Father and Son Dispute

Lu Li moved into Qin Yu's personal quarters at the base. As a general of Qin Yu's rank, he had a private villa with ample rooms, though he lived there alone.

"Madam, it's been a while." Zhou Junyan greeted him with a warm smile. Though he held the rank of colonel, which far surpassed Noyce's, he had turned down a deputy commander position in the Second Legion to remain as Qin Yu's aide in the First.

If not for Qin Yu's unparalleled rise, Zhou would have been the youngest colonel in the Empire. Many had called him a fool for turning down such a promising position to work under Qin Yu.

Later, those same people were proven wrong. Zhou Junyan wasn't just a colonel but the third-in-command in the First Legion, wielding considerable authority—second only to two people. Qin Yu trusted him deeply, entrusting him with many crucial missions.

"Colonel Zhou." Lu Li nodded politely. Knowing that Zhou Junyan was aware of his secret identity, he felt more at ease in his presence.

"The Madam will be staying here for some time. Please make the necessary arrangements," Qin Yu instructed Zhou.

"Understood."

Just then, a soldier dispatched by Nick appeared at the villa's entrance. "General, the Marshal has requested to see you immediately."

The three of them knew well why Marshal Qin had summoned him.

"Go on; Colonel Zhou will handle things here," Lu Li said with a gentle nudge.

"Wait for me." Qin Yu left these words before following the soldier out.

Zhou turned to Lu Li with a friendly smile. "Madam, come with me. The General's bedroom is upstairs."

When he entered Marshal Qin's office, Qin Yu was greeted with the sight of his father sitting on a chair, though it wasn't the same one as before—last time's chair had broken in their argument. Indeed, the Marshal's office saw many chairs replaced each month.

"Do you understand what the military base is?" Marshal Qin glared at Qin Yu's impassive face, his own presence commanding and severe.

"Of course," Qin Yu replied, hands clasped behind his back, standing firm and exuding an aura that even seemed to suppress his father—though he held back, out of respect.

"Then why, if you understand, did you bring someone here?" Marshal Qin bristled at his son's calm, unbothered demeanor.

"Perhaps that's something you should explain to me." Qin Yu replied pointedly, his gaze unrelenting.

Caught off guard, Marshal Qin's breath hitched. He couldn't convince himself that his eldest son was unaware of the incident anymore, and his imposing demeanor weakened. "So… you found out?"

"Found out what? That you, along with my subordinate, concealed from me the fact that my mother poured hot water on Lu Li, scalding his arm?" Qin Yu's expression was cold, almost mocking.

There was no hiding now. The Marshal felt his resolve falter, and his voice softened further. "I did it for the sake of the family. Your mother didn't mean to—"

Qin Yu scoffed. "No, she meant every bit of it."

The Marshal was at a loss for words.

"She's still your mother," he said at last, his authority completely eroded.

"If she weren't my mother, she would've repaid this a hundredfold by now." Qin Yu's dark gaze made it clear he wasn't joking.

"You ungrateful wretch! Is that any way to speak of your own mother?" Marshal Qin, incensed by his son's unflinching tone, slammed his fist down once again.

Qin Yu merely sneered and fell silent.

"Enough. What's done is done. I'll compensate him, but he cannot stay at the base." Marshal Qin waved his hand dismissively, resolute on this point.

"That's impossible. I don't trust you or Mother." Qin Yu's response was instant and unyielding.

The Marshal was taken aback. "You could let him live somewhere else. Why insist on the base? It's a military site, there's no place for an outsider—let alone a Federation citizen. If classified information were to leak…"

At the mention of "Federation citizen," an icy glint flashed in Qin Yu's eyes.

Marshal Qin, observing him closely, didn't miss it and gave a cold snort. "Did you think you could keep something as big as an attack on the Federation a secret from me?"

The sharpness in Qin Yu's eyes faded. He knew it was only a matter of time before his father learned of it. However, while the Marshal knew Lu Li was from the Federation, he didn't know that Lu Li was also an undercover agent. Reassured by this fact, Qin Yu remained calm.

"Before, he was a Federation citizen. Now, he's my husband."

"That doesn't change the fact that he's from the Federation. As a general, you should understand the gravity of this situation. I don't want it used against you one day. I'm looking out for you." Marshal Qin was unyielding on this point.

"That's still impossible." Qin Yu's answer was final.

"You…" Marshal Qin searched for something on his desk to throw but found it all already scattered to the floor, so he settled for waving an angry hand instead.

This deadlock was getting them nowhere. Knowing how obstinate his son could be, Marshal Qin, having already compromised several times, finally sighed. "Fine. He can move back to the Qin household. I promise nothing like this will happen again."

"That's not happening."

"So what do you want, then?" The Marshal was growing exasperated.

Qin Yu looked at him, saying simply, "You should already know," and walked away without another word.

Once Qin Yu left, Nick entered and, seeing the mess and the Marshal's livid expression, knew at once that they hadn't reached an agreement. With years of experience, he had become unaffected by scenes like this and immediately called soldiers in to tidy up.

"Nick, tell me, why did I have to end up with a son whose sole purpose in life is to drive me mad?" The Marshal finally slumped back into his chair, exhausted.

"Probably something owed from a past life," Nick replied nonchalantly.

The Marshal was speechless yet again. He understood what his son wanted: for his wife to be accepted into the family. But until Madam Qin herself accepted Lu Li, Qin Yu would never compromise. Knowing his wife's temperament, the Marshal also knew how difficult that was likely to be.

When Qin Yu returned to the military villa, Lu Li was busy unpacking his clothes. Zhou Junyan had already left, and Noyce had come and gone as well. The two retired together. When the workload kept them away from home, they would also stay in the villa, though they were usually busy during the day.

Qin Yu was almost always occupied, and most of the time, they were even busier than he was.

Zhou Junyan, well attuned to Qin Yu's intentions, had set Lu Li up in Qin Yu's own bedroom. The space was as simple and neat as his room in the Qin household.

"You're back. How did it go with your father? Did he refuse to let me stay at the base?" Lu Li put down a neatly folded shirt. He wasn't naïve—he had known why the Marshal wanted to see Qin Yu.

"It's resolved." Qin Yu didn't mention the details. In his mind, the Marshal's opinion mattered little.

Half-believing him, Lu Li smiled knowingly. He knew Qin Yu wasn't one to converse civilly with Marshal Qin, so he could easily imagine the scene.

Qin Yu's face, cold and impassive. Marshal Qin, likely in a fit of rage.

"Are you busy today?" Lu Li asked, brushing aside the thought.

"There's a meeting this afternoon. Things are getting tense at the border—the Solo Empire's forces have been restless and need to be put back in line."

He said it so casually, as if the Solo Empire were no more than a small creature, a mere nuisance that could easily be disciplined into submission.

Lu Li knew of the Solo Empire—a powerful force with technology and military might that could rival the Glory Empire's. When he'd attended the Federation's First Military Academy, his instructors had often recounted the centuries-old enmity between the two empires, a feud so ancient no one even remembered its origin, only that each empire's royal family loathed the other.

In this advanced interstellar age, the impact of war was greater than ever, so most star systems avoided it unless absolutely necessary. But the Glory Empire and the Solo Empire were different, clashing year after year.

The initial battles saw victories and losses on both sides—until Qin Yu arrived.

Powerful empires had a select group of people who stood above the rest. These were the mutants—individuals with genes many times stronger than ordinary humans. Capable of piloting mechas and, with sufficient training, even defeating enemies bare-handed, they stood as symbols of might. Qin Yu was one such mutant, but he was a mutant like no other.

At age ten, Qin Yu already possessed 3S-level mental and physical abilities, more than capable of taking on dozens of mutants with A-level or even S-level physical prowess. Before even reaching adulthood, he had followed Marshal Qin on countless campaigns, achieving remarkable feats for the empire and eventually becoming its youngest general in history.

Since he became a soldier, the Solo Empire had not won a single battle in which Qin Yu was present, leading their royal family to loathe him with a vengeance, attempting one assassination after another.

Lu Li had learned these things only later, as he worked to get closer to Qin Yu. Back then, he hadn't believed someone could be that powerful.

But after witnessing Qin Yu tear through thousands of insectoid beasts alone, and watching enemies flee at the mere rumor of his arrival, Lu Li understood. Such a person did exist. No wonder the citizens of the Glory Empire revered him as their Guardian War God—he truly lived up to the title.

"So you'll be heading to the border soon?" Lu Li asked, his thoughts snapping back to the present. He'd thought Qin Yu would be free for the next few days and couldn't help feeling a tinge of disappointment.

"I'll return as soon as I can." Qin Yu gently brushed a lock of hair near Lu Li's ear. His usual cold demeanor softened, as if spring had melted away the ice, his gaze turning warm.

Anyone else witnessing this would have been astounded.

This side of the general was one he showed only to his wife.

Lu Li hadn't expected that Qin Yu would be even busier now that they were back on the capital star, but he understood—it was inevitable. As a general, Qin Yu carried more responsibility than most. Coming to terms with it, Lu Li smiled inwardly. Their time together had always been hard-won, and from the moment he grasped the weight of Qin Yu's role, he knew what that would entail.
