For His Own Good

"If you want to regain your lost memories, come to the mansion from last time."

Parting Sorrow's message was simple, but Lu Li indeed wanted those missing three years back, so he went to the mansion again.

Qin Yu wasn't at the villa, and An Ming, unlike before, hadn't kept a close eye on him. Lu Li had been acting quiet lately, and An Ming seemed to have grown lax, barely tracking his movements. Slipping out was easy.

At the mansion, He Jianbai was already waiting for him and promptly led him to another location.

This place was hidden away, equipped with some medical apparatus that Lu Li could only guess how they acquired. Three others were present. A middle-aged man with refined, composed features wore a white lab coat. He was a doctor, clearly brought in to conduct Lu Li's examination.

Lu Li allowed them to handle the equipment without protest, observing that while the machinery seemed advanced, it wasn't nearly as sophisticated as what he'd seen on the Glory Battleship.

After about an hour, the doctor shared the results of his examination with He Jianbai.

"Then let's go with the second option, using the equipment to treat him," He Jianbai decided without hesitation.

"Isn't this method risky?" Lu Li frowned, questioning their confidence.

He Jianbai glanced at the middle-aged doctor.

"We're about seventy percent certain," the doctor replied after a pause.

"Are you sure?" Lu Li wasn't trying to doubt the doctor's skills, but he recalled that Qin Yu's military physician had deemed this option too risky to attempt at present. The Glory Empire's technology was leagues ahead of the Federation's, after all, and Lu Li trusted their assessment. Besides, he had only one head to gamble with.

"As a doctor, I don't joke about my patients," the man responded with a hint of offense at his doubts.

"Lu Li, Dr. Chen is the Federation's top doctor. If he says he's seventy percent sure, then it's seventy percent. If he can't do it, no one else can either," He Jianbai interjected, trying to persuade him.

The doctor let out a small huff. "If Mr. Lu doesn't trust me, then forget it. After all, it's not my memory that's gone."

"It's not that I don't trust Dr. Chen. Since you're so confident, let's give it a try." Lu Li rubbed his temple, suddenly feeling a dull ache. He knew questioning a doctor's skill was impolite, but he still valued his life. He hadn't expected a simple inquiry to cause such a strong reaction.

"Now that you've decided, let's proceed. We're fully prepared, and it shouldn't take long. If everything goes smoothly, we'll be finished by sunset," He Jianbai said, signaling the other two to get ready.

Soon after, Lu Li lay down on a piece of equipment. The middle-aged doctor administered an anesthetic, and soon he drifted into unconsciousness.

"Lu Li?" He Jianbai stepped forward, nudging him and calling his name. When he received no response, his feigned expression turned icy as he approached Dr. Chen and said, "Dr. Chen, I'm counting on you."

"Mr. He, why did you ask me to lie to him and tell him there was seventy percent certainty?" The doctor's earlier irritation was gone, replaced by a somber tone. He had indeed lied—there was only a forty percent chance of success.

In general, with odds so low, no doctor would proceed with treatment or surgery unless the patient's life was at risk.

And the brain, far more complex than any other part of the body, remained beyond the full understanding of any doctor in the star system. Attempting a procedure with such low certainty was even more perilous.

When Qin Yu had Lu Li examined by a military doctor, they'd estimated a sixty percent chance of success—yet Qin Yu had refrained from treatment because even that entailed nearly half the risk of failure.

"If we hadn't said so, he wouldn't have agreed to the procedure. The General approved this, and we can't delay any longer. Once his memory returns, he'll understand we did this for his own good." He Jianbai felt no guilt for deceiving Lu Li. This was his duty, and he'd known from the start he'd have to set aside any concern for life and death when doing his job.

The doctor sighed. At this point, there was no turning back.

Half an hour later, a transparent cover revealed Lu Li's twisted expression. Even in a semi-conscious state, he appeared to be in immense pain, with cold sweat pouring down his face and his clothes soaked through, as if he'd just been pulled out of water.

"How's it going?" He Jianbai asked.

"Almost there," Dr. Chen replied, watching the data on the monitor—a wavy line that seemed close to breaking through but kept falling short.

"Increase the stimulation level," He Jianbai commanded.

"But that might overload his brain," Dr. Chen hesitated.

"I believe he can withstand it."

"But—"

"No buts. Dr. Chen, your job is to help him recover his memory. If you hesitate, all his suffering today will have been for nothing. We're this far in, so keep going. The General will take responsibility if anything happens."

"Alright."

Lu Li felt as if he were close to death. His head throbbed with a pain the sedative couldn't touch. In his haze, he regained consciousness, but the agony was so intense that he almost wished he could bang his head against something solid to relieve it.

Waves of pain surged over him, twice as intense as at the start. The sudden jolt nearly sent him back into unconsciousness, though he almost wished he would pass out to escape the suffering.

The sharp, pained sounds that escaped him bounced back off the thick walls, completely soundproofed so that no one passing outside would suspect the torment happening within.

Eventually, as time seemed to stretch endlessly, the pain ceased.

By the time Lu Li woke up, it was afternoon. The sun hung low in the western sky, staining the clouds a fiery red.

"Did it work? Are your memories back?" He Jianbai rushed over the moment Lu Li opened his eyes.

Lu Li turned to him with an unreadable calm in his gaze.
