Chapter 49: The Yellow Sparrow (2)

His upturned eyes shimmered with unspoken sorrow—a moment in need of comfort.

Zong Que reached out and gently brushed the corner of Yue's eye. His pinky grazed the side of Yue's neck, where a fierce pulse thrummed beneath the skin.

"Zong Que… I was heartbroken." Yue wrapped his arms gently around his waist, planting featherlight kisses along his jaw. His voice was soft, almost pleading. "You're my salvation. Do you understand?"

The kiss fell with his words. Zong Que looked down, sensing the tightening arms around him and the cautious touch of Yue's lips against his own. The merman's eyes were half-lidded, the rims faintly flushed with sorrow—like a siren in the night sea, capable of pulling a soul effortlessly into the abyss.

"Zong Que, just think of it as comforting me… please?" Yue, seeing his approach rebuffed, pulled back slightly and pleaded.

His voice was hauntingly beautiful, gentle as moonlight. But Zong Que had never encountered such a form of "comfort."

"Yue," he said calmly, "people must take responsibility for their choices. Are you certain you're ready for the consequences?"

"Of course," Yue whispered, kissing his lips again. "Zong Que, I need you. I'm willing to take responsibility for you."

So long as he got what he wanted, agreeing to anything was a small price to pay.

He kissed him again, more deliberately this time. Zong Que parted his lips, watching the joy spread across Yue's face as the kiss deepened. But then something melted on his tongue and slipped down his throat before he could react—he tried to spit it out, but it was lodged too far to resist.

They broke apart. Zong Que frowned and pressed his fingers to his throat. "What did you just feed me?"

"Something good, of course," Yue said sweetly, watching the flush bloom across the human's cheeks. His tail swayed contentedly in the water, though he forced himself to hold back the giddy impatience surging within him.

Zong Que's throat felt parched as never before, and heat surged through his body with alarming intensity. Though he tried to suppress it, even his breath came hot now, his voice hoarse as he asked, "You gave me an aphrodisiac?"

His head buzzed, something shooting up into his brain, leaving it clouded and unsteady. But whatever that substance was—though it melted instantly in the mouth—it shouldn't have had any medicinal effect.

"It was only a catalyst," Yue replied gently, steadying him by the waist. He pulled the man from the rocks into the sea, letting them both rise and fall with the waves. "Zong Que, the fish you ate earlier is the key. But don't worry—merfolk of the Silver Moon Clan are tender with their partners. We're nothing like the brutish Dark Abyss merfolk."

His voice was airy and distant, as if it came from both near and far.

Zong Que's plunge into the sea gave him a fleeting moment of coolness. But even with his back against the cold stone, the fire within him didn't die. It only paused—then rebounded stronger, like a tide crashing back into his mind. His eyes swelled with heat and blurred his vision, the shape of the merman before him barely discernible, only a silver gleam drifting closer. Soft lips met his again, feather-light and warm.

"Zong Que, you should never have let your guard down around merfolk. But humans are always so kind—they believe any lie that's gently told," Yue's laugh was soft and full of both tenderness and mischief, tinged with something impatient. "I didn't want to do this to you, truly. But you're so hard to court, and I just wanted to be close to you…"

"Yue, don't do something we'll both regret," Zong Que said, bracing his hand against the merman's waist and drawing a deep breath.

"If I don't do this, I will regret it. I'll regret it so much I'll throw myself into a great white shark's mouth," Yue murmured, his tail rippling with the waves. His lips brushed Zong Que's neck, a cool breath grazing his throat. "Human body heat is so strange… such a shame you'll be losing it forever."

Just one night. That was all he needed to remake this human body, to take him back to the depths—to watch those calm eyes stirred each day only for him.

"What a shame…" Zong Que echoed in a whisper. Then he leaned in, caught Yue's lips, and kissed him.

A flash of joy lit Yue's eyes as he returned the kiss, deep and fervent, tangled in the waves of passion. For a moment, the world vanished—no sky, no sea, no shore.

But beneath the surface, a hand moved. Fingers curled underwater, gathering every ounce of strength, and struck precisely three inches below the merman's navel.

A muffled grunt. Yue's tail stiffened abruptly.

The ocean still churned around them, but the once-triumphant merman froze entirely, staring in shock at the human whose expression had returned to eerie calm. He parted his lips but couldn't speak a word.

Zong Que looked at him, arms wrapping around the stunned merman's waist, then stepped up onto the rocks and carried him ashore.

He laid Yue down on the sand, far from the reach of the waves, meeting those defiant, guarded eyes with an unwavering gaze of his own.

"Merfolk are indeed powerful in the sea," Zong Que said calmly, ignoring the icy fury in Yue's eyes. He tapped the spot just below his navel—still bearing the bruise from his strike, though it was already fading. "But your kind has a fatal weakness. Most assume it's the heart, like with humans. But in truth, it's here. One hit, and you lose all ability to fight. In the sea, you'd recover in minutes. But on land? It'll take at least an hour."

"Wh… what are you going to do…" Yue's tail twitched, futile. Even his voice trembled with exhaustion.

"You know I'm a scientist," Zong Que said, brushing his thumb along Yue's jaw, his tone turning glacial beneath the breeze. "But what you didn't know is—I specialize in deep-sea merfolk."

Yue's expression crumbled in an instant. Defiance gave way to fury.

"You… better… kill me," he hissed, hatred burning in his eyes.

Because if Zong Que didn't, the moment he regained his strength, he would kill him.

"Do you think I'm afraid of that?" Zong Que's hand traced lightly over the sleek length of Yue's tail. "It's beautiful. If I were to pry each scale off one by one… I imagine it'd hurt—but it'd still be stunning. And if I used you as bait, I'm sure your entire Silver Moon Clan would come rushing in to save you. Then humanity would never run short of merfolk again."

"You… know…" Yue's fingers dug into the sand, muscles taut with strain.

"I do. You thought I was just some weak human. That's why you let your guard down." Zong Que pressed a hand to Yue's chest, right over his heart, his gaze devoid of emotion. "Only the clan leader would bother to keep count of the tribe. If the Silver Moon Clan were wiped out… would this place even grieve?"

Despair flickered in Yue's eyes, followed by unrelenting resolve. "I'll never…"

He would never become a bargaining chip. The clan could always find a new leader—but never should they fall into human hands.

The wind howled across the shore, and the sea churned like a great cry of warning.

"…Just kidding."

Those two simple words slammed into Yue like a crashing wave. He froze. Zong Que leaned in, caught his chin gently, and looked into the angry storm still raging in his eyes.

"My research is on incubation chambers," Zong Que said, voice calm and deliberate. "I'm working on ways to separate human reproductive dependency from merfolk biology."

"I… don't believe you," Yue whispered, eyes filled with disbelief.

He couldn't tell what was a lie, what was real anymore.

"Good. You shouldn't believe me," Zong Que replied evenly. "I don't believe in merfolk either. Just like with that fish—you knew exactly what would happen when I ate it. So did I."

"That's why you asked if I'd regret it…" Yue murmured, slowly piecing it together.

That was why he had asked.

"You're clever. But you underestimated my medical skills." Zong Que bent his head and kissed him again.

Though the drug's effects had been neutralized by his antidote, the catalyst still left heat simmering beneath his skin.

Yue's eyes widened, helpless to do anything but accept the human's deep kiss. The warmth of Zong Que's body felt like it could scorch him, making his heart contract with something frighteningly close to fear.

When they finally parted, Zong Que wiped the corner of his mouth and looked at the breathless merman before him. Then he lifted him once more into his arms and turned toward the sea.

Under the starlight, the merman was breathtaking. His long hair spilled over Zong Que's arms, his silver tail shimmered like constellations. Every lash, every mark on his skin, looked as though a god had painted it with meticulous pride.

Zong Que waded into the waves, the sea rising to greet them, and looked down at the one cradled against his chest.

"Yue. Don't trust humans. Go back to where you belong."

"You're letting me go? Aren't you afraid I'll come for you?" Yue's fingers twitched, voice regaining strength as the sea's damp embrace restored his power.

"You tricked me once. I tricked you once. We're even," Zong Que said, meeting his gaze. "Besides, I'll be gone from this place soon enough."

Yue's pupils constricted for a brief moment. His fingers curled reflexively. "Leaving? Where will you go?"

"Planet A. I'll be working there. While I'm at it, I'll check on that merman—see if he really is a deep-sea variant." Zong Que added, "If he wants to return, I'll help him. If not, he can stay on Planet A, protected by the Three Great Families. No harm will come to him."

That merman belonged to the ocean, and he to the land—two polar realms, intersecting only once. After this, they would become parallel lines, never meeting again.

Fascination was one thing, but Zong Que had always believed that ocean treasures should stay with the sea—born of it, raised in it, and eventually sleeping beneath its waves, undisturbed by the world.

"Why help me? You don't feel the human thing they call love," Yue said softly.

"Call it repayment for saving my life." Zong Que bent down and placed him gently in the water.

The moment Yue's body touched the sea, the rigidity dissolved, his strength returning. His graceful tail floated freely again, but he didn't rush to leave.

"Saving your life?"

"The first time you rescued me, I was so waterlogged you didn't recognize me," Zong Que said, releasing him and stepping back toward the shore. He looked at the merman whose gaze had turned complex. "You don't hate humans as much as you say. But it's better to stay away."

The glimmer in Yue's eyes trembled faintly with the waves. He had regained his strength. If he wanted, he could summon the ocean to devour the man and the lab behind him. But he didn't.

That ship long ago—tossed by the sea and capsized by waves—had left only one surviving human, clinging to driftwood, desperate to live. Yue had only saved him because he despised the Dark Abyss clan's brutality. He had tossed him ashore and forgotten him, never expecting they would meet so many times without recognizing him.

"Yue, farewell," Zong Que said, his tone steady. He turned and walked away from the sea, heading back to the research facility.

Yue opened his mouth to speak, but no words came. Even as Zong Que disappeared from sight, he didn't look back once.

This wasn't "farewell." It was a final goodbye. Yet Yue's chest felt tight, suffocatingly so, as if something within him was breaking.

He clutched at his chest. His heart was pounding—painfully so. It wasn't excitement. It was anguish. He felt it clearly but had no idea how to stop it.

Silver light spilled into the sea, as if he were swimming toward the silver moon—toward the very edge of the ocean.

[Host, is the mission complete now?] 1314 asked.

Given his actions, Yue should no longer have a reason to go ashore seeking Yu Hua.

[We should still prepare for unforeseen variables.] Zong Que said as he stepped into the shower, turning on the cold water after undressing.

Even with the antidote, the catalyst's effect had been far stronger than he anticipated.

This world wasn't purely governed by technology—there were countless unknown forces at play. If he hadn't extracted the merfolk's weakness from the system, the outcome of today's confrontation could have gone either way.

[What kind of variable?] asked 1314.

[Human exploration of the Moon-Jade Sea.] Zong Que replied.
