Everyday Life

Without the refined seasonings of modern times, the zhe'ergen salad wasn't as flavorful as Xu Ran remembered, but the fresh, unpolluted ingredients from the wild gave it a unique, delicious taste. There was no worry about consuming too much being harmful to their health.

The children loved it. At dinner, each of them devoured an extra bowl, much to the adults' concern that they might overeat.

After Liu Tong served him another bowl, Xu Ran finally muttered, "Appetizing."

The children were clearly enjoying the dish, so the adults didn't eat much of it themselves. Still, after tasting a few bites, they all agreed it was quite good.

Wu Mei, watching his little boy eat so eagerly that his face was smeared like a kitten's, laughed and said, "Our little YueYa'er is eating like a little pig! Xu Ran really found something good this time. With fresh vegetables being so scarce, we won't have to worry now. By the way, Xu Ran, what's this thing called?"

"Zhe'ergen," Xu Ran replied as he took a few more bites.

"This is a treasure! But we should keep it to ourselves. If word gets out, everyone will rush to gather it, and it'll cause trouble," Liu Tong warned.

The others nodded in agreement.

"Alright, let's leave it to the children to gather from now on. They already go out for pig feed, so it'll be easy for them to collect this too," Wu Mei suggested.

"Sounds good," everyone agreed.

Meanwhile, Xu Ran and the group of children were happily devouring their meal. The long-lost flavor filled Xu Ran with joy as he ate.

After dinner, Wu Lan and Liu Qing gathered their children and left, each carrying a full basket of pig feed.

Later that night, Xu Ran felt the sting of blisters forming on his hands. The skin had chafed from the day's work. It hurt, but the pain was still manageable, so he didn't mention it.

Though he said nothing, Liu Tong knew. Xu Ran hadn't done any labor for seven years, and now, after gathering so much pig feed and digging up the zhe'ergen, it was no surprise his hands had suffered.

Liu Tong brought over the medicine Doctor Liu had prescribed for injuries and gently applied it to Xu Ran's hands before letting him go to bed.

As Xu Ran lay down, he remembered that Liu Tong's shoulder was still injured. He quickly sat up and started applying medicine to Liu Tong's shoulder in return.

The two of them, tending to each other, only lay down to rest after they finished applying the medicine, continuing to chat as they settled into bed.

Despite the hard work, Xu Ran didn't feel particularly tired. He turned to Liu Tong, lying beside him. "Tongtong, how much longer do you need to cut bamboo?"

"Two more days. I want to cut a bit extra to expand the house. When winter comes and it gets cold, we can get some oilskin paper and wrap it around the outside. That way, it won't be so chilly."

Xu Ran had always longed for a bamboo house. The thought of having one soon made him excited, but problems quickly surfaced in his mind.

They couldn't live without firewood, rice, oil, salt, and kitchen essentials like pots and bowls. They didn't have any of those things, and everything would need to be purchased. The trouble was, they had no money—what a headache!

With a sigh, Xu Ran asked, "Tongtong, do we have any silver left? If not, we won't even have enough to buy bowls."

Seeing Xu Ran's spirits sinking, Liu Tong shook his head, feeling guilty. "Ah Ran, it's my fault. I didn't manage to save any silver, and that's why we're living like this."

Xu Ran took Liu Tong's hand. "Why say that? If we don't have money to buy things, we'll just make them ourselves. We can use wooden bowls, and the chopsticks are already made of wood. The only thing we really need is a cast-iron pot."

Xu Ran listed off each household necessity and how they could make it themselves, while Liu Tong was already thinking about how to quickly earn some silver. The family really couldn't afford to go without food, and the two kids were still young, plus Ah Ran's health wasn't great…

Though their thoughts were different, both were working toward the same goal—to improve their lives and make their home more comfortable.
