Moving Out of the Qin Household
Lu Li, meanwhile, had no idea that Qin Yu was already aware of the previous day's events. He assumed that, even if he suspected something, he wouldn't be able to uncover the truth. The Marshal had specifically told him to stay quiet, and he trusted that An Ming would do the same.
Picking up a book he had yet to finish from the bedside table, Lu Li had only read a few pages when a loud argument erupted outside, reaching him muffled yet intense even through the soundproof door. Setting the book down, he hurried out, following the voices to the hall. There, he saw Qin Yu and Madam Qin facing off—Qin Yu's expression taut, like a volcano about to erupt, while Madam Qin was consumed with rage. Hearing footsteps, she turned, her fury flaring anew as her eyes landed on Lu Li.
"Yes, I burned his arm! What's the meaning of this confrontation now? Are you planning to pour boiling water on me for revenge?" she shouted, her gaze filled with bitter accusation directed at Qin Yu.
Qin Yu didn't answer, but the bulging vein on his forehead showed that his patience was nearly at its limit. His entire presence exuded a sense of looming thunderstorm, a raw, overwhelming force that made him appear all the more intimidating.
If the Marshal were here, he might have intervened to prevent Madam Qin from further provoking her son, but unfortunately, he wasn't—and Madam Qin only continued to berate him.
"I'm your mother, not some stranger! Does that mean nothing to you? Wake up! He's nothing but a deceitful vixen, hiding a venomous heart behind his face. He swore to your father not to tell you about the burn, yet as soon as you're back, he's told you everything. He's deliberately driving a wedge between us!"
Qin Yu suddenly turned to Lu Li. "Go upstairs and pack a few things; we're leaving."
"Leaving? Where to?" Lu Li asked, confused.
"To the base," Qin Yu replied succinctly.
"What?"
"I won't allow it!" Madam Qin's enraged voice drowned out Lu Li's surprise as she stormed forward.
Qin Yu cast her a cold glance, then without bothering to pack, pulled Lu Li out the door. Madam Qin followed, stomping after them. But by the time she reached the entrance, the two were already boarding the aircraft. In a flash, they vanished from sight, leaving her fuming helplessly as she now watched the empty sky.
Looking back at the Qin mansion that soon disappeared from view, Lu Li turned to Qin Yu, still stunned. "Are you really taking me to the base?"
"I'll send someone to fetch your things from the house. Don't worry; you'll stay at the base from now on. With me here, no one will harm you again." Qin Yu took Lu Li's previously injured arm, rolling up the sleeve to reveal the scar that still stood out. Fury surged anew in his gaze, building layer upon layer.
"It doesn't hurt anymore. You know my constitution. It may look severe, but it's almost healed. You really didn't need to let things get this far with your mother for my sake." Lu Li pulled down his sleeve. He was a man, and to him, a scar was hardly worth fussing over—it was a soldier's badge of honor.
"There's no need to defend her. The person I'll spend my life with is you, not her." Qin Yu's voice had regained its calm, yet he didn't release Lu Li's hand. Instead, he rested it on his own leg.
Of course, Qin Yu was aware of his constitution. He had proven it countless times on their intimate nights, knowing that the marks on Lu Li's skin couldn't be easily erased. Despite Lu Li's reassurances, he refused to budge—in his mind, he was the only one allowed to leave any trace on Lu Li's body.
Moved by his words, Lu Li remained silent; if Qin Yu didn't mind, then neither would he.
True to form, Qin Yu acted swiftly. Upon reaching the base, he summoned his aide, Noyce, and instructed him to personally collect Lu Li's belongings from the Qin residence. He also informed him of An Ming's reassignment to Ji Rui's unit. Before Noyce could respond, Lu Li interjected in surprise.
"You're sending him back?"
"I have no use for a subordinate who follows someone else's orders," Qin Yu replied icily.
Until now, Lu Li had assumed that Qin Yu had placed An Ming at his side to keep tabs on him, if not to outright monitor his movements. Now, he realized it had all been for his own protection.
Noyce understood as well. He had heard that the General's mother strongly opposed Lu Li, but he hadn't expected Qin Yu to bring Lu Li to the base like this. Clearly, something significant had happened. Learning that An Ming had been involved and that Qin Yu had personally ordered him to return, Noyce realized An Ming's future in the First Legion had come to an end.
Noting Qin Yu's mood, Noyce refrained from asking questions and immediately set out for the Qin residence. By the time he arrived, Madam Qin was still seething. Hearing footsteps, she assumed her son had returned, only to see Noyce, her face instantly darkening.
"Where is your General?"
"Madam, the General sent me to collect the General's wife's belongings," Noyce reported.
"I forbid it," Madam Qin's expression was grim.
"My apologies, Madam." Now Noyce understood why the General had sent him personally. Bowing respectfully, he quickly gathered those belongings and left before Madam Qin could react.
Qin Yu bringing Lu Li to live at the First Legion's base caused quite a stir. News traveled fast, and it wasn't long before it reached Marshal Qin's ears, leaving him wondering if he had misheard.
"What did you say? Say it again!" Marshal Qin demanded, glaring at his aide.
"General Qin brought his wife to the base and ordered Noyce to retrieve his clothing. It appears he plans for his wife to stay with him for some time." Adjutant Nick, a veteran, was accustomed to the Marshal's temperament; he reported without flinching.
"Outrageous! The military headquarters is no place for that! Even if it's his new wife, he can't simply bring him here!" Marshal Qin slammed his hand on the table, scattering the items atop it.
"I suspect there's more to this situation," the aide ventured. Knowing Qin Yu since his youth, he trusted the General wasn't one to break protocol without reason.
"What could possibly—" Marshal Qin cut himself off abruptly.
If there was a reason, he knew it well.
But he'd thought Qin Yu wouldn't find out.
"Have General Qin come see me," Marshal Qin ordered, unwilling to let the matter slide. Bringing an outsider into the military headquarters was no trivial matter, regardless of the reason.
