Chapter 41: Ran Away (3)

Three days passed swiftly. When summoned again, 1314 checked the host's stats and found everything perfectly restored to the starting point.

[Host, shall we begin the next world?]

[Mm.] Zong Que answered.

[Alright, preparing now. Please don't expect too much~]

[1314 System Notification: World loading... Memory transmission in progress...]

His body seemed to rise and fall with invisible tides. Each surge of water lifted him weightlessly, only to drop him again as it receded. His body was freezing, his throat parched and raw, burning with the taste of blood.

Was this... the sea?

The seawater had not only ravaged his throat but had also scorched his lungs. Zong Que tried to open his eyes but found even breathing beyond him.

[A recovery potion has been administered.] At the sound of 1314's voice, his breath eased. In the next moment, he heard a soft splash, the sound of a fish leaping across the water's surface, merging seamlessly with the whispering waves.

[System 1314 Mission Release: Task 1 — Survive as the original body's owner; Task 2 — Change Yue's original fate.]

Yue — leader of the Silver Moon Clan, a remnant of the Siren race, born within the Moon-Jade Sea, perished in a great war against humanity. His body was dredged up, sealed away, and exhibited as the last of the ancient deep-sea merfolk.

Missions were usually triggered upon encountering key targets. That earlier splash…

"Someone's over there! Is it a shipwreck survivor?!"

From a distance, footsteps crunched across the sand, accompanied by the shouts of several people.

Drawing closer, Zong Que felt himself being lifted, hands checking him over.

"Doctor, are you alright, Doctor?"

"Quick, bring the stretcher!"

"Summon the robots!"

The world descended into a chaotic clamor, yet Zong Que's mind sank deeper into thought. The recovery potion had restored him at what humans would deem a miraculous pace. Yet for a shipwrecked victim washed ashore, healing should have taken months.

His consciousness faded, the roar of the sea and the cries of people slipping into silence.

When Zong Que awoke again, the first thing he saw was a pristine white ceiling. He lay on a soft bed, his body no longer trapped in hypothermia. Feeling returned to places he had thought numb.

At the same time, memories of the original body — along with the world's timeline — flooded into his mind.

This was an era when merfolk could bear children.

[Host, do you have any questions?] 1314 stayed alert, monitoring him closely.

After all, this was a higher-difficulty world — perhaps it could finally prove its worth and shake off its reputation as a useless system.

Indeed, it hadn't even had a chance to intervene in the previous worlds.

[Are merfolk and humans not reproductively isolated?] Zong Que quickly gleaned insights about this world's science from the original body's memories.

Here, human technological progress had far surpassed the previous world. Centuries ago, humanity had already left its birthplace, voyaging to find habitable new worlds. As the species evolved into a shared destiny community, alliances formed to promote integration.

Yet progress came at a price: fertility rates plummeted year after year. Humanity's reproductive ability deteriorated and, in many cases, disappeared altogether. Even with extensive efforts to boost birth rates, the number of newborns sharply declined.

It was during this crisis, centuries ago, that beings long thought mythical — merfolk — appeared among humans. They came with the goal of exploring the cosmos together, forming contracts to bear children with humanity.

The merfolk of the deep seas were stunningly beautiful, hailed as the elves of the oceans. Born in the abyss, their bodies were incredibly resilient, and their fertility remarkably high.

Initially, the agreement called for voluntary unions between humans and merfolk. But too few merfolk were willing to leave the ocean, and those rare hybrid children tested far beyond humanity's peak physical parameters. The discovery triggered chaos across human society.

It became clear: humanity's evolution now demanded merfolk — and demanded them in large numbers.

Some organizations, ignoring the official alliances and agreements, secretly launched operations in the dead of night. They deployed overwhelming technological force, seeking to capture the entire merfolk race.

Though human technology was formidable, so too was merfolk strength in their native seas. Central governments condemned the rogue organizations, but were powerless to stop them. As a result, the human alliance fractured, plunging the world into a century-long dark war.

Captured merfolk faced two fates: the lucky ones were auctioned off to become companions of the powerful; the unlucky ones were dissected in laboratories, stripped of their genes to fuel humanity's grotesque quest for hybrid perfection.

Yet the merfolk were not passive victims. They retaliated fiercely — slaying humans during forced matings, stirring up storms and monstrous waves to drag entire fleets into the crushing depths, avenging their kin.

Even when humanity succeeded in creating hybrid merfolk through genetic modification, the results were disheartening. These "artificial" merfolk were weak, their tails incapable of transforming into legs, and their fertility rates lagged far behind those of the true deep-sea merfolk.

Later, a handful of "natural" merfolk were born — rare beings who could shift their tails into legs, boasting fertility far superior to their artificially created counterparts. Yet, even their existence could not entirely dispel the shadow of humanity's declining birthrate.

These natural merfolk were raised by humans, while the first generation of children born from deep-sea merfolk began to come of age, ushering in a period of profound transformation for human society.

Three great families rose seemingly overnight, as if orchestrated by unseen hands. They swiftly unified humanity's scattered forces and jointly enacted a series of ironclad decrees:

No capturing merfolk.

No unauthorized experimentation on merfolk.

No harming merfolk under any circumstances.

...

Hundreds of such laws were proclaimed. The dark forces that had once thrived in the shadows were purged, almost all facing death sentences. Thus ended the age of darkness, and with it came a new era — one where both natural and artificial merfolk could live without fear.

Yet, over the once-glorious Moon-Jade Sea, an impenetrable mist began to rise.

No matter how advanced the vessel, any ship that entered the mist would lose its way. Those daring to venture deeper would be capsized by towering waves, swallowed whole by the bottomless ocean. From that time onward, no human ever again caught sight of a deep-sea merfolk.

Hundreds of years have passed since those bleak days. Human society, clinging to the birth of artificial and natural merfolk, has managed to barely maintain its numbers. Meanwhile, every birth of a natural merfolk was regarded as a miracle — enough to elevate an ordinary family into the highest echelons of power.

[There's no reproductive barrier in this world.] 1314, keen to shield its host from culture shock, quickly explained. [In fact, in high-level worlds, you'll encounter all sorts of bizarre realities — humans bearing children with insects, tentacles, even goblins...]

It continued on enthusiastically, but Zong Que didn't interrupt. He only realized that his previous notions about higher-level worlds had been far too narrow.

The ban on unauthorized research into merfolk was established to protect them from harm. Nonetheless, under the governance of the three great families, certain sanctioned studies into merfolk lifestyles — their food, clothing, housing, and daily activities — continued. Even when anatomical research was necessary, it relied solely on the voluntary donation of deceased merfolk.

While humanity still surveyed the fringes of the Moon-Jade Sea, none dared venture into its mist-shrouded depths, not even the hidden remnants of the once-dark forces.

If things had continued along this path, humanity and the deep-sea merfolk might have coexisted peacefully, each leaving the other undisturbed.

However, when a scientific vessel passed through a calm stretch of the Moon-Jade Sea, a deep-sea merfolk named Yu Hua voluntarily boarded the ship, following the research vessel back to the land.

Though deep-sea merfolk and natural merfolk appeared similar, they were fundamentally different. True deep-sea merfolk could swim freely through the abyss, their features so exquisite they seemed almost unreal. Their tails could snap through steel plates with ease. By contrast, natural-born merfolk could only survive in freshwater, their delicate skin vulnerable to even the slightest erosion, and their tails, much like human legs, required painstaking care.

The arrival of a deep-sea merfolk on land naturally stirred fierce competition among the Alliance's elite, with the younger generation of the Three Great Families emerging as the strongest contenders.

Ordinarily, this would not have posed any great issue. Yet the legends of the Moon-Jade Sea's merfolk ceased to be mere legend. As the leader of the Silver Moon Clan, Yue personally came ashore to retrieve a lost merfolk. However, the one who was lost was Zao, while Yu Hua was a human who had transmigrated into Zao's body — thus, there was no way for him to return.

Even under heavy suppression, the dark forces could not be wholly extinguished. The barely quelled unrest surged once more, and tragedy was thus set into motion.

[A transmigrator led by a system?] Zong Que tested the strength within his body and slowly sat up from the bed. He discovered that the injuries he had previously deemed fatal had already healed by more than half. A fleeting memory crossed his mind.

A healing pod.

With the advance of technology, healing pods could now replace most surgical procedures. For injuries as severe as his, at least three sessions of treatment were required.

This was merely the effect after the first session.

Zong Que glanced at his slightly swollen hands and knew that the skills he once mastered would not differ greatly in this world compared to his original one.

[No, this transmigrator was pulled over by the world itself,] 1314 explained. [The world's Law likes him very much.]

[So, it's possible to transmigrate freely without a system's guidance?] Zong Que asked.

[Not exactly,] 1314 replied cheerfully. [Some fall through the cracks between worlds — those usually get sent back. If they do bad things, they're classified as bugs.]

[Others are hosts who forcibly break free from their systems, betraying their source world to plunder the fortune of another world. Those get hunted down and erased by the Execution Division.]

This was the second time Zong Que had heard of the Execution Division. [What if someone is stronger than the Execution Division?]

[Impossible,] 1314 said firmly, its tone heavy. [The Execution Division operates differently from us. They enter worlds directly through their own avatars. Even if the Division members aren't strong enough, their leader is...not someone to be trifled with. Mm, extremely terrifying — even if you flee to the ends of the earth, they'll drag you out and reduce you to dust. It's practically...]

The system fell silent before it could finish, but Zong Que supplied the missing word for it: monstrous.

The Execution Division's strength was so overwhelming that even a system dared not speak of them lightly. They were not to be provoked.

The source world, huh?

At least he had gained some relatively useful information.

[Would such transmigrators be considered bugs?] Zong Que changed the subject.

[Not if they were caught by the world itself,] 1314 replied. [As long as they don't commit wrongdoing, they won't be classified as bugs.]

Zong Que stood up, using the original body's memories to locate a drinking unit. He poured himself a glass of water.

Ordinary worlds, higher worlds, source worlds... Worlds too had their paths of evolution, and the criteria for their judgment were intimately tied to the life within them.

The goal of humanity was evolution — and so was the world's. The lack of reproductive isolation between humans and merfolk suggested that the world intended for their species to evolve together. But the long, bloody war pointed to the failure of that fusion.

Now, with strict laws protecting merfolk, humans went to great lengths to shield them. Yet the two races remained distant. Deep-sea merfolk, scarred by that ancient war, bore a deep hatred toward humans. In seeking a bridge between them, the world had chosen Yu Hua — an unwitting, beloved starting point.

If not him, it might have been someone else.

The surface of the water in Zong Que's cup rippled gently. Staring at his own reflection, he turned and stepped into the bathroom. The sight of his swollen, ghastly face — something that could easily send a child into tears — greeted him in the mirror.

[Host, this is only temporary!] 1314 quickly assured him. [Once the injuries heal, it'll be fine! I swear!]

Zong Que was not particularly concerned about his current appearance. What occupied his mind was why that merfolk had thrown him ashore and then vanished.
