientific genius' cheat code? I can offer a ten percent discount!] 1314 offered enthusiastically.

[No need. Just the study materials will do.] Zong Que replied, his gaze steady as he looked ahead.

Everything he sought, he would seize with his own hands. Only that which was won by his own ability could truly belong to him.

Besides, the recorded timeline of that great war was still far in the future. He had plenty of time to prepare.

1314 was momentarily dejected, but then realized—this world would once again allow it to laze about as a useless little system. [Host, do your best!] it cheered.

Had Zong Que been in the position of an ordinary person, he would have had to hide the pace of his learning. But as one of the former team leaders of the Central Laboratory, he had no such concerns.

He needed no schedules. Each day, after early morning exercises and quick meals, he poured every remaining moment into absorbing the knowledge of this world, organizing and mastering it like an ever-efficient machine, seemingly incapable of weariness or boredom.

1314, mourning its useless existence as a system, still tried to comfort its host: [Host, don't worry. The recovery serum will protect your hair.]

Zong Que: "..."

Three months were enough for him to gain a thorough understanding of this world and its current level of research.

Compared to the Central Laboratory's cutting-edge equipment, the research facilities at the Moon-Jade Sea were like children's toys. "What's the annual budget?" he asked.

"Just enough to cover our living expenses," Liu Chao answered, looking a little dispirited. "There haven't been any research breakthroughs... and despite all our surveys, we haven't even found a single strand of mermaid hair."

Zong Que flipped through the financial reports page by page.

Because the merfolk moved too swiftly for the naked eye to catch—and official research teams were strictly forbidden from using scanning devices within the Moon-Jade Sea—their efforts had yielded little.

"Doctor, what should we do?" Luo Xin asked, looking up at him.

"Change direction," Zong Que said, closing the reports.

This wasn't merely a matter of funding. This place had already been abandoned. The ultimate goal behind hunting for merfolk had always been to boost human fertility. They no longer needed to waste time searching for merfolk—they could move straight to the core research.

"Mm?" A chorus of confused voices rose among the young researchers.

"I need to procure this equipment," Zong Que said, sending them a list along with his own savings. "We're going to study reproduction."

Mouths fell open in astonishment. Liu Chao glanced at the equipment list and, almost instinctively, snapped to attention: "Mission guaranteed!"

The young researchers bustled off, full of excitement. Meanwhile, Zong Que sat by the sea, listening to the waves as he studied his materials.

Learning came easily. But breaking through—to innovate—was far harder. Especially when it involved the mysteries of life itself. It would require all his effort and dedication.

The waves crashed against the rocks. In the distance, a young man's voice called out: "Doctor, time to eat!"

"I'm coming," Zong Que responded, rising from the rocks and making his way back to the research station.

The sea breeze billowed against his shirt, outlining the smooth, sculpted lines of his muscles. His dark hair fluttered lightly. The sunlight traced the fine angles of his handsome face, and his deep, calm eyes seemed to conceal an entire night sky within them. Long legs moved steadily forward, cutting a striking figure against the backdrop of the glittering ocean.

At that moment, the waves near the shore stirred slightly.
