Chapter 36: A Date (1)

In the room, Lin Heng bustled around, packing things away. Zong Que ran his fingers over the watch dial. It had been a reward for his final exam results that summer—but the boy's thoughts must have been with him even earlier.

Back then, his mind had been consumed with grades and competitions. If Lin Heng had confessed his feelings at that time, they would have gone their separate ways before anything ever began.

But the boy had waited—hidden his feelings and endured in silence, right up until the day the competitions ended.

"I'm done packing. Let's go," Lin Heng called from the doorway.

"Mm." Zong Que rose to his feet.

"I've got the room key," Lin Heng added as he changed his shoes.

"Mm." Zong Que had already noticed him packing earlier.

Lin Heng slipped his feet into his shoes and gave them a couple of light taps against the floor. Watching Zong Que bend down beside him to change shoes, he laughed, "I have a feeling you'd say yes to anything I ask."

"No," Zong Que said, standing upright.

Lin Heng stared quietly at his calm face, then suddenly smiled and wrapped his arms around his waist, looking up.

"Then kiss me."

"Mm."

The kiss was gentle.

And in that moment, Lin Heng felt he had nothing more to ask for.

...

Most people wouldn't notice something like a new profile picture. Even if the art styles matched, as long as the avatars weren't side-by-side, no one would suspect a thing.

Except one person.

Wang Yang: #Screenshot #Screenshot

Wang Yang: Que-ge, what's going on with you and Lin Heng? Why do your profile pics look like couple avatars?

Wang Yang: Que-ge! Answer me! What are you two even doing so late at night during vacation?

Message after message came flooding in. The phone buzzed relentlessly until Zong Que finally unwrapped himself from the boy nestled in his arms, got up, and sent a reply: Just woke up.

The clock read 6 a.m.

Wang Yang stared at those two simple words and felt a chill run down his back.

Wang Yang: Que-ge… don't tell me you didn't mute your phone?

Zong Que rubbed his brow. That crab place they'd gone to the night before had indeed been great. Lin Heng had eaten with enthusiasm, and their meal had gone on a bit longer than planned—so they'd gone to bed later than usual. Getting woken up by the buzzing of a phone at 6 a.m. was, understandably, unpleasant.

"Who is it? Disturbing people's dreams at the crack of dawn…" The person on the bed grumbled, shifting around restlessly. He cracked one eye open and instinctively sat up, leaning sleepily into Zong Que's chest with a yawn. "I haven't slept enough."

"Go back to sleep in a bit," Zong Que said.

On the other end of the phone, Wang Yang was already banging his head on the table.

Wang Yang: Sorry! I thought you were like Lin Heng and had your phone on silent!

Six in the morning was still the middle of the night for someone like him.

Who on earth goes on vacation and doesn't stay up late? People like Zong Que clearly lived on another plane of existence.

Lin Heng cracked an eye open and glanced at the phone screen. "Wang Yang? What's he want?"

"Something about the avatars." Zong Que had long grown used to Lin Heng's sleepy demeanor. He scrolled through the earlier messages and typed back: Just what you're thinking.

Lin Heng squinted at the message, then let out a lazy laugh. "With a reply like that, you've pretty much ruined his whole day."

"Mm." Zong Que locked the phone and set it aside. He pulled the sleepy figure in his arms down with him. "Sleep."

His expression didn't change, but the way he could do something so devilish with such composure made it feel like he was always hiding mischief behind that calm exterior.

Lin Heng scooted closer. "Kiss me before we sleep."

Zong Que opened his eyes and looked at the boy in front of him. He cupped the back of Lin Heng's head and pulled him in. "Lin Heng, moderation in all things. Indulgence has its costs."

Lin Heng's cheeks burned. In that moment, he felt a ravenous hunger stir in his chest. It wasn't entirely surprising, given how intimately they'd spent the last few days. He was young, and youth always ran hot—it was just a sign of good health.

"…Zong Que, don't tell me you can't?" Lin Heng looked up and whispered, only to meet a pair of calm, fathomless eyes.

They were as unreadable as always—but under the dark of the room, those eyes seemed even deeper, and Lin Heng had a fleeting urge to flee. "I take it back."

Even the cutest kitten was still a carnivore.

"Sleep," Zong Que said again, eyes closing.

Lin Heng let out a quiet sigh of relief and slung a leg over his waist. "This is the most comfortable way to sleep."

"Mm."

Wang Yang's messages continued their relentless assault over the next few days. But Zong Que had set his notifications to silent and ignored every single one.

Eventually, even Wang Yang's attitude mellowed.

Wang Yang: Heh. Whatever.

Who cared how long they'd used "friendship" as a cover for dating right in front of him? The world was meaningless. His two bros had gone and fallen for each other.

Meanwhile, Zong Que and Lin Heng had explored one scenic spot after another, leaving behind plenty of pictures in their wake. Days of hiking, sightseeing, and fun in the sun had finally caught up with even the ever-energetic Lin Heng, and by the end of it all, he was visibly worn out.

They sat beneath a parasol, fishing rods propped up beside them as they stared at the still surface of the water. A gentle breeze rustled by, and with a tray of freshly cut fruit beside them, the moment was blissfully tranquil.

"We're heading back tomorrow," Lin Heng said, stretching out his legs to relieve his aching feet.

He hadn't even left yet, and he already missed the place.

Zong Que gave his lap a soft pat. "Mm. I asked just now—there are crabs upstream in the mountain spring here."

Lin Heng turned to look at him, silent for a moment. "You're not going to miss it?"

"We can come back," Zong Que said.

Mountains and rivers took millennia to change. And in this vast world, there were far too many beautiful places still left to see.

Lin Heng had the sense they weren't talking about the same thing—but then Zong Que asked, "Want to go catch some crabs?"

His thoughts shifted, and he got to his feet with a grin. "Let's go!"

Fishing was fine, but wading upstream to catch crabs sounded a lot more fun.

The spring water gurgled as it ran over smooth stones. Lin Heng, clutching a bucket, eagerly made his way along the stream. The area was remote and peaceful, the water clean, the air crisp.

"Where do crabs usually hide?" Lin Heng crouched by the water, scanning carefully.

"Under the rocks," Zong Que said, eyeing a place where tiny bubbles emerged beside a stone. He flipped it over, and sure enough, a crab the size of a coin darted out.

"A crab, a crab, a crab! Grab it!" Lin Heng yelped, flailing clumsily. But before the little creature could get far, Zong Que pressed a finger gently on its shell and picked it up.

Lin Heng leaned in, watching its legs flail wildly. He reached out to touch it, only for the crab to swing its claw in warning. "Aren't you afraid of getting pinched?"

"If you hold it here, it can't reach," Zong Que demonstrated, tossing the crab into the bucket. "There should be more around."

"I'll go find some!" Lin Heng said, lifting the bucket and wading barefoot into the stream, sandals forgotten.

He began flipping over stones all over the streambed.

The mountain forest was quiet, but Lin Heng's excited voice rang out clearly.

"I caught one! I think it's smaller than yours though."

"Mm," Zong Que responded.

"There's more! Three of them!"

"Nice try, you're not getting away that easily!"

His sandals made him slip too much, so he just took them off, stepping barefoot on the smooth, cool pebbles beneath the water.

Sunlight fell on his crisp white shirt, softening his usual steady air with a hint of youthful mischief. His joy was pure, unfiltered, and reflected in his every move.

"Zong Que! I caught a huge one—look!" he called from the stream, raising his hand high. Sure enough, a crab the size of his palm flailed in the air, unable to escape.

"Coming," Zong Que said, getting to his feet and walking over.

...

The sun dipped toward the horizon. The bucket holding several large crabs swayed in the golden light as Lin Heng carried it with one hand, the other slung around Zong Que's shoulders.

"Sorry," he murmured.

He'd had fun, sure—but the spring water had probably been too cold. After staying in it for too long, both his legs cramped. He barely managed to make it down the hill, and now his legs were trembling.

"It's fine," Zong Que said, one arm holding him by the thighs, the other carrying the sandals that could no longer stay on Lin Heng's feet.

Lin Heng held on tighter and rested his chin on Zong Que's shoulder with a smile. "Thanks."

"Mm."

Their shadows, cast by the setting sun, overlapped so closely it looked like just one person. Lin Heng listened to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat, and suddenly realized—maybe he wasn't reluctant to leave the scenery at all.

What he was truly reluctant to part with… was the person who shared that scenery with him.

But no matter where they went, they'd always be together.

Their plane took off the next morning at dawn, leaving behind the warm and romantic city.

The trip had been meant for relaxation, but even Zong Que needed a few days of rest after returning before he could fully recover.

The summer heat was merciless. On days like these, no one wanted to step outside. Even the elderly, usually afraid of catching cold, couldn't help keeping the fans on all day.

Zong Que sat indoors reading, occasionally replying to messages when his phone vibrated.

Lin Heng: I had steamed buns for lunch. Not as good as the ones Grandma makes.

Zong Que replied with one hand: You can come over.

Lin Heng's reply came quickly: It's too hot. I can't even leave the house. Just stepping outside to get a delivery for my mom had me soaked in sweat. #sigh

Zong Que responded: Wait until the sun sets.

Lin Heng chuckled twice as he stared at the screen: Thanks for caring.

As the message was sent, Zong Que's side showed he was typing: You're welcome.

Imagining Zong Que's expression as he typed, Lin Heng lightly tapped the screen: I need to buy a computer for school. Originally, I thought about assembling a high-performance one, but I heard freshmen have to live on campus first semester. Want to go to the computer mall together to look around?

Zong Que pondered for a moment: Don't you already have one?

Lin Heng replied: That one's my mom's. She mostly uses it to watch some shows. It's more convenient for her if I get my own.

Zong Que lightly tapped the screen and then directly called him: "Hey, when do you want to go? Any idea what model you're thinking about?"

Caught off guard by the sudden call, Lin Heng scrambled off the sofa and hurried into his bedroom. "Why the sudden call? I'm still looking into it... If I get a laptop, the budget needs to be a bit higher."

As the bedroom door closed behind him, Mother Lin, sitting outside, hit the space bar to resume her drama. She shook her head and sighed softly, "Young people."

Can't even make a call without feeling embarrassed in front of their parents.

Whether two people are suited for each other becomes clear after traveling together. Judging by how sweet they still were after returning, it seemed they were indeed a good match.

"Once you've decided, let me know," Zong Que said.

"Can't you give me a little advice before I decide?" Lin Heng looked out at the sun-scorched earth and asked.

"Mm," Zong Que replied. "Depends on what you need it for."

"You," Lin Heng teased, absentmindedly tugging at the curtain and smiling. "Zong Que, I kind of miss you."

"What time? Where do you want to meet?" Zong Que glanced at the time and asked.

Lin Heng's hand froze: "I haven't even picked a computer yet."

"We could still have a date," Zong Que suggested. "What do you want to eat?"

"Fried chicken," Lin Heng laughed. "And maybe a movie afterward?"

"You don't mind?" Zong Que asked.

"Not at all. Sure, it's a bit cliché, but I like it," Lin Heng said, checking the time. "It's still a bit too hot now. Let's meet at five."

"Alright." After agreeing, Zong Que set the phone aside and opened his book again. But noticing the call hadn't ended, he asked, "Anything else?"
