Chapter 21 - Transmigration: The Farm Life of a “Fool”

Just as Xu Ran and the children returned, they found Liu Tong and the others arriving back as well. Seeing the courtyard gate closed and no one inside, they had started to worry and were about to go look for them. But then, Xu Ran appeared with the children, carrying a fully loaded basket of pig feed, while the children held bundles of white root-like plants in their hands.

 

Liu Tong quickly rushed over to relieve Xu Ran of the heavy basket, casting a slightly reproachful look. "Where did you run off to?"

 

Xu Ran smiled without a word, letting Liu Tong take the basket.

 

Before Xu Ran could explain, Dahu chimed in excitedly, "Liu Tong Ah-mo, Uncle Xu Ran went out to gather pig feed! He's amazing—he collected so much, and there's more outside! Guoguo and Gouzi are guarding it. Daddy, you should go bring it in!"

 

Liu Tong and the others were already impressed by the amount Xu Ran had brought back, but hearing that there was even more left outside came as a real surprise. Liu Tong had doted on Xu Ran for seven years, never letting him lift a finger for any chores.

 

While Liu Tong carried the pig feed into the courtyard, Xu An and Xu Zhen had already grabbed baskets and headed out to retrieve the rest.

 

Xu An was familiar with the area Dahu often went to for pig feed, so there was no need for Dahu to guide them.

 

It was at that moment that Liu Qing and Wu Lan noticed the strange items in the children's hands.

 

"Daodao, what is that you're holding? Is it also pig feed?" Wu Lan asked, his curiosity piqued.

 

His question immediately drew the attention of everyone present.

 

Daodao, Wu Lan's little boy, was a year younger than Tangtang and Guoguo, only four years old. He shook his head and said, "I don't know what it is. Uncle Xu Ran told us to bring it back."

 

Seeing that his father wasn't about to explain, Tangtang stepped forward and answered on his behalf. "Wu Lan Ah-mo, my daddy said it's something we can eat, so we dug up a lot of it."

 

"This is food? Are you sure about that, Ah Ran?" Liu Tong asked, clearly surprised.

 

Xu Ran nodded his head, confident. "Yes, it's edible."

 

His firm response made them believe him, at least somewhat.

 

"How do we eat it?" Wu Mei asked.

 

"Cold salad," Xu Ran replied simply, no longer pretending to stutter.

 

Liu Tong gathered all the zhe'ergen the children had brought in and set it aside. "Since Ah Ran says it's edible, let's try it tonight! A small taste shouldn't hurt, and if it's really good, we'll have one more dish to enjoy in the future."

 

"Sounds good. Then we'll make it as a salad tonight. Wu Lan, Liu Qing, why don't you both stay and eat with us? Xu Ran brought back plenty of pig feed—each of you can take a basket home later, so you won't have to gather more in the dark."

 

Wu Lan agreed cheerfully, "Sure! Xu Ran is really getting better, isn't he? He's even out gathering pig feed and foraging for wild vegetables. Liu Tong, you've finally made it through the tough times!"

 

Liu Tong smiled, clearly pleased with Xu Ran's efforts today.

 

Later that evening, Xu Ran whispered the preparation method for the zhe'ergen into Liu Tong's ear as he sliced it. The sharp aroma spread through the room, drawing in the curious children.

 

Since this plant could be eaten raw, Xu Ran had taken special care to select only the right pieces beforehand, ensuring the children didn't accidentally add anything harmful to the mix.

 

Noticing the children's eagerness to try it, he had Liu Tong to prepare the zhe'ergen salad first so the kids could nibble on it while they waited.

 

Initially, the adults were concerned about the possibility of it being toxic, but after Xu Ran took the first bite and remained fine, they felt reassured and allowed the children to join in.
